Ryan Power makes soulful pop music, influenced by elements of jazz, folk, and funk. Think Bon Iver's self-titled album with vocals that you can understand and less lyrically vague. His new album I Don't Want To Die arrives via NNA Tapes on April 3rd. Download the album's title track below. Read more »

You may remember, (depending on how much of a Joel Chima super fan you are), that I flipped my shit when I heard the debut single to come from Ryan Power 's new LP, I Don't want to Die . What grabbed me, amongst other things, were the track's simplicities. The gentle and somber production allowed the lyrics and themes to gently soak in, leaving for a truly moving experience. Power 's new track is quite the different beast. It trots along with flute like synths as [...]

I've already said it a couple of times in a couple of places , this dude is weird but totally awesome, as is his album I Don't Want to Die , which is still forthcoming in spite of the fact that the mp3s on our hard drive already start to wear off due to heavy spinning. "Mondo Rush" is the next track to be unveiled off Ryan Power 's full-length that without doubt is one of our favorite releases of 2012, mark our words. I Don't Want to Die [...]

Burlington -based BTW Ryan Power's I Don't Want To Die is out April 3rd on NNA Tapes. Below, we have "Mondo Rush," the album's second track, which deals with alcohol-related themes via Max Tundra-tinted synth-pop. It's yours, below: Read More...

With the wealth of genre bending music circling around the web, (THANKS MR. INTERNET), it's often the most reserved, soft spoken and simple music that takes you by surprise. Ryan Power 's delicately pleading pop song, ' I don't want to die ', is one of those tracks. It glistens with its smooth and subdued production, while Powers' vocals act as the most beautiful suicide negotiation ever spoken. Full of regret, anguish and fear; it's a realist human struggle story that can't fail to move. I [...]

This one dropped into my inbox last week and hit me completely unexpected, not least as the last thing I heard from our favorite Vermont enterprise ( no offense ) NNA Tapes was the listed creepiness of Nate Young's Stay Asleep . On top of that, the above album cover does not give you slightest hint of what will happen to your consciousness once you've hit the play button: New Hampshire native Ryan Power makes simple yet soulful, achingly honest and unashamedly beautiful avant pop that blissfully lies somewhere left of the field [...]

mp3: Ryan Power - I Don't Want to Die We caught Ryan Power 's live show in the extremely intimate den at Northeast Kingdom (Bushwick) a couple years ago and he absolutely blew our minds. So naturally, we are excited to see Power getting a release on the equally beloved NNA Tapes (founder Toby Aronson played our Winter Showcase in 2011). The new LP I Don't Want To Die is set for release on April 3. Ryan Power is a true original, unlike anything [...]
From the vibrant enclave of Burlington, VT comes an artist one of you called the North Country's "best kept secret." Verily, after spending the last week with Ryan Power's latest release I Don't Want To Die , and seeing the reaction it gets from heard-it-all friends, it really is pretty weird that more people aren't aware of what he's doing. So let's help change that, because this is music with a fairly prodigious talent at play. The style's impossible to peg with a catch-all genre tag, so let's start with "exploratory-pop," and get you started [...]

Given that everyone in Vermont has the same area code - the state's population is only 600,000, after all - I could have easily copped out of spotlighting a single city in Vermont; the small state's fraught with interesting, tight-knit scenes like Brattleboro's punk nucleus and Bennington's folksier inclinations (shouts Mountain Man ). But, Burlington, for its size (40,000, good enough to be the biggest city in the state), is Vermont's unnaturally dense music hub; best known for launching Phish into the world, Burlington's maintained a robust music atmosphere since well before they got big, thanks to the constantly-refreshing [...]
Read Tiny Mix Tapes' "Cerberus" column #19 HERE "Cerberus" #19 just came out and it's a doozy. This time around I got to review: A 7-inch split between New Zealand's The Bats and Songs on Spring Press Radar Eyes' 7-inch on HoZac Records a great Puke Eaters 7-inch on Vauva Records the lumbering beast that [...]

Burlington, Vermont's Ryan Power recently captivated the Northeast Kingdom in Bushwick with his unique and bizarre one-man electro opera. With several Vermont celebrities on hand - most notably, Heloise of Heloise & the Savoir Faire - Power delivered an entrancing vocal performance, singing beautifully over meticulous and multi-dimensional electro tracks. Power recently made waves when he opened for buzz band Women in Manhattan. The latest LP, Is It Happening? was released in 2007. Ryan Power - Shodi and Dotty (mp3) [...]

One of the best developments in the Vermont music scene has been Tick Tick . Desiring more indie shows in the area, Tick Tick decided to fill the void by promoting shows in unique venues all over town. Whether, it was in a bar, art gallery or church, if the folks at Tick Tick digged a band, they'd promote the show. In the end, they filled the area with 50 additional shows this year that likely wouldn't have happened otherwise. In fact, my favorite show of the year was the one they put together [...]

Ryan Power has left the Green Mountains for the Ozarks. I'm not entirely sure why but the note on his website gives the impression it's just for the winter. If anyone knows more about it, let me know. I saw Ryan Power at Positive Pie a few months ago and loved his post-rock sounds enough to pick up his disc loventropy . Besides being a good album, it has some of the coolest packaging in my entire CD collection. In addirion to the move to [...]

On Friday night, folks in the Burlington area are going to get a musical treat. Eleven bands under one roof (or, more accurately, on one patio) over the course of about seven hours. It sounds a bit chaotic but also a lot of fun. I wouldn't put too much faith in the exact start times for all of these bands but here's the schedule: 4:30 Greg Davis 5:30 Hammer & Saw 6:00 Ryan Power 6:30 Home Items 7:00 Oak 7:30 Magic Sparkle 8:00 The Smittens [...]

It's not too often that you get to hit five indie bands in one night in Vermont. However, the stars aligned last Friday night and I was able to catch Phantom Buffalo , The Jazz Guys and Danielson at Higher Ground before heading back to Montpelier to catch the second sets from both Ryan Power & the Prons and The Cush at Positive Pie . That makes for a lot to get through. So, let's get going. jds , a [...]
