Composed in a style reminiscent of his work with Bon Iver, Sean Carey 's EP release, Hoyas, explores his own strengths as a professionally trained percussionist. Inimitable and tentative in its electronic musings, the EP is a collection of tracks best saved for a rainy day. "Two Angles" starts with promise, building anticipation with a succession of deliberate and pointed beats, but unfortunately the magnetism teeters out in the middle of the song; the guitar distortion that enters at the second minute is listless, and not purposefully so, as it aims for ambience but sounds instead like lackluster strumming. Liz Flyntz If we can regard Beach House literally as their namesake, which is to say as a holiday getaway, a reliably stolid place to escape from the real world, then the amount of adoration they've gotten for largely sticking to their skeletal formula through four albums now is understandable. Their fans don't want them to reinvent themselves with each outing; they want that comforting blanket of Victoria Legrand's narcoleptic vocals and whirring keyboard interwoven with Alex Scally's languid slide guitar, and across their first two records - their 2006 self-titled debut and [...]

S. Carey - Hoyas EP By James Blake There's something suspicious about side projects. Accusations of unrest instantly attach themselves to the act in question with rumors of a dreaded farewell tour looming large. But do the same rules apply to Bon Iver, a band born from a cabin in the woods of Wisconsin? They survived their frontman's rendezvous with Kanye but, traditionally more reserved drummer, S. Carey 's latest offering Hoyas could hold more answers. Opener 'Two Angles' instantly calms [...]

It certainly can't hurt to kick off about this week's new releases by mentioning the new album from Silversun Pickups . Their album Neck of the Woods (pictured) is out this week, and it's just hard to imagine a band that works harder. Overall, it's a good week for indie releases. Not only from Silversun Pickups, but also S. Carey , Royal Headache , and Here We Go Magic . Dee Snider (that dude from Twisted Sister ) has a solo record and The Duke Spirit get remixed. The [...]

i just googled "random," and this dog photo was like the 6th thing. so, i went with it. its funny, times are a changing in the music blog world. a year or so ago, people were offering up songs with pretty much every email. nowadays, its just news and tour dates. honestly, if youre in a band, and more or less a local one at that, do yourself a favor and include a song to share. bloggers are so much more willing to report on you if they can actually hear what you sound like. its not rocket science. anyway, [...]

S. Carey is better known as the percussionist/jack of all trades from Bon Iver, this is a song from S. Carey's upcoming EP called 'Hoyas', due out May 8th.

According to Astronautalis, a Minneapolis-based rapper, he's teamed up with Justin Vernon of Bon Iver fame, as well as S. Carey and Ryan Olsen of Gayngs. I've always been a big fan of what I've heard from Astronautalis, and this could shape into a very cool project. Apparently the group has the LP already completed, and want to get it released and onto touring as quickly as possible. As for what the output might sound like, the only word we've got so far is from Astro's recent interview with City Pages in which he says "it will only sound like [...]

What can Justin Vernon not do? The indie crooner is reported to have finished recording a new album with S. Carey, Ryan Olson (founder of Gayngs), and rapper Astronautalis. Is this another hip hop turn for Vernon since his collaborations with Kanye West in 2010? Read more »

This morning, Minneapolis music blog Gimme Noise revealed that Minneapolis rapper Astronautalis , aka Andy Bothwell, and close neighbor and Bon Iver frontman Justin Vernon turned a whiskey-fueled weekend into a series of intense, creative recording sessions. With the help of Bon Iver member and multi-instrumentalist S. Carey as well as producer Ryan Olson, the group took to Vernon's April Base recording studio and got to work. When speaking on the process of recording at April Base, Bothwell said, "[b]y the time I got there, they had about [...]

Photo by Andrew Bothwell It's a good thing that what happens in Justin Vernon 's cabin only stays in Justin Vernon's cabin for so long. First, there was the mysterious joint effort with James Blake, "Fall Creek Boys Choir" , that remained under inscrutable wraps before eventually winding up on Blake's Enough Thunder EP. Now, as The A.V. Club points out, Bon Iver' s frontman has a new collaborative project that began this past weekend at that same den of rapturous aural iniquity in the woods of Eau Claire, [...]
The Minneapolis City Pages reports that Bon Iver's Justin Vernon has formed a new band with the folksy Minneapolis indie-rapper Astronautilis and that the two holed up to start recording a new album this weekend. The collaboration also includes Gayngs mastermind Ryan Olson (who's presumably the connecting thread here) and Bon Iver drummer/solo artist S. Carey. Read More...

In a few days, the Coachella music festival will begin in California, and among the mass number of bands set to perform is Other Lives , an indie group from Oklahoma that is quickly rising to fame. Formed in 2004, Other Lives has released a number of albums to date and has gained attention through its touring with talents such as S. Carey , Bon Iver , and most recently, Radiohead . If you're lucky enough to be in the [...]
S. Carey stays true to his modern-classical repetition of colloquial traditions of electronic music and beat-making with his new EP. Hoyas comes out May 8 on Jagjaguwar and is the follow-up to his debut LP, All We Grow. "Two Angles" is the first track on the EP, and it celebrates and embraces love with beats that pulse [...]
