All this week, I'm (finally) going through my overstuffed inbox and sorting out the best bands that sent music my way . Though this will certainly showcase several bands who deserve greater exposure, this will mainly serve as proof that I'm pretty awful at writing music reviews. If you read these and feel that - somehow - you'd like me to check out your band for possible review, head over to the Submissions section, give it a quick read, then send a shout-out to carl@theopeningacts.com . Last month Columbus folkies Saintseneca released a 4-song 73 on Paper Brigade , and tomorrow is the official release show at Used Kids , with Letters to the Moon and Couch Forts. 6 pm. Here's a video of the band performing "Shipwrecked," which you'll find on the aformentioned slab of vinyl. If you can't make it to the show and like things digital-style, you can download the songs from iTunes or Amazon .
I wrote about this band earlier in the month . If you like Fleet Foxes you might like this band, with four vocalists and a banjo led sound they've got a similar feel to 'Foxes but you wouldn't say they sound the same. Let me know what you think. MP3: God Bones - Saintseneca

Saintseneca popped into my mailbox awhile ago. Their 73 was released Sept. 1 and I do really wish I had posted on them before that in order to help build some hype for it. But, better late than never, and I'm hoping there's some left of their limited to 300, color vinyl. Of course you can get it in digital format, if you really insist. I think you'll find their version of Americana folk to be very much in the vein of what you've heard on these pages from Scotland and other parts of the UK. It's [...]
Monday, September 21, 2009 Today's Quick Mention: It would appear that Harlem Shakes have decided to call it quits. I didn't think their most recent record was amazing or anything, but it was solid and had some really nice tracks on it. Anyone know the reason for the split? It's been a while since I've put together an EP, so I figured that was the best way to start the week. Enjoy. : Virgin Of The Birds - Spanish Accusations : If you've [...]

So this is actually a week or so late. Sorry about that. Sometimes life just gets a bit chaotic. Much like my day job...the blog never stops. It's a constant source of music and if you take a day off, it sort of snowballs into something bigger than most email in boxes can handle. That's the story of POP! Stereo...and I mean that in the best way possible, because doing this thing is too much fun. Anyway, after taking the week off, I've recovered, answered all my email, restored the Internet (you should see the vine growing up [...]

With a band name sounding like a pharmaceutical product and a genre of folk I wasn't holding out much hope for God Bones when it hit my inbox. However as the label ( Paper Brigade ) pointed out "folk" doesn't do them justice. An upbeat song with banjo and violin the band have added layers of vocals and it works well. It's a song you feel you should be able to sing along to but at the same time find it difficult. You can stream Saintseneca's whole EP at their Myspace site or download God Bones below. [...]

Editor's Note: Usually, I use Sundays to rant and rave about just about anything and I'm just as likely to discuss broad topics about music as I am my cat or wrangling at Home Depot. I've been fairly off the radar for the last couple of weeks while Brian, Rob, James, and Justin have been covering the album review duties superbly. Rob's debut review of The Ettes earlier this week was solid and we're glad to have him on board. Justin's finally getting over his Canadian hangover and Brian has officially shaken the flu. Wrap all of this together with [...]

BIO:Saintseneca is a folk band from Columbus, Ohio, but "folk" doesn't capture the passion, potential and joy in their music. The band might say they play folk songs, at least as an idiom, but the real magic behind their twangy banjo, percussive dulcimer and floating violin is the sudden symphonies of sound created with layers of voices, stomps, claps and trash cans. The arrangements within this

...with summer slowly losing its grip and the cool autumn mornings becoming a regularity, the arrival of the debut EP from Columbus quartet Saintseneca seemed like a perfect companion piece. Out on San Francisco imprint Paper Brigade , this all-too-short disc is an intimate-yet-passionate affair. While easily fitting into the chamber folk idiom, Saintseneca supplant skull-shattering volume with spirited singingalongs and stomping, resulting in a somewhat more human experience that places emphasis on substance. The disc is out in a limited edition of 300 7" vinyl, as well as a digital download. You can get all the [...]
