I'm really excited about the fourth installment of I Used to Love H.E.R., a series in which artists/bloggers/writers discuss their most essential hip-hop albums ( read intro ). That's because singer Sarah Daly of the London-based Scanners discusses in a quick Q&A an album that is one of my top three favorite hip-hop records. That only made me appreciate the group's new LP Violence Is Golden ( Dim Mak ) all the more. Visit Scanners Web site or MySpace . Below is the mp3 for the single Lowlife. [...]
The Knack have decided to sue everyone who's associated with the song "It's Tricky" for copying their one hit "My Sharona". This includes the artists (Run DMC) producers (Rick Rubin), publishers, and record companies. Online music retailers such as iTunes, Yahoo, Amazon, and Napster are even getting in on the being-sued action . Wait, wasn't "It's Tricky" released 20 years ago? Yes, it was, and it had an awesome video featuring Penn and Teller. But conveniently no one in The Knack knew that the song, which is [...]

Some sad news from the US: Joseph Simmons - Run from Run DMC - and his wife have announced their baby dided shortly after birth. The pregnancy had been followed by MTV as part of one of their many reality series; last week, staff at Ridgewood's New Valley hospital discovered the foetus had developed with organs outside the body. Although successfully delivered, the child lost its fight for life shortly after birth. music reverend run run dmc

I pride myself on posting a wide variety of music, but I think this is the weirdest selection of shit I ever put up. Also, that image is from Musicstack , a pretty good site if you are looking for some rare vinyl. Wolfmother - The Earth's Rotation Around the Sun I saw these guys live a few days ago and sweet holy Jeebus do they bring the rock. A lot of people describe them as an updated Led Zeppelin or Black Sabbath, but with this b-side they're are obviously [...]

News of some band suing some other band over an uncleared sample isn't unusual. What isn't common is for it to take two decades for the band to get round to bringing the legal action. That's what's happened with The Knack, though, who have suddenly realised the guts of It's Tricky by Run DMC is My Sharona. Or, rather, their Sharona. If it's not ridiculous enough that they've filed this after twenty years, the list of names on the lawsuit is even more absurd. As well as suing Run DMC, The Knack [...]
On Fridays I'm going to start posting something different or special. Since my original intention for this site was to be a bit of a self promotional project as well as a podcast, it seems only fitting to dedicate a day to trying somethin gnew. As time progresses I hope to be posting up short mixes as well - but for now i'm offering up some recent remixes/re-edits I've been toying around with. Mostly, I just do this stuff for fun and it never actually sees the light of day. I've recently purchased Serato though, so I have a feeling [...]
Fascinating article in the Weekend Journal about the maturing of the rap scene: Thirty years after hip-hop first emerged as a distinct genre, it has become second only to rock in popularity by some measures and accounts for 13% of all music purchased - including four of last year's top 10 albums. But for all the success, hip-hop hasn't created many acts with musical staying power. While crowds continue to pour out for Madonna and Bruce Springsteen, even as Medicare eligibility looms, the fast pace of rap's evolution has [...]
