We recently came across a track that must've been looked over in our inbox. "One Night, One Kiss" by The Russian Futurists is definitely worth a listen, so we're giving it the buzz it deserved some time ago. The track offers 'call and answer' style vocals between Matthew Adam Hart and Heavy Blinkers ' Ruth Minnikin, done extremely well. The sappy love lyrics and other fluffy ingredients would be enough to bake any "cheese"-cake however, that's not the impression we're left with at all. Contextually in the vein of Stars' "My Favourite Book" (Canada gets [...]

Ruth Minnikin' Highlight: "'One Night, One Kiss' is about that feeling you get when you see someone for the first time and instantly fall in love with them, without even saying a word," Matt Hart of the Russian Futurists tells Spinner. Emma maakt redelijk beschaafde Americana. Meet Me on the Moon klinkt, op een enkele voorzichtige gitaarsolo na, erg netjes. De plaat had wat mij betreft wel wat ruwe randjes mogen hebben. Maar Emma schrijft erg fijne songs die snel blijven hangen bij de luisteraar. Vooral The [...]

Click here to download the compilation. Anyone loving the Christmas season? If you are in the holiday spirit, Canadian indie style. You should check out Ho! Ho! Ho! Canada Deux from Oh! Canada (aka The Line of Best Fit). Its their second compilation and features a slew of great Canadian talent. From the likes of Great Lake Swimmers , The Zolas , Basia Bulat , Leif Vollebekk , The Russian Futurists , Evening Hymns , Snailhouse and many [...]

For many, the appeal of Matthew Adam Hart 's compositions was just how much he put into the bedroom recording style electro pop/hip hop, hand clap ready bangers that surfaced after months spent up in his lab assem-bl-in . The trademark image fans had was that of a reclusive Hart spending hour after hour tinkering with textures, paying tribute to Kent Hrbek with his grizzly beard and Twins cap, but with the release of "The Weight's On The Wheels" we find Hart wearing cardigans and wing tips, and more importantly, willing to add polish and sheer mass to [...]

As part of our partnership with the Canadian Blast & The Local present Canada festival on June 30th, we have caught up with some of the artists involved to find out what their home towns are like. This time it's the turn of ex-Guthrie and Heavy Blinker Ruth Minnikin . Who are you and what city are you from? Ruth Minnikin from Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada What is the city known for (and is that fair?) Halifax is known for having one [...]

In an odd way, it's fitting that Catriona Sturton and Ruth Minnikin are playing a show here in Halifax @ The Company House on April 8th. You see, that's my birthday and as we all get older, it becomes more and more tempting to turn back time, rehash the past and get nostalgic over bands that helped shape our young musical personalities, especially since both Ruth and Catriona were fixtures in the Halifax scene in the late 90's. Thankfully, both Catriona and Ruth's songs have grown with them over the last 10+ [...]

Thursday is here, so it's time once again to fire up our favorite semi-regular fourth-day feature: Video Hits. Last time out I talked about doing an all-female version of our clip show, but unfortunately I don't have enough content to make that happen. But I didn't want to wait, so I've hooked up an eclectic selection that closes with two strong women from out this way. Like any and all rap groups from their hometown of Edmonton, The Wheat Pool gets a hearty thumbs-up from the hill. Hauntario is full of good songs, [...]

Nova Scotia group Ruth Minnikin & Her Bandwagon released their peppy orchestral pop album Depend On This in the fall. The rather abundant group of musicians will undoubtedly take the stage with aplomb at this year's CMW. Check out the title track from the album here. CMW performance: Date: March 10th Time: 10:00pm Venue: Cadillac Lounge Ruth Minnikin's website Ruth Minnikin's Myspace

Tonight sees the kick-off of the 2010 edition of the In The Dead of Winter Festival here in Halifax with a sold out Ani DiFranco show at the Rebecca Cohn Auditorium. IDOW has been warming the cockles of musical hearts here for the last five winters, giving fans and performers alike a reason to look forward to the slushy dead zone that is normally Halifax at the end of January/start of February. Since the Ani show is sold out, I figured we'd start our preview with a look at the festivities on Wednesday night, [...]

Ruth Minnikin and the bands she played in were always ahead of the curve. I mean, Booming Airplanes got signed to EMI when she was barely out of high school and without a doubt, if The Guthries were making music today in the " everybody wants to be a rootsy, lap steel heavy, cowboy shirt wearing music player " they'd be huge. That same "what if" type pondering could easily be applied to the orchestral pop The Heavy Blinkers delivered so well. So even though Ruth's solo work was strongly rooted in [...]

After a month off (having a child go through heart surgery was only slightly more important than blogging), we are back with the herohill/music nova scotia band of the month . September seems like the perfect time to settle into the sounds of Ruth Minnikin and Her Bandwagon . The Haligonian song writer has been a part of some of the best (and most criminally ignored) bands to come out of the city, The Heavy Blinkers and The Guthries . If the internet and blogs existed like they do now, The Blinkers would [...]

It's Friday, and I'm exhausted from a late night of watching Duke shit the bed against Villanova. So instead of boring you all with an epic review of a band you don't care about... I'll give you a couple quick hits about bands you should, but may not care about. Sound good? myspace When I first talked about Halifax's River Water , I really couldn't say much. I wanted to, but I kept stumbling trying to find the words. The EP was three [...]

myspace Here's the deal. Other than Joel Plaskett , Ruth Minnikin probably has the most music cred of any Nova Scotian. Her career is quite remarkable. She signed to a major at 17. She guested as a vocalist on musician on over 45 records. She was/is part of some of the best bands to ever roll out of Nova Scotia ( The Gutheries & The Heavy Blinkers ), but her amazingly unique voice can be heard on bands as different as Old Man Luedecke and The Russian Futurists [...]

Some strange, stark and lovely songs from Ruth Minnikin. Do any of you know her from The Guthries? I can see why people compare her to Leonard Cohen and Gillian Welch - it's the mix of an unflinching gaze and a spot of playfulness. You don't often get heartbreak, banjo, cracked vocals and french horn all in one go, do you? Recorded in just a couple of days, Folk Art is a 30 minute sprint through some of the most inventive and affecting music I've heard for ages. Recommended. [...]

Fairly busy week for your old friend Shane, but I thought I'd take time out to do you folks a frickin' service . Well, if you live or work in downtown Halifax, I'm doing you a service, otherwise you might not care. Starting tomorrow, there will be a series of free concerts taking place at lunchtime on the Grand Parade, and the lineup is fairly impressive: Wednesday, July 23 – Gypsophilia (gypsy-jazz) Thursday, July 24 – David Myles (folk) Fridays, July 25 – Brent Randall (indie/pop/alternative) Wednesday, July 30 – Thom Swift (roots/country-blues/rag) [...]
