I love the time-machine effect of songs. I know that there's some scientific explanation for it, but boy when it sweeps over you and brings you to that day, those old places and textures, there's nothing like it. That's how I felt when I got an email from Saintseneca . I immediately recognized the name because there is this one song of their's, Grey Flag, off their 2010 EP release that I used to listen to all the time in San Diego, more specifically while pounding pavement along the San Diego river to get to [...]

This year's list of favorites is fairly sedate (even for me), with just a little ruckus here and there. Lots of morning-coffee music, which I guess says something about my 2011. But music's strength is its pliability. It can be whatever you need it to be at the moment, especially when we have instant access to virtually any song ever recorded, often for free . Judging by this list, I needed music to be a salve more than a release valve this year. I also never expected my favorite album to come from someone who held the [...]
If you haven't been downright impressed with the overflow of incredible genre crossing music this year you are either a huge Nickleback fan or you are Amish, there's no other logical excuse to complain about the status of music. Last year when I put the "Best Albums" list together it was one of the first [...]

PHEW! Thank fuck that's (more or less) over. This year has been a bit full-on, I have to confess, but the bulk of the hard work now seems more or less over. Our last release (Lil Daggers) came out last week, and our label Christmas Party is now done and dusted which leaves me a relatively comfortable run into the Christmas period from now on, which is some for which I am quite grateful. Nevertheless, The Leg album, the Jesus H. Foxx album and the second album by Yusuf Azak are all on the menu for early next [...]

Columbus band Saintseneca have just released their debut album, Last , which follows two EPs and four years of constant touring. And if you have never heard of them - don't feel bad, we hadn't either - then you are going to be pleasantly surprised by this acoustically torn melancholy: Acid Rain Blood Drawing

Saintseneca is a band of lifelong friends from Columbus, Ohio who write songs that move easily from tender to frenetic and back again. With pop-folk songs built on traditional, Appalachian instruments (banjos, fiddles, dulcimers, and "other forms of frontporch percussion"), Saintseneca's sound is both modern and traditional. And mesmerizing, at times... it wouldn't do to not mention that their new album - Last - is an impressive blast of hungry, vigorous, even anthemic pop-folk. It's awesome, and you should definitely follow me for more information... From Last 's opening track [...]

I moved to San Francisco from Ohio about ten years ago, and I fell in love with The Bay Area almost as soon as I arrived. Everything about the city felt special to me. On my walk to class I'd just soak in the vibe and ponder at how I had ended up here, so far from where I was born and raised. Ten years later, I still love it here. Nonetheless, I do find myself missing Ohio sometimes: family, friends and some of the rustic areas outside of the cities. Especially during the Fall months. For example, one of [...]

Historically, September has been a really good month for Kasey and me. Kasey and I got married in September 2009. I began my new job in September 2010. And this year we are putting the final touches on our very first Pairings Box! That may be why the September mixes have always been some of my best. For example, my very first mix I ever shared with our readers was in September 2009 (sorry - it is no longer available), and I think the Musical Pairings' September 2010 Mix (which is still available) has held up [...]

Tweet Saintseneca are probably Columbus, Ohio's best kept secret, having floated under the radar for a few years now impressing people one house-show at a time. They released their debut album "Last" a few weeks ago and I can only attempt to put into words how great it is to finally be able to put something tangible into peoples hands to hear what I've been raving about. Very similar in energy as The Head and The Heart with songs that easily clear [...]

MP3: Saintseneca - Acid Rain While there have been plenty of bands under the umbrella of folk doing well on the global level as of late, there seems to be one recurring problem I have with many of them: a lack of sincerity. Any band can stomp rhythmically on the ground, throw some forlorn rhetoric into their lyrics or integrate a menagerie of instrumentation into an album, but few can do it with the sincere gusto of Saintseneca. Though the four-piece have been playing house shows for four years, they only [...]
If ever there was a band custom-fitted to my tastes, it would be Saintseneca. The band hails from my home state of Ohio, employs precisely the sort of understated, folk-minded musicality that I so love, and doesn't shy away from multi-syllable words and difficult phrasing. They are a band born of the basement music culture alive and thriving in Columbus and they are, if their reputation is right, a joy to see live. I have been listening to Saintseneca and quietly awaiting a new record, biding my time until I could share what I knew was going to be a [...]
I owe an apology to everyone for slacking last week and not having a playlist up. I'm now part of the Listen Before You Buy family doing "New Music" posts and this is my first week involved with them it's something I'm excited about. Having never cared about editing or formatting and only about getting [...]

It's like The Tallest Man on Earth , Mumford and Sons and The Avett Brothers had a blissed-out, stripped-down baby. And that baby was called Saintseneca . And the baby was good. Saintseneca hails from Columbus (the Ohio version), and according to their Tumblr will "play anywhere, especially where it echoes and there's a good floor to stomp on." Which frankly just about sums up what you need to know before you press play on their debut full-length release Last . [...]

It is indeed that time of year. Well, yes, it is late December aka Christmas/New Years time. However, when most people are trimming trees, dusting off their John Denver and the Muppets Christmas albums and throwing back some egg nog, music addicts/geeks alike are perusing every "Best of 20103 list they can find on the world wide web. That being said... Two-thousand and ten was quite a whirlwind year for me. I became part of this brilliant music blog, had a crash course in promoting shows and met some pretty special people along the way. It's [...]

My Wednesday was divided into four, very distinct parts: the earliest part consisted of coffee, cigarettes, and cooking brussel sprouts (fried in bacon grease, yo) and fresh asparagus. Part A was decent enough - I'm not a cook but I made due. Spaghetti-Os at the work Thanksgiving feast I myself had organized would have been rude as fuck. Part B consisted of said dinner at work. I spend my days making money to feed others who cannot feed themselves and so, to me, it feels like we should all have a day where we sit together as a work family [...]

The worst types of posts I read on music blogs are those where the blogger whines about having some sort of other life that is not the blog and how he is just so busy/important that he couldn't possibly find time to update. At the same time it is sometimes simply unavoidable. But instead of apologizing in advance for today's lack of content, I'll share with you some MP3's I've been enjoying in hopes that you will be to distracted to notice I actually never said anything about them. MP3: Johnny Flynn - Kentucky Pill [...]

Yvynyl had posted about these guys last week some time, and I instantly took to them. They have a really honest sound, and honest lyrics, matched with their ground-stomping percussion makes for an oddly moving listening experience. This video they just posted from their time in Boston, and is one of my favorite songs of their EP "Grey Flag" which you can pick up on iTunes or their Bandcamp or order the cassett ! saintseneca : Many, many thank yous to Aviv, Rob, and Kelly for hosting [...]
