Although the week was far more exciting for reunions and festival news, we still rummaged up enough new tracks to put together this week's Top 10 MP3s of the Week. 10. The Cairo Gang - "Take Your Time" Often known for backing Bonnie "Prince" Billy, The Cairo Gang have the chops to stand out on their own. To prove that, the group is set to release their latest in what has been a string of great LPs, in the form of Tiny Rebels. Early track "Take Your Time" plays out like Woods hanging [...]

With an entire intro spiel originally planned for this edition of Week in Pop, I ended up scrapping the formalities after my attention got caught in the following media hyperblast diversions. Kim Deal said goodbye to the Pixies, while 2 Chainz may or may not have gotten robbed in SF, while we continue to ponder whether or not the self-ordained "nucleus of culture" Kanye West is really cheating on Kim Kardashian and what effect will this have on Yeezus's reception in the buzzosphere...

Listen closely to this slinky slow jam from Ryan Power's new album, and you'll hear the sound of human panting being used as a percussive element. It's almost too faint to notice the first time ... read more

During the last couple of days, while enjoying a 4-day-weekend with slightly depressing weather here in Switzerland, I've been returning and returning to NNA Tapes' Soundcloud page. The reason is/was this wonderfully smooth new «wierdo» pop tune by Vermont's Ryan Power , which will be released as part of his upcoming new album Identity Picks (available June 25th). Give it a listen!
Ryan Power shares "The Prize" from Identity Picks. Burlington, Vermont's Ryan Power makes stunningly outré pop music imbued with strange funk and damaged soul. Ryan has been self-producing and releasing music since 2002...

Ryan Power has never meet an influence he didn't like, nor one that he couldn't twist in service to his own skewed sense of pop idealism. The latest song "The Prize" from his forthcoming Identity Picks LP, due out June 25th via NNA Tapes, is just more proof that Power can draw on widely disparate musical touchstones to concoct his own concise brew of fractured pop music. The glossy pop/rock of the late 702s is set square in his sites on this track, and artists like Todd Rundgren and Electric Light Orchestra are easy points of reference, as [...]
Burlington, Vermont singer-songwriter Ryan Power isn't all that well known, but he makes the kind of off-kilter, dementedly complicated outsider pop that people (specifically, other musicians) get obsessed with. "The Prize" is the lead single ... read more
If there was one blatantly overlooked and underappreciated artist last year, it surely was Vermont's prime loner Ryan Power, whose delightfully off, subtly forward-looking and above all heartwarming, disarmingly sincere I Don't Want To Die for some reason never really received the amount of praise it clearly would've deserved, at least in the eyes of this humble observer. Good thing is, that guy is of the truly prolific sort, so we only had to wait roughly another year to be blessed with new material. No need, really, to change all that much, so expect more bittersweet melodies on [...]
The last time we heard from the prolific avant-pop songwriter Ryan Power was about a year ago, surrounding the release of his fifth LP, I Don't Want To Die for NNA Tapes - an excellent and overlooked glimpse into his expansive discography. Power lives in Burlington, VT, and his voice is another essential from the region's community of artists like Blanche Blanche Blanche, Happy Jawbone Family Band, and Chris Weisman, all of whom are currently doing some of most interesting things to bridge the gap between "pop" and "experimental." Now, we are pleased to report that NNA will [...]

What would a half-year critical list be without a rundown of one's favourite songs? I initially planned to limit things to singles only, but after so many excellent tracks got left out, I made "premiered in 2012" the qualifier instead. Without a doubt, this list will change more than any other by year's end. Picking my brain for its most addicted-to MP3s was no easy feat, especially when limiting the list to 20, so hopefully this makes up for my utter absence in the entire month of May. Bonus: Things are ordered in reverse for your listening pleasure, a mix [...]

Ryan Power makes soulful pop music, influenced by elements of jazz, folk, and funk. Think Bon Iver's self-titled album with vocals that you can understand and less lyrically vague. His new album I Don't Want To Die arrives via NNA Tapes on April 3rd. Download the album's title track below. Read more »

You may remember, (depending on how much of a Joel Chima super fan you are), that I flipped my shit when I heard the debut single to come from Ryan Power ’s new LP, I Don’t want to Die . What grabbed me, amongst other things, were the track’s simplicities. The gentle and somber production allowed the lyrics and themes to gently soak in, leaving for a truly moving experience. Power ’s new track is quite the different beast. It trots along with flute like synths as [...]

I've already said it a couple of times in a couple of places , this dude is weird but totally awesome, as is his album I Don't Want to Die , which is still forthcoming in spite of the fact that the mp3s on our hard drive already start to wear off due to heavy spinning. "Mondo Rush" is the next track to be unveiled off Ryan Power 's full-length that without doubt is one of our favorite releases of 2012, mark our words. I Don't Want to Die [...]

Burlington -based BTW Ryan Power's I Don't Want To Die is out April 3rd on NNA Tapes. Below, we have "Mondo Rush," the album's second track, which deals with alcohol-related themes via Max Tundra-tinted synth-pop. It's yours, below: Read More...

With the wealth of genre bending music circling around the web, (THANKS MR. INTERNET), it’s often the most reserved, soft spoken and simple music that takes you by surprise. Ryan Power ’s delicately pleading pop song, ‘ I don’t want to die ’, is one of those tracks. It glistens with its smooth and subdued production, while Powers’ vocals act as the most beautiful suicide negotiation ever spoken. Full of regret, anguish and fear; it’s a realist human struggle story that can’t fail to move. I [...]
