Unless you're living totally off the grid, it's hard to ignore the signs. Church Christmas bazaars and crafts fairs pepper the New England landscape, their wreaths and wraps and wooden ornaments a constant temptation. Television relationships get warmer by the fire; the commercials all begin to come in red velvet and white fur trim. Even the older family down the street has gotten into the act, draping the gutters with fauxcicles, topping the old stump with a glittering wire angel, trimming the lawn with white plastic snowmen and skeletal reindeer that blink furiously into [...]

11. The Scottish Enlightenment - St. Thomas I waited ages for this album to materialise, and then once I'd loved the preceding EPs so much I started to get paranoid about over-anticipating it and ruining it for myself. Once the ludicrous over-thinking was over, however, it turned out to be slow-burning gem: an album that simply fixes you in its gaze and keeps on reeling you in, sometimes so slowly that you wonder how it is so impossible to escape. The Scottish Enlightenment - Pascal [...]
Video: Vimeo - YouTube Photos: Flickr Audio: freely downloadable below... Loch Lomond came over to the UK in May to play some dates in Scotland, so we took the opportunity to record a Toad Session with them. We first met the band when we went out to Pickathon in 2008 and interviewed them there. Since then we have released a split 123 and an EP by them over here on Song, by Toad Records. [...]

Words: Simon Opie Released earlier this month, 'You The Darkness & Me' (sadly not a concept album about an obsession with Justin Hawkins ) is the second album by a 'band' called Run On Sentence . The band is actually a rotating group of musicians who support the singer/songwriter/frontman, Dustin Hamman , and the band's website says that live performances can be with anywhere [...]

So, the Festival descendeth upon Edinburgh once more, and once more we are beset by London-based Home County Yahs braying their zany way through the city until finally someone snaps and sets fire to their stupid fucking stilts once and for all. Actually, as I confess pretty sharpish, I am the classic Edinburgh Festival hypocrite, if I'm being honest with myself. I love it as much as I loathe it and I enjoy moaning about it almost as much as I enjoy the Festival itself. As a native you really do have to have the right [...]

Alright, this time for real. I reviewed this album, or at least a very close approximation of it, a few months back when Dustin Hamman first got in touch with me to invite me to have a listen. Generally I don't review albums until they are actually available for purchase, because things don't spend that long at the top of a blog page and I think that maximises the opportunity for impulse purchases. So after a lot of work You, the Darkness & Me finds a home on Hush Records , one of [...]

Portlander Dustin Hamman's band Run On Sentence , who previously released the jazzy and smart folk record Oh When The Wind Comes Down back in 2008, is set to return with their second album on Hush Records —the giant sonic step-forward that is You, The Darkness, and Me . The album—a sprawling and dynamic collage of sound and voice that radiates with talent—is a journey through the more haunting and solitary elements of nature and man. If you're looking for a new artist to invest your time with, you've found him. Don't believe me? You [...]

am 10. august erscheint das neue album von run on sentence , spätestens der zeitpunkt, an dem sich das klienicum einzuschalten hat. denn mit dustin hamman findet sich ein songwriter, dem die ehre gebürt, hier und heute erwähnt und gelobt zu werden. eine magere wohltat, aber eben eine. hush records tut sich gütlich an ihm und eben nicht erst mit dem diesjährigen "you, the darkness, and me", sondern bereits seit dem erstling "oh when the wind comes down", erschienen in 2008. hinter dem moniker run on sentence versteckt sich also vornehmlich der [...]

There's a lot to like about local songwriter Dustin Hamman: he plays under the clever moniker of Run On Sentence (yes, we journalists are biased towards fellow word nerds); he peddles an earthy, catchy fusion of folk, blues, jazz and roots ; and in the indie-music sea of bad bum-fluff beards and ironic moustaches, he stands tall with a proud with a truly spectacular crop of bushy facial hair: That's a beard that says, "I'll serenade you with my sweet-yet-strong ballads, then build you a log cabin out of [...]

I will be in Macclesfield at Unconvention, pretending to know what the fuck I am talking about when it comes to new music business models when you come to listen to this. I do get a shiny new pair of Converse, courtesy of the sponsors, which is cool. But above all, me, the chance to talk shit... well, it's just a match made in heaven isn't it. My Granddad lives in Manchester too, which is rather convenient, so on Sunday I will go round to his house and say hello. Who knows, it might even shunt [...]

With vocals reminiscent of The Cave Singers, but with miles more emotional and textural variety and an odd mix of musical styles, this does sound familiar from the word go, only to prove a little bit more elusive when you start really trying to pin it down. Initially I found myself thinking 'Ooh, that's a nice bit of the usual gothic folk noir stuff I frequently listen to'. And it is. But the instrumentation is a lot richer than that description would probably lead you to believe - more akin to the likes of Elvis Perkins than Timber [...]

The old-time folk and swinging acoustic jazz from Portland's Run On Sentence was a big fat welcome surprise to my ears this afternoon. Shaking the dust off a style rich with history and oft forgotten in pop music, Dustin Hamman and company have created a fiery and original record—and yes, it's about time someone brought back the scat. Run On Sentence - "Carrie Pt. 2" (from Oh When The Wind Comes Down )

E "The Afterlife Pt. I" sembra [...]
Oh When The Wind Comes Down has a sonorous delicacy--its lo-fi punk and Simon Joyner-inspired swagger taps into the under-stream of the nation's musical consciousness. read more

The ghost of Jeff Mangum—the Neutral Milk Hotel weird-genius who has mostly disappeared from the national eye since 1998's undisputed classic In the Aeroplane, Over the Sea —lingers throughout "The Afterlife Pt. 1," the slowly growing ballad that serves as the centerpiece to Run On Sentence's gorgeously ramshackle new record Oh When the Wind Comes Down . You can hear it in the way Dustin Hamman stretches out the last syllable of each verse, the way his nasally croon cracks when he hits an especially painful word. And those words are vulnerable almost to a fault; every strain [...]

Run On Sentence - The Afterlife Pt. 1 Run On Sentence involves an ever-rotating ensemble that draw from the songs of Dustin Hamman, a Portland-based musician who songs are built-up with tidy horn-crescendos and beautifully rendered lines such as: "Nothin' you can do about the past, it's a bullshit place on a roadless map...and there's no point hangin' 'round the reststop for directions." I'll raise a glass to that. Run On Sentence's debut album Oh When The Wind Comes Down will be released sometime this autumn on Hush records. [...]
