I spent many a bittersweet summer down beside the multi-faceted seasides of Swansea and though I may now look back longingly over those estival months of yore, when not glued to substandard music television they were by and large spent foraging for rare treasures down Derricks Music – just about the most ramshackle independent record store imaginable. With sand between the toes and Saint Etienne on the Discman, I'd wish for any form of even faintly compelling band to come out of South Wales' second city though it's only with the emergence of The Adelines that the sepia-stained dream [...]
Upscale songs for a luxury lifestyle.

By Danielle Gibson March 14, 2013 Hackney Picture House (presented by Heavenly Films) is starting a brand new monthly night of much-loved rarely screened gems from April 4th. The opening night celebrates the tenth anniversary of Finnisterre , directed by Paul Kelly and Kieran Evans, which premiered at the Onedotzero film festival in April 2003. "The screening will be preceded by a Q&A with all three members of Saint Etienne (Bob Stanley, Pete Wiggs and [...]

Sarah Cracknell of Saint Etienne: photo by Michael Ligon Well hello blog readers. You still here? Back in October of last year, I finally got to see UK band Saint Etienne live in Toronto. Apparently the last time they'd been to town was a decade earlier. Fortunately, I'd got to check off the band off my bucket list when I saw them live in Barcelona, Spain in 2009 during the Primavera Sound Festival . The band came to town to promote their newest album "Words and Music" (which I still haven't listened [...]
Hoewel er voor de komende tijd meer dan genoeg opwindende releases op stapel staan, kan ik het niet laten om alsnog een aantal van mijn favoriete albums van het afgelopen jaar onder de aandacht te brengen. Aangezien het gros hiervan...
With a penchant for glittery nightlife and a proclivity for that most ebullient of electropop, Cali pairing Kisses couldn't be better suited to those more stark and remarkable parts of '80s-indebted synthetics. It therefore all seems pretty suitable that Jesse Kivel and Zinzi Edmundson should draft in Saint Etienne stalwarts Pete Wiggs and Tim Laracombe for what is, platitudinously speaking, the so-called difficult second album . Entitled Kids In LA , it's anticipated mid-May and, again exceedingly aptly, is to be outed via steel-smooth imprint Cascine though to revert to that which we've at our mercy, The [...]

Bugün takvim yaprakları 9 Ocak tarihini gösteriyor. Aşk'ın ve hüznün şairi Cemal Süreya’nın aramızdan ayrılışının yirmi üçüncü yılı... Ölüyorum tanrım Bu da oldu işte... Her ölüm erken ölümdür Biliyorum tanrum... Ama, ayrıca, aldığın şu hayat Fena değildir... Üstü kalsın... Can Yücel'in dediği gibi 23 yıldır aşk yok memlekette... Here’s a lovely winter’s afternoon jam from Newbridge’s Peadar Kearney . It’s daringly simple, with Kearney working with simple beat loops and melodies and little else. Yet it’s the straight edge atmosphere and narrative that’s the track’s main strength. It doesn’t want to surprise you, making its intentions clear from the outset, however with such fleeting and glistening melodies, simplicity doesn’t seam to matter. Head over to Peadar Kearney ’s soundcloud for more.

Each year I shun Christmas music like it's the plague. It begins too early, is far too repetitive, and, quite frankly, is a bit boring. That is, until this year. It began with "The Week Between", a new track off One Christmas at a Time , an LP that finds Jonathan Coulton and John Roderick (The Long Winters) collaborating for a full album of original Christmas music. My thoughts began to change. If this song can be so amazing, what about other [...]

ultimo singolo estratto dall’album di esordio The Palace Garden dei Beat Connection , uscito per Tender Age , Think/Fell viene accompagnato dalla b-side strumentale Of Showers e dalla versione remix dei Saint Etienne :

Another year, and another top 5 gigs by bands that should not be missed live. How odd that three of them came one after another, but that's the cool thing about Washington DC. Except for December through the beginning of February (the dead of winter) and June through August (festival season), there is always a reasonably good selection of bands coming through here. But that hasn't always been the case. I am often asked on my travels why I became a music blogger, and the simple answer has always been this: when I [...]

Saint Etienne have put together the nicest little remix of Beat Connections's Think/Feel . It's the smooth, happy companion supporting me through my midnight essay turmoils & for that I'm grateful. Give it a listen below:

4:30 am & can’t fall asleep. This song is keeping me good company though, the title needs no further explanation really… “Thing/Feel” is track 7 & the latest single from Beat Connection’s debut album The Palace Garden , out now via Moshi Moshi.
Part one of our end of year run down brings us a healthy dose of authentic, old school passion with a dash of modern day style. Join us for the next ten this afternoon. 50.

I've always said when compiling my year-end list that I don't choose my favourite albums of the year so much as they declare themselves to me. If it requires too much thought, it's probably more a case of trying to justify adding something that I know probably doesn't belong. But those albums that do pass muster are not, as you might think, necessarily the albums that I can't stop listening to. Rather, they're often the ones that I try to listen to the least, or at least sparingly, lest that intangible magic that I feel within its notes [...]

Temporary Residence Not many record producers manage to achieve the sort of household name status as the artists they work with, but Nigel Godrich has done as well as anyone in the recent memory. Partly because of his work on high-profile records from the likes of Beck, Pavement, and Paul McCartney, but mainly because he's the unofficial sixth member of Radiohead , having been behind the boards for every one of their records from OK Computer onwards. He's been getting out of the studio and onto the stage of late, though. [...]
