Well, here we are. After running down our picks for the year's best artwork , videos , remixes , mixes , singles , and EPs , we have arrived at that magical moment: our roundup of 20122s best albums. As was the case with our previous lists, this was not easy at all to curate. Despite what your friend, favorite music critic, parents, WHOEVER might have said, the past year brought with it some fucking great music and some albums we'll be labeling as classics down the road. Decreasing sales aside, [...]

★★★★☆ Straight out the gate, Christina Ryat is sizing up Björk’s crown. There’s no getting away from it, a fractured voice from a creature blossoming from electronic fissions and bugged collages trivialising the need for straight lines to match neatly, exhaling a kinked beauty that twists round awkward sonic oblongs. Buying into the Brainfeeder ethos ("Howl") and helping widen its margins, the free-spirited vocal style can be intimidating and diva-ish (which should have other alt producers queuing round the block to work with her), but curiosity and the guessing as to what’s coming next overtakes feeling [...]
More Dali and Moving Castle than Ginsberg, Ryat's video for "Howl" finds her animated analogue bewitched under a full moon and murdering senior citizens with something called skandy. Ostensibly, that is candy for skanks ( word to B. Stiller ). But there is nothing sordid about the music. It's hypnotic harp-riddled electronic layered with vocals reminiscent of Beth Gibbons and Andreya Triana . Like cornbread, there is absolutely nothing wrong with that. This reminds me of Radiohead's King of Limbs but with a female vocalist. Makes sense considering the Brainfeeder aesthetic bore a heavy role [...]

RYAT - Totem Brainfeeder: 2012 “Are my speakers going out?” I ask myself. I have a reliable pair of monitors. They belong in a recording studio, but found their way on my desk somehow. With 5” Kevlar low-frequency drivers, 70 watts of bi-amplified power and magnetic shielding to prevent cell phone chatter, these speakers do the beats justice. So, of course they’re not going out. No, instead Brainfeeder’s latest artist has produced something so interesting, so beyond the monotony of cookie-cutter-beats and so weird that I have questioned the reliability of studio-grade audio equipment. But, [...]
RYAT's beautiful new single, " Howl ", receives some fittingly stirring (and animated!) visuals today via the team of director Ivan Ives and animator Rajesh Bhavnani. It portrays a young girl who finally finds the place where she belongs, which is the moon. She then dumps out a bag of Skittles-esque "Skandy" and shows off her dance moves amid the bright colors. This has to be some kind of play on howling at the moon, right? Watch the video below. RYAT's Totem is out soon.

During the Vancouver Brainfeeder Showcase last week, alongside Brainfeeder acts Samiyam , Mono/Poly and MAST (her best friend and "undiscovered genius" who toured and collaborated with her a couple years back), RYAT premiered the sounds we can expect to hear on her forthcoming LP, Totem ( Brainfeeder ) . Since the release of her last record, Avant Gold , Christina McGeehan has stepped away from instrumentals, focusing more so on electronic experimentation. In regards to her upcoming release, she says- "Totem is much more compositional and [...]
RYAT will release her new album, Totem , on June 4 via her new label home of Brainfeeder. Yeah, that's right, the strongest label in the music world just keeps getting stronger. And from the sound of Totem lead single "Howl", the label's output will remain just as consistent as ever. The track indeed features some howling, though it's done in the most beautiful way possible amid rapid pace-changing drums and heavenly synth textures. If you like your music lush and a lil' out there, you're going to love RYAT. Stream the track below and [...]

When Brainfeeder signs an artist it's always interesting to find out what brand of weird they're bringing to the label. In the case of Ryat, it's singing, which is weird enough for a roster comprised mostly of beat-nerds. This mix made to promote the upcoming Mono/Poly and Ryat West Coast tour is full of what you might expect: beats full of bleeps, blips, and other strange sounds and samples, but despite being expected, it's not predictable. And it's enough to make you look forward to hearing what's on Ryat's debut, Totem , due out in June.

Originally hailing from Philly although now shacked up in L.A., RYAT is the unpronounceable moniker of Christina McGeehan and Howl is lifted from her forthcoming 'spirit animal'-inspired LP Totem (expected June 4th on Brainfeeder ). Like Olivia Merilahti vocally imitating idol Björk over an expansive array of glitches and dislocated twinkles of harps that sound as though drafted in from some distant fragment of history, it prowls like ominous portent as McGeehan howls lovably, palpably embodying lupine aesthetic as intended.

If you're a fan of the good vibrations of Bobby Mcferrin (most famous for his 1988 hit "Don't Worry, Be Happy" ), then I have no clue if you'll like his son Taylor's music, as they sound absolutely nothing alike. This stellar track from his recent Early Riser EP is kind've everything you'd want in a summertime chiller. Its production is restrained the whole time, allowing the various elements of the song to whisper their way to the front and sulk to the back, creating a proper feeling of tension that precedes an emotional buildup that doesn't [...]
Welcome to another edition of Hypem Hunting, where we utilize The Hype Machine to find a bunch of songs we've never heard, based upon searching for a random word. This week, we'll be exploring the theme of "time". Why, you ask? First off, because time is fleeting. Second, because I haven't really had any of it free the past couple of weeks. And third, because it is a word that produces many results when searching for it on The Hype Machine. So here are this week's finds. When I saw the [...]

:dailchill: Today's delivery is brought to you by Taylor McFerrin . I'm a big supporter of having sex everyday but especially on the weekend. And, Saturday is here and there's no better day to do the deed and luckily Taylor's track is here to help facilitate it. The track I'm bringing to you today is called "Place In My Heart" which features the vocals from RyAT. Taylor's production is amazing but RyAT really brings the sexiness of this track to fruition. And just to give you a little background; Taylor McFerrin is one the artists signed to [...]

Philadelphia's RYAT concoct an outing of jumbled beat and implied frenzy on "Superficial Friction" from their album, Avant Gold . http://www.ryat.info/ http://twitter.com/#!/RYAT RYAT facebook

Place in My Heart – первый сингл с альбома Тейлора МакФеррина «Early Rider», который выйдет в этом году на Brainfeeder.
To celebrate today’s crop of releases, here are new mp3s from Richard Ashcroft, Brooklyn Rundfunk Orkestrata, Buffalo Tom, Carol Bui, Dam Mantle, Dinosaur Bones, Grails, Memphis, Alexi Murdoch, Parts & Labor, R.E.M., RYAT, Shotgun Jimmie, the Sound Of Growing Up, Starfucker, Tiger Bones, Kurt Vile, Alex Winston, Wolf People and Wye Oak. Also, vote for your favorite [...]

This is the kind of leftfield pop that we can get with. Glitches and electronic hiccups wrapped around vocals and melody, while synth and drums provide the bottom line. That’s what we’re getting from this Ryat track, ‘Superficial Friction’, which is taken from the band’s forthcoming album ‘Avant Gold’ (out on March 8). Listen to the track here: ‘Superficial Friction’
