Sure, we highlight Mr. Sad Brad Smith quite a bit here but who can deny the man's many charms? Not this reporter, that's for sure. This show is a bit different in that word, from the man himself, is that it may be his last for at least four months. Why? Well, he doesn't say why [...]

In Tall Buildings | photo by Elise Bergman March is finally here. You know what that means? Spring is in the air, snow is melting on the ground and pedestrians are spraining their ankles in newly formed potholes. Anyway, let's get on with our picks for this weekend's top shows, shall we... We've got In Tall Buildings at Metro , Tyler Jon Tyler at The Hideout and Nomo [...]

Let's start at the Empty Bottle. This White Mystery sounds interesting. Have you heard of this "garage" as a form of music? It's crazy. I mean, a garage is where your car goes but apparently it means something musically as well. I've heard the White Mystery and they are great. I predict big things. Oh, they also have a new album coming out soon ? Didn't they just release one like [...]

Chicago singer-songwriter Sad Brad Smith recently released a new video for the song "Old Days Are Here Again" from his most recent full-length, Love Is Not What You Need . The video definitely does harken back to the old days...the old days of the Nintendo Entertainment System, or NES for all you hardcore gamers, and features heavily pixilated, 16-bit animation, by Bernie McGovern, of forests, underwater cities and even Chicago, which happens to be sinking into a river of red. It's rather, how do you say, rad. Check it out:
As you have read previously on this site, Sad Brad Smith is very much an up-and-coming star that seems incredibly close to a breakthrough. The adjectives seem to have been exhausted on the previous articles, so now the discussion of his songs themselves can finally be brought into the forefront. His debut album, Love is Not What you Need , is strong, well-crafted singer-songwriter fare that is a perfect fit for a cold winter's day or a rainy summer afternoon. Smith has the fantastic ability, like They Might be Giants, The Mountain Goats, or even [...]
It seems like the fairy tale that all artists dream of and hope for when they are struggling and navigating the treacherous path of being a self-sustaining performer: One day you are making ends meet as best you can, doing whatever performances you can to gain a name, and then suddenly someone passes your name along to someone famous. That person hears or sees your work and then immediately wants you in their next project. This is the basic story line for local Chicago singer-songwriter Sad Brad Smith. Playing and recording music in his living [...]
Sad Brad Smith is on the very edge of stardom. With a critical and fan favorite song in a major Hollywood movie and interviews and coverage from major newspapers including LA Times and USA Today , Smith is a few shaky steps away from a big thing. The local Chicago singer/songwriter is working to take those few steps with the release of his new album, Love Is Not What You Need , another album on the way this year, and a big local push with a tour in the works. This past cold, snowy Chicago [...]

Whoa, dude. It's the weekend. Better get your groovy self out to some shows! There's plenty o'options including the mind-altering two days at the Hideout , better known as PSYCH FEST II , Pilsen's swinging duo Ornery Little Darlings at the Empty Bottle , singer-songwriter Sad Brad Smith at Schuba s and so much more. Let's get to it, shall we? FRIDAY [...]

Who knew a record about agonizing heartbreak could be so groovy? On his debut album Love Is Not What You Need , Chicago singer-songwriter Sad Brad Smith shows that not all sad songs need equally depressing music to accompany them. I like to imagine that there was a time when Sad Brad Smith was only regular Brad Smith. This "regular" period would account for the quirky, upbeat pop melodies and cheery synths that appear on Love is Not What You Need . [...]

I have a "love/hate" relationship with top ten lists. See, I love lists. But I hate the fact that "Year End Lists" are not only expected but also, for the most part, just a simple regurgitation of the same albums, blog after blog. And, what can I say? I'm kind of a snot. When something's expected, my first inclination is to rebel against it. Of course, were RFC to not toss up a single "Best Of" list, it wouldn't seem as though we were rebels, but rather that we were lazy. And my staff and I are no slouches! So, [...]
Chicago's indie pop singer-songwriter Sad Brad Smith may be best known for his tune, "Help Yourself", which made a big impression in the 2009 film Up In The Air . But 2010 has also been a big year for Smith as he's released a delightful new album, Love is Not What You Need , and more recently has been featured in the latest session from Chicago's Coach House Sounds . Now, we can add to that list Sad Brad Smith's cover of Slick Rick's classic hip [...]

There's no notice like short notice but if you're like me, you're probably spending your day trying to hatch a grand plan for your Saturday night. (Also, if you're like me, you're having Thanksgiving 2.0: The Reckoning while listening to Frontier Ruckus on repeat and trying to violently beat seasonal depression off of your back. Or is that just me?) Well, it's a good thing that us fine folks at RFC have your back and have gone out of our way to pencil in a little somethin' somethin' on your Saturday evening calender. Please [...]
I'm gonna get "FOLK TAG AT BANDCAMP" tattooed on my left forearm. All caps. I'm yelling. {From Milk and Honey } {From Cold River } {From GRZ } {From Official Bootleg #2 } {From Love Is Not What You Need }

To an extent, I realize that all RFC Thinks You Should Know columns are love letters to little known musicians. What you're about to read, however, goes one step above and beyond that. It isn't just a partial love letter but a full blown confession of sheer adoration, a chronicle of my brief but wonderful relationship with a man who goes by Sad Brad Smith . I discovered Smith when he was opening for Tristen at Schubas last month. I didn't make the show itself due [...]

It's funny to think back on things that happened a veritable lifetime ago. Whether it just feels like an actual lifetime (in my case) or it sort of, kind of was (in the case of RFC mix-day-part-one-r's case, Abby Holmes), it's a strange sensation to put yourself back in the state of mind you were in previously. Now, don't get me wrong, readers, right now? Things are kind of swell in the "hot half-life" of Amber Valentine. But not that long ago, I spent almost a full year in the "friend zone" desperately trying to make my way out of [...]
![[Album Review] Sad Brad Smith- Love is Not What You Need](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/2959226_lg.jpg)
by teepoo Sad Brad Smith is an indie-folk artist from Chicago, IL. His name sounds pretty tongue and cheek and appropriately represents the music he creates. Love is Not What You Need is a fine example of a collection of exaggerated sad songs. Tracklist 1. Sure 2. Everyone Knows 3. Get Together 4. Baby, I'm So Sad 5. Home Sweet Home 6. We Are Free 7. Bad Mood 8. [...]

A few years ago this kind of music said to be old man's music, but later while the irony era emerges the term Folk Music can be a new word for coolness, and i don't mind as long as the band can provide good messages and nice music with the fresh air from the mountain like Sad Brad Smith. Sad Brad Smith's namesake immediately establishes this crafty songsmith as a tongue-in-cheek kind of guy. While his purposefully exaggerative lyrics maintain wistful melancholy while elbowing you in the side with a wink, [...]
