'Round this time of year, Québec revels in its modest share of lush tropical-esque weather. Lawn chairs are on the sprawl; Coronas are handy; UV rays toast the toxin-laden sweat out of bodies that took advantage of the balmy air of the night before to guzzle malted beverages like there was no tomorrow. Neo-catholic expletives blow out of mouths hither-tither and dissipate amidst the smoke of the last few King Size Export A's left. (*soupir* 'Sti qui fait chaud...) Inevitably, heat in itself is a manifestation of energy: as such, the higher concentration of energy in summer stirs [...]
Filed under: The Hit List It's become an election-season occurrence as common as kissing babies: A politician uses a popular tune as a campaign song, and a songwriter immediately sends them a cease-and-desist letter. Tom Petty [...]

Sam & Dave: You Don't Know Like I Know [ purchase ] Before Chef, before Shaft, and before his 18-minute version of "By the Time I Get to Phoenix", Isaac Hayes was half of a potent Stax songwriting/producing duo with David Porter. Soul singers Sam & Dave were the prime beneficiary of their talents, having been gifted with classics like "Hold On, I'm Comin'", "When Something is Wrong with My Baby", and most notably "Soul Man". The first hit the duo had with Hayes & Porter [...]
Filed under: The Hit List By the time they achieve stardom, most artists have plenty of people to thank -- which becomes painfully obvious during those long award acceptance speeches. But relatively few actually express gratitude through their music. Their thankful songs usually praise loved ones, deities or the "little people" -- those loyal fans whom the artists hope will express their loyalty one more time [...]
Sam & Dave - I Thank You Love the horn section. I've started listening to the radio station put on by Howard University here in DC on a somewhat regular basis. Well, days I forget my iPod and sports talk isn't doing it for me. But more often than not on my drive home from work they have these killer old school R 'n' B cuts that have retriggered my love for this style of music. Song that make you wanna just love on somebody.

Don't say that I never finish anything! I started this series on Forbes 20 most miserable US cities and the music that spawns from these cities back in March . Then life got into the way of my blogging, other things came up, and I didn't finish the list. And now that we are 3/4 of the way through 2010, the list may be irrelevant. But anyway, to refresh your memory, here are the first 16 of Forbes 20 most miserable US cities: 20. Philadelphia, [...]

Filed under: Concerts and Tours , News Douglas Mason, Getty Images After teasing the crowd about playing new stuff, Huey Lewis and the News finally gave an oldie-hungry audience what they wanted Thursday night -- and wound up stringing them along even more. During a show at the Chumash Casino in Santa Ynez, Calif., the band started out with four new songs -- actually covers of Stax records -- which will appear on an upcoming album. [...]
A southern fried Stax O'Wax Trax that sounds just as finger lickin' good today.
The best of Memphis soul!

I just can't get over losin' you And so if I seem, broken and blue Walk on by, walk on by Foolish pride, that's all that I have left Thanks to a wonderful teacher in high school, I was fortunate enough to be exposed to the entire Stax singles catalog almost immediately upon becoming interested in 60's R+B. I went from one cd, Otis Redding's Greatest Hits, Volume 2 to The Complete Stax Singles 1959-1968. I think a lot of folks can hand something this comprehensive to a [...]

This is a wonderful four song set from 'Soul Men' Sam and Dave . Although this is hardly an exclusive to Beehive Candy it is a must have for any soul music fan and worthy of a share. The audio quality is incredible considering the age of the recording. The following from wikipedia puts the whole show in context: S am & Dave's live act earned them the nickname "Double Dynamite". Phil Walden, Otis Redding's manager, said "I think Sam and Dave will probably stand the test of time as being the best live [...]

Filed under: News , Exclusive When Michael Jackson passed away earlier this year one of the most moving tributes came from Lenny Kravitz , who penned a touching memorial for Spinner. It got us wondering about some of Kravitz's other musical heroes. The range is as diverse as fans of the singer would expect. "As you read in the Michael Jackson thing, I wouldn't be sitting here talking to you now if it wasn't for Michael Jackson, the Jackson 5 , Berry [...]

Filed under: Concerts and Tours , News When the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame 25th Anniversary shows were announced earlier this summer, even the most jaded music fan had to be excited by the prospect of seeing Bruce Springsteen , Paul Simon -- both solo and with Art Garfunkel -- Stevie Wonder and Crosby, Stills, and Nash on the same bill. But Thursday night's concert at Madison Square Garden, the first of the two shows, delivered even more. [...]

Filed under: Concerts and Tours , News , Exclusive As part of next week's massive Rock and Roll Hall of Fame 25th Anniversary shows at New York City's Madison Square Garden, there are going to be a lot of special pairings -- Metallica with Ozzy Osbourne , Stevie Wonder and B.B. King , and Aretha Franklin joined by Lenny Kravitz and Annie Lennox . When Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band hit the [...]

It's hard to believe that Otis Redding was only 26 when his plane crashed into Lake Monona on Dec. 10, 1967-26. Just a kid. You watch that old concert footage and there was this smartly dressed, larger-than-life man whose soul poured out in buckets of sweat. And that voice-it could pierce your heart or rip your head off ... both good things, of course, only in the analogical sense. The Best: See & Hear is the umpteenth collection dedicated to Redding-a two-disc CD/DVD of his songs as well as [...]

Sam & Dave - Wrap It Up ( buy ) If you had to pick the grooviest song by dynamite Stax soul duo Sam & Dave, what would be your poison? Soothe Me , Soul Man , I Take What I Want maybe? I Can´t Stand Up For Falling Down perhaps, You Got Me Hummin´ , or I Thank You ? It´s a tough one, but - maybe because of the infectious horns - I´d [...]

As I was finishing yesterday's Replacements post, a blip came over my Twitter feed that Jim Dickinson had passed away. I thought, "no that can't be the same Jim Dickinson that I just wrote about." But unfortunately, it was. Here is the Associated Press article on Dickinson's life via Yahoo news . Memphis producer, musician Jim Dickinson dies By CHRIS TALBOTT, Associated Press Writer [...]
