Your fantastic Friday: ► The Lonely Wild celebrates the release of their new album "The Sun As It Comes" (out April 2 via Ursa Major Recordings) at the Satellite tonight and they've got the Janks and the Wild Reeds to join in the fun. ► Intellectual eletro-heads Fol Chen headline the Bootleg with Royal Canoe as suport. ► The Troubadour hosts London's indie pop outfit Veronica Falls . Brilliant Colors and Golden Grrls open. ► Foxygen returns to L.A. tonight. This time, they're playing the Echo and toting Sam Flax [...]
Kicking off your weekend, the Friday fare: ► We don't know if it will buy you a new life, but $30 will get you a ticket to tonight's "Summerland" tour at the Greek Theatre, and probably some fond memories of 1990s radio. Everclear — that's the band's new (yes, new) video for "Be Careful What You Ask For" from the new album "Invisible Stars," above — heads up the lineup that features Sugar Ray , Gin Blossoms , Lit and Marcy Playground . Wonderful. ► Rock quintet [...]

Omniflux arrived on our radar with a bang in October with the brooding "Boy Caught in a Dress," and the solo incarnation of Mahsa Zargaran figures to stay there if she keeps churning out singles like her new "She and Him." Zargaran, a classically trained pianist known in local rock circles as the drummer for rockers Sabrosa Purr and electro-poppers Big Black Delta, lets "She and Him" simmer somewhere in the penumbra where trance meets dream. Riveting. And not to be confused with She and Him. ||| Download: "She and Him" [...]

New year, new month, new free residencies: ► L.A. quartet Chasing Kings , their debut album "Nice Guys" on the way in March, hold forth at the Satellite, supported on opening night by Toy Bombs, Cassorla and Brendan Hines. ► Bootleg Theater residents Princeton have new music coming too — the quartet's sophomore album "Remembrance of Things to Come" will be out Feb. 21. The first night of January residency features Lesands and Red Pony Clock. ► Indie-rock quintet Seasons kick off the year with the release of their [...]

Mahsa Zargaran can be all sticks and fury when she's banging the skins for L.A. rockers Sabrosa Purr and Big Black Delta, but the Iranian-born multi-instrumentalist is not just a little drummer girl. Zargaran is classically trained pianist — and, in her solo project Omniflux , a sculptor of brooding art-rock that fans of PJ Harvey and Garbage may want to check out. Omniflux has released a single per month since August, all made in Zargaran's home studio, and the Corey Nickols-directed video for "Boy Caught in a Dress" plays with the song's very drummer-girl angst: "I am lost [...]

►Best Bang For Your Buck Award goes to: Taylor Locke & the Roughs along with Sabrosa Purr and Miracle Parade at Bootleg Bar. It also gets my vote for the sexiest rock show of the night and, yes, I’m talking about the music and the musicians. ►Aussie-to-L.A. seems to be a running theme this week. Oh look, it’s Aussies-to L.A. Neon Hymns continuing their Friday night residency at Hotel Café. Theirs is a familiar sound (listen to the track "Whatever Happened" ) , but the passion and heart behind it (as well as [...]
LA loves the power pop/rock of Taylor Locke & the Roughs and you’ll love seeing them for FREE!

When worlds collide? The FYF Fest and the Sunset Strip Music Festival each will announce their lineups on Wednesday, and the rumor mill is churning with names. Let's put our ears to the ground: ► Even without having announced a lineup, FYF had a $30 presale on Tuesday and sold out of that allotment. Regular tickets ($35) go on sale Friday for the Sept. 3 event — which promoter Sean Carlson said Tuesday via Twitter will be held "in a new location in downtown L.A." The notoriously [...]
LA's Sabrosa Purr is a collision of stoner fuzz and metal punched up by guitar rock and glam, as ethereal and enigmatic as any drug induced head trip, yet no laws need be broken in order to indulge.

Yesterday, The Axis of Audio , which includes Consequence of Sound , Antiquiet , Some Kind of Awesome , Rock It Out! Blog , and Twenty Four Bit , alongside Knuckle Rumbler , made SXSW history by debuting what will no doubt remain an annual tradition. Set at the The Rumbler Lounge, aka Peckerheads on 6th, the incredible inaugural lineup featured unique and stellar performances by each act on the bill. From Hollerado's Menno Versteeg setting up shop in the middle of the audience to Le Butcherettes' Teri Gender Bender nearly getting her head cut off, things [...]

South by Southwest is, to quote the great Sufjan Steven, "too much." Like humanly, it's impossible to attend even 3% of the unofficial day parties, official showcases, super important panels, and VIP BBQs. That's not to mention the increasingly real threat of secret Foo Fighters and Kanye shows, plus the requirement of seeing Odd Future at least three times. And even with all that, you still have to make time to visit your favorite taco truck/Tex-Mex/giant burger stand before running back to the convention center in hopes of stealing a couple Kind bars and lanyards, both of which you [...]

Tonight's top shows: ► Mavis Staples , the 71-year-old Rock and Roll Hall of Famer who just won her first Grammy (for "You're Not Alone," her collaboration with Jeff Tweedy), plays an early show at the Satellite. ► Later the Satellite, the Entrance Band kicks off a Thursday night residency. ► L.A. rockers Great Northern and Sabrosa Purr team up for show at the Bootleg Theater, with Moving Picture Show opening. ► Crystal Castles play to a sold-out Fox Theater in Pomona. [...]

cannoneers of the new command CANNONEERS OF THE NEW COMMAND, SABROSA PURR, MOVING PICTURE SHOW, AND DESERTED COASTAL PROPERTY ON MONDAY JAN. 10TH AT THE ECHO, 1822 WEST SUNSET BOULEVARD, LOS ANGELES. 8:30PM/ FREE/ 21+.

For most of five years, L.A. hard rockers Sabrosa Purr have roared uncomfortably (at least for those who like their genre lines nice and clean) between the post-punk/shoegaze and metal worlds. On their long-awaited full-length album "To the Crickets and the Ghosts" (quietly released digitally this year), the quartet creates its own little shriekdom — with bassist Angie Mattson and drummer Mahsa Zargaran holding up the low end while guitarists Jeff Mendel and Will Love rip as if it's the 1980s on the Sunset Strip. The sprawling track "The Lovely People" has been around since their [...]
