Where can a guy get some good instrumental post-metal? The last Red Sparowes album was slightly disappointing, mainly because the first one was so good. Pelican is okay but spotty. Mono and Don Cab have different styles going on. Where can you get something new, chunky, and technical without those grating vocals? Well, I'll give you a hint, it starts with an "R," and ends in "ussian Circles." This is a relatively new band (their first EP was in 2004) from Chicago with, I guess, some pedigree due to their previous bands. They [...]
Another week has ended. A new week is set to begin. I hope your weekends went swimmingly. Maybe some of you even swam somewhere? The weather sure has been warm enough, right? I don't really know, I'm just saying that. For all I know eighty-five percent of the country could be covered in snow. Well, since you asked...my day was nice. I went shopping this morning for groceries and toiletries, then I had a good healthy lunch, and then I spent the afternoon joking around with Steve. We walked down the street drinking matching pink smoothies. It was [...]
Enjoy. Oh yeah, and I guess Pitchfork is starting to dish out the year-end lists as well. 39) Stills – Without Feathers - This was the album that had to grow on me before I liked it. A year and a half ago I first discovered this group, and I fell in love with their debut, Logic Will Break Your Heart . The album drew many comparisons to such groups as The Strokes and Coldplay , [...]
Before the weekend comes, I realize I am running a little behind on my ABC's of VINYL, since I thought I might be done by December 1st. Oh well. 26 letters 35 days about. Who's counting? The absense of a vocalist puts the focus completely on the push and pull of the music, even when it isn't a conscious decision. Chicago's Russian Circles formed in late-2004, following the break-up of Dakota/Dakota, the math-rock band guitarist Mike Sullivan and bassist Colin DeKuiper played in. Two years later Flameshovel Records released the instrumental trio's first full-length, Enter -- a linear, dynamic post-metal album capable of appealing to fans of Mogwai and Mastodon alike. With six tracks and a run-time just shy of 45 minutes, it never sounds forced or pretentious. [...]
Sorry dudes my internet has been sparse this last week. It's getting harder to find time to make a decent post so uhh here's a bunch of mp3s I just can't write up right now. Dirty on Purpose is out on the road in support of their North Street Records debut Hallelujah Sirens . Spin Magazine gives them four stars saying: "The full-length debut from this Brooklyn foursome is a wet dream of collegiate, aural wizardry, swinging smartly between noisy rambunctiousness and delicate bedroom pop." See their video for " No Radio " and get tour dates are here . The Capitol Years are also set to hit the road. They'll head out in early October, timed with the October 4th release date for their new [...]
I've been sitting on this Russian Circles record Enter for entirely too long. I finally got around to writing the review for Pop Matters last week and really regretted dragging my feet for so long. I think I was initially intimidated by the fact that the band plays instrumental rock. I often find that I have a hard time wrapping my head around instrumental music because a) I'm not a musician and
Flameshovel Records, an upstanding independent label based in Chicago with a good reputation, was kind enough to pass along 2 CDs about two months ago. Yesterday, in the midst of my Johnny Cash, Thom Yorke, and Muse binge, I received a third. It is the new Bound Stems CD, APPRECIATION NIGHT, that is set for release on September 19th, 2006. I have to admit, I am thoroughly enjoying it between bursts of Johnny, Thom, and the boys from Devon. The final track, "55 Cross St." has received several repeat looks. The word around the campfire is that these guys and [...]

Smoosh Hello again. So I have been at King's Island the past three days, and once again have been busy before that. But now I'm here again, and within descent time considering the amount of time between my last two posts. I watched Jimmy Kimmel Live while in Cincinnati last night, and Smoosh was performing their new song " Find A Way " from there latest release, " Free To Stay ". I was absolutely blown [...]
