I loved The Muppet Movie as a kid and re-watching it is still a magical experience. The funny thing is watching years later and seeing the bevy of celebrity cameos: Mel Brooks, Bob Hope, Steve Martin, Milton Berle, Madeline Kahn, Orson Welles(!), Richard Pryor, and more! All the cameos fly over your head as a kid except one: Big Bird! The real stars, of course, are the Muppets themselves who appear in a very meta-narrative with the Muppets gathering in a movie theatre to basically watch how the Muppets all came together and ended up in Hollywood. Another installment in Kermit the Frog's burgeoning covers career : Kermie covers one of the most heartbreaking songs I know, and one of Elliott Smith's best. Sweet jesus, though. I actually find this far more upsetting than the 'Hurt' cover (which was insane in a I-want-to-scrub-my-eyes-out way, and not necessarily something I actually liked ). Who knew that a frog could plumb the depths of addiction and attempted suicide ? Sad Kermit - Needle in the Hay [...]
He made news about this same time last years with an incendiary video for "Hurt", and this week the mad genius behind Sad Kermit dropped a new video, a cover of Elliot Smith's "Needle In The Hay", with a recreation of the Richie Tenenbaum suicide scene from The Royal Tenenbaums. Here are some mp3s of Sad Kermit singing some other sad songs. See and hear more at SadKermit.com . Creep (Radiohead) Hallelujah (Leornard Cohen/Jeff Buckley) [...]
I saw these on Stereogum and they were cracking me up, so I have to share them here. As sadkermit.com explains: Soon after the death of Jim Henson, Sad Kermit spiraled downward into a life full of addiction, romance and pain. The songs and videos on this webpage shed light on Sad Kermit's descent into his dark, hurting world. Sad Kermit doing Nine Inch Nails ' "Hurt": [...]
I figured Sad Kermit would just end with his hilarious cover of Johnny Cash (covering Trent Reznor) singing "Hurt." But he's back with a rendition of Elliott Smith's "Needle in the Hay." Strangely, Sad Kermit has also covered Radiohead, Jeff Buckley, a few other NIN songs and a few more Elliott Smith tunes. This is the only other video he's made. He even reenacts that really sad scene from the Royal Tennenbaum's where the Baumer tries to kill himself. Anyway. Pure genius whomever is making these videos [...]
I was watching CBC tonight and found this brilliant video. It's unfortunate that more hasn't been said about the sad state that everyone's good friend Kermit has been in. From his website "Soon after the death of Jim Henson, Sad Kermit the Frog turned to a life full of drugs, alcohol and sex. His fall to rock-bottom was quick and unrelenting. These songs document Sad Kermit's pain during these years...and years to come." [...]
