Christmas is arguably the only major religious holiday where non-Christians have developed yearly traditions. So whether you plan to spend the holiday with family, volunteering with an organization or, like us, at a Chinese restaurant with the Jewish homies, you'll be in good company. Face it, you could be getting barked at by the staff of the Maury Povich show, receiving a pet rat as a gift or being torn between which family to spend the day with. Cheers! Hercules and Love Affair : DJ Dregs . [...]

For the fourth consecutive year, Said the Whale has released a Christmas EP. It's only got two songs (one of which is barely a minute long), so it's really more a single. But it's free, so who's complaining? I interviewed singer Tyler Bancroft about the new EP for a brief piece in the Georgia Straight . You can pick up both tracks for free over at the band's official site . My favourite of the two is the silky "Brightest on My Street," which you can download below. With [...]

Last night, Kyprios won the Peak Performance Project . Go to Exclaim! to read my story about the finals, which also featured performances from runners-up Said the Whale and Vince Vaccaro . The weirdest part about the night was that I somehow ended up standing around for five minutes holding Said the Whale's novelty cheque for $75,000. Speaking of Said the Whale and last night (segue), here's the band's new song, "Last Night," which was released for free via the Peak's website . It [...]
Vancouver's Said The Whale have teamed with a number of local musicians, including Dan Mangan and Hannah Georgas, to produced a really funny song spoofing charity singles. Check out "We Are the Music: Musicians for (spare) Change": Said The Whale's website

This week's album review is on a fully Canadian band. I mean, comes from Canada, sings about Canada, tours in Canada, no American media can be found for them in the least. And in a reversal of trends, I am picking up on Said The Whale almost a year after second full-length album was released. (Get it, cuz Canada is always behind us? Ha ha. Yes I know, Canadian Hockey Team. Gold. 2010. Whatever. They invented the sport.) [...]

(photo:Vanessa Heins) Now this is good-for the environment ! The Malahat Revue rolled its way across British Columbia this month, featuring Hannah Georgas , Said The Whale , Jeremy Fisher and Aidan Knight . That's nothing groundbreaking, but this caravan's mode of transportation was: they toured B.C. on bicycle. They carried as much of their gear as they comfortably could themselves across 500 kilometres while a single vehicle carried the rest of the heavy gear for them. Jeremy Fisher has [...]

Here is part 2 of my times at NXNE in Toronto. These are the events that happened on Friday June 18, 2010. Its was a full day of excitement. BBQs, live music at a park and various venue hopping. This is one long post. The first stop was going to Bellwoods Trinty Park. Took me about an hour finding out where the spot is considering Bellwoods is a big park. It was a great afternoon listening to bands play their songs acoustic. The best were of [...]

by teepoo I know this topic is rather random. Feeney one of our writers here has a webcomic that focuses on the life of fish as they struggle to understand popular culture and life. HereFishieFishy has just recently moved to tumblr so go follow and reblog! As for songs, this is a rather weird topic to deal with in terms of songs. I mean how many songs about fish can you think of off the top of your head? Enjoy this random list of songs! [...]

ARTIST: The SWAG Report 008 with freebie downloads courtesy of The Dead Weather, Sloan, Said The Whale, Richard McGraw, Kylie Minogue, Fang Island and more! So much more! DATE: 05-19-10 WRITER: Don Loder Alright ya mugs, So here it is, your newest load o' stuff that my sticky little fingers could - shall we say - liberate from the greater clutches of the music business. I'm still a little amazed at how easy it is - I'm not gonna lie; what with the [...]
Said The Whale sent out an email to their mailing list today letting their fans know that there were very limited tickets left for their upcoming show with Plants and Animals on May 5th. Here is what they sent out Hey friends, For those of you in Vancouver, we just wanted to let you know that tickets [...]
Vancouver folk/roots band Said The Whale pull into Toronto for a show at the El Mocambo on Saturday night. I had the chance to speak with Tyler from the band about the concert and music in general. Here's our conversation (hopefully it properly conveys his great sense of humour): T.O. Snob: Thanks for doing this. For those who haven't seen Said The Whale live, what can they expect from your
Filed under "nostalgic summer songs", today's track is Said the Whale's Emerald Lake, AB from their 2009 sophomore full-length effort Islands Disappear. In it, we get a full sampling of what the Vancouver-based indie-rock act brings to the table, from their abilities as lyricists (see: "And I think you'll agree that? the train tracks are [...]
The Capitals Moving To Pluto Said The Whale
A couple weeks ago, the Olympic Flame passed by my house. I didn't even know it was going to, but all of a sudden, hundreds of people were lining the streets. Until that point, I had actually been rather cynical about the Olympics taking place in the Vancouver area. "As if there aren't five times too many people here already." When the flame passed, I started warming up to the idea. (Pun intended? Maybe.) While my Olympic Fever didn't register on the mercury until midway through the opening ceremonies, Canadians have been excited for a long time. And [...]

Said the Whale 's first ever release was a mostly-acoustic EP, Let's Have Sound , which was home recorded by songwriters Tyler Bancroft and Ben Worcester. The band returned to its roots for the iTunes-only EP Bear Bones , which was recorded in Worcester's bedroom, and features stripped-down instrumentation and bite-sized track lengths ("Pretty City" clocks in at under a minute). "A Song for Me" is a gorgeous love song, Worcester's guitar and voice by subtle keyboard tinkling and falsetto harmonies. Like much of the band's recent (and awesome) Islands Disappear , the tune [...]

We're back -and better than ever! I decided to start 2010 with one of my favourite Vancouver bands right now, Said The Whale . This is also one of the funniest interviews I have done. I reached Tyler Bankcroft (wearing the blue t-shirt in the middle of the sofa) on his fuzzy cellphone from the bowels of Said The Whale 's Gastown rehearsal space. He did his best to remain diplomatic when I asked him what it [...]
