Theme of the night at the Joel Plaskett / Rusted Root show: Good looooookin’. The first thing that struck me when I walked into the 9:30 Club was just how darn good lookin’ Joel Plaskett actually is. The Nova Scotian musician is slim, smiling, and super well dressed (all-denim Canadian tux for the win!). His set was simple (both in the fact that he had no props and his banter was limited but friendly) and his music was clean and crisp feeling. My favorite tracks came toward the end when he played Nowhere With You [...]
Rising Belgian producer Sebastiaan Vandevoorde – formerly Villa, currently Moonlight Matters – has just put together a great rework of popular UK singer-songwriter Ben Howard ’s uplifting track “The Fear”. This is a rare instance of acoustic guitar and four-on-the-floor dance production coming together in a way that sounds not at all unnatural and actually very good. The song revolves around Howard’s bombastic, percussive guitar riffs, offset by understated bowed strings, slap bass and some upbeat drums – a formula that sort of reminds me of this beloved 90s classic . The lyrics [...]
There has been somewhat of a radical shift in holiday music over the last handful of years, as indie-acts have been putting their modern spin on what has traditionally been dominated by bland schmaltz. Arguably the artist that can be credited with spurring this moment is Sufjan Stevens , who will release his second volume of Christmas songs, Silver & Gold, in November. The massive 58-track set features a mix of traditional, classic and new music and is currently available for pre-order via the singer-songwriter's website in a variety of formats and packages. On November [...]
by: Laura Feeney Despite their separate venues, Rusted Root and The Record Company brought similar enthusiasm and style to their performances on Friday night at the Harvest Jazz and Blues Festival. These shows were not originally on my to-see list, but enthusiastic reviews persuaded me to take a chance. I soon found myself being swept up in lively, dancing crowds and losing track of time. A couple of years back, many of us around HT headquarters fell in love with the hazy lo-fi sunshine pop sounds of Crazy For You , the debut album from Best Coast , which landed at number 24 on our top albums list for 2010 . Fronted by Bethany Cosentino, the So-Cal-based band were at the forefront of the "chillwave" movement, whether they liked that distinction or not. On May 15, Best Coast will release their sophomore Jon Brion (Fiona Apple, of Montreal, Punch Brothers) produced effort The Only Place via [...]

So yesterday was the first day of Spring I'm told... Friday was beautiful and 82 degrees. Then the temperature slowly dropped over the weekend, there was some freezing rain on my windshield this morning, and temperature read 38 degrees. So it's not feeling too much like Spring right now. But that's ok, I'm still going to celebrate it's official arrival. I remember back during my freshman year of college, I noticed my listening habits changed as the weather warmed up and it'd definitely done that a little this year too. Just like beer has a rhythm of the [...]
