Thao Nguyen, Sallie Ford, and their crews brought a new kind of girl power to sell out the Troubadour last Monday night.

Photos and words by Debi Del Grande Spunky Sallie Ford brought her sassy self and The Sound Outside to the Troubadour on their final stop of the tour. I was immediately drawn to the Portland quartet with Ford's vocal chops and style, the extremely tight drumming of Ford Tennis, upright bassist Tyler Tornfelt, and Jeff Munger on guitar. It wouldn't be a proper show without the venue's disco ball as Ford noticed it and had it turned on. [...]

There's a band out on the highway, They're high steppin' into town, It's a rainbow full of sound, It's fireworks, calliopes and clowns. Everybody dancin'. C'mon children, C'mon children, Come on clap your hands. Sun went down in honey and the moon came up in wine, You know stars were spinnin' dizzy, Lord The band kept us so busy we forgot about the time. - The Music Never Stopped (Barlow/Weir) For four days the 27th annual SXSW Music Festival was the equivalent of my own living jukebox. A cacophony of sounds emanated from [...]

You made a fool of everyone… Thao and the Get Down Stay Down: We The Common “All they wanted was a villain… all they got was me.” So sings Thao Nguyen on the opening title track of her superb new album right before “The Get Down Stay Down” launch into an incredibly infectious, groove mixing banjo and handclap rhythms. From there it’s one perfectly off-kilter track after another somewhere between a swinging folk and sexytime indie rock. Some people can make an old t-shirt and ripped [...]

Sallie Ford & The Sound Outside the swinging roots rock, country, jazz, and blues band out of Portland have just unleashed their sophomore LP, Untamed Beast and are now touring for their LP. Yesterday they performed a number of sets showcasing their new songs at SXSW in Austin Tejas. According to singer Seth Avett of The Avett Brothers , Ford’s songs have that “rare quality of somehow combining fun with emotional and artistic integrity” and she “fills the room with it” and reminds him of the “energy of early rock ‘n’ roll.”
Normally, four band shows are too much to bear. However, the good folks ay Noise Pop managed to piece together a complete package that more than impressed. We got to enjoy for distinct musical projects that both complimented each other, and still remained entirely unique. We ended up enjoying 4 straight hours of great music. The censored version of the album cover. No, I'm not siding with The Man; just trying to keep Reselect SFW... Well, I'm happy to report that I've found it. ("Found what?" you must ask, patient yet slightly annoyed at such a cryptic statement.) Best Record of the Year (So Far) , that's what. Yes, the new album from Portland's Sallie Ford and the Sound Outside is one of those rare albums that clicked for me right from the first listen. One of those albums that has everything [...]
Sallie Ford And The Sound Outside released their third album, Untamed Beast (Partisan), on February 29. The vicious-yet-tame Ford has a timeless and authoritative rock 'n' roll candor, and quite the voice to back it up. The Portland, Ore., inhabitant has gifted MAGNET with a mix tape that includes some modern fuzz rock, punk from the [...]

Noise Pop 2013 - Thao and the Get Down Stay Down @ GAMH 3/2/13 - photo by Nic Buron San Francisco's semi-soloist, Kacey Johansing was joined by a quartet of jazz minded players. The arrangements had a dreamlike quality that was rooted in the ground by Johansing's confident earthen pipes. The arrangement was jazzy but the songwriting felted rooted in folk music. They created a fresh juxtaposition that felt like a natural sonic marriage. There was no gimmick to be found here. Before the Brave are a relatively new article. With [...]

I 've been in need of some good old fashioned, hip-shakin' rock n' roll to shake off all that New England snow, and now that spring is almost here I can't think of a better album to welcome back the season than Sallie Ford & The Sound Outside's latest Partisan Records release " Untamed Beast, " the Portland, OR band's follow up to their wildly successful 2011 debut album Dirty Radio. The smoky, noir guitar chords that kick off the first track "They Told Me" set the dial back a few decades [...]
