NONA (Deluxe Version) by Sam Means Nona is a new EP from the indie-pop group Sam Means. Just shy of 15 minutes, Nona doesn't overstay it's welcome. It's reasonably mild album, it sets a lighthearted pop rock tone, and sticks with it. It could use to be a little more varied, however, this will certainly serve its purpose to introduce people to the sound that Sam Means is going for. This collection reminds me quite a bit of the Cold War Kids EP Up in Rags . The production (namely the very game [...]

It's kind of embarrassing to admit that, after listening to Sam Means' cover of "I Will" – recorded straight to his cell phone – my greatest accomplishment on the iPhone for the day was playing another game of Words With Friends. This is the first song of what Means (formerly of the Format ) is calling a "potential series," cleverly titled Live From My Cell Phone . "Partly because the songs are recorded straight into the FourTrack Recorder app on my iPhone 4S, but mostly as a cheap attempt to hide the fact [...]
![[Listen] – Baby Island – "Snow"](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/4145770_lg.jpg)
Set phasers to chill. From the moment you hit play on Baby Island 's self-titled album things start relaxing and for the following twenty-five minutes they never once let up. The closing track " Snow " is my favorite thus far. Every element that stood out in previous songs is present in a much more cognitive manner; Eli Moore 's absolutely killer baselines and floating honest lyrics, Nick Dubesa riding the drums with subtle changes to avoid monotony, Mark Buzard 's lead which sweeps in making life feel positive and on track, [...]

And the parade continues... I forget how much fun I had making these. Blogophilia 11 was released in September 2009. If you've been following along, you should have noticed that I am deep in my "Intro" phase for mixes. I am not sure why I stopped that. Maybe that's something to consider for next mix. The highlights for #11 are All the Kings Men by Wild Beasts and Sleep All Summer by The National and Saint Vincent . I apologize for putting the Pete Yorn tune on [...]
There is nothing i enjoy more than meeting up with friends at dusk and heading out on a late night drive through the country. Conversations are better, time feels like it doesn't exist, the world feels like it's full of possibilities, and the stress of day to day monotony are forgotten completely. It's the only place i truly feel free, where i finally believe that anything can happen, where my friends and I strip away all pretensions and feel truly alive. Before heading out there are a few necessities that must never be overlooked; Redbull (or your choice [...]
Sam Means - Yeah Yeah Buy US: Buy UK:

This one took some to come together. Hope it taste good.... 1 . Geographer-Kites For some reason i kept thinking this was geologist instead of geographer, once that confusion was cleared up i was able to actually enjoy this one. Not to say that had weitz put it out it would have been any less than good but i'm not sure my brain [...]

Last night I was watching the Oscars, eating homemade fajitas, and mercilessly critiquing everyone from our comfy couch perch (oh, and Trent Reznor ? Winning an Oscar ? ..add that to the list of things I never thought I'd see when I was 16 and rebelling by listening to Pretty Hate Machine loudly on cassette in my 1987 Nissan Sentra). Suddenly, amidst the self-congratulating by Hollywood for itself and victorious weeping, my ears perked up from a song in a commercial that sang charmingly about a little bit of love and a little bit of [...]

I love indie films. On my Netflix queue you'll rarely see an independent movie receive anything less than four stars, even if its a solid three star movie. As cliche as these descriptions are, I love quirky, off-beat, and different. My latest indie favorite is The Sinking of Santa Isabel. The ...

What could have been? The Past: We could speak of The Format in the present tense. We could eagerly await a new release, a concert, or perhaps just knowing Nate and Sam were out there making music was enough. You can't live your life kicking yourself about missed opportunities or wondering what might have been had things played out differently. Dwelling on the past is toxic. The Present: Nate and Sam are still making music. Although it might not be together, its still great. Lets celebrate that. We've talked often [...]

Back in September, Sam Means —formerly half of beloved Arizona pop group The Format —returned to releasing records with a soundtrack for the independent comedy The Sinking of Santa Isabel . From the trailer , the film looks like it could have its moments—more or less a fable about avoiding growing up where one adult character literally lives in a tree house. With a nod to Josh Ritter's great "Wait For Love" in the trailer and 26 original hook-filled tracks by Means, you have to at least respect the director's musical taste. [...]

The Format's Sam Means and Nate Ruess still continuing to make music individually fun. - At Least I'm Not As Sad (As I Used to Be) Sam Means - Yeah Yeah Covers of songs we love that pay tribute to the original rather than extracting its guts with a polished spoon and eating them raw Little My - New Slang (The Shins cover) Bubbly Spanish songs so cute you want to stick a pen in your eye [...]
![[MP3] new Sam Means: "Yeah Yeah"](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/2009542_lg.jpg)
Music fans undoubtedly miss The Format , the duo of Sam Means and Nate Ruess were indie rock's own version of a modern day Simon & Garfunkel . The comparison is not to discredit the fantastic trademark vocals of Garfunkel or Ruess, rather accentuate the strong songwriting abilities of both Simon and Means. With Nate continuing his plunge into pop with new band Fun , it left me wondering if soft-spoken Sam would continue onward with another outfit as well. It turns out Sam Means is [...]

Sam Means, one half of our favorite (now-defunct) duo, The Format (the other half being Nate Ruess of fun. ,) is set to release his soundtrack to The Sinking of Santa Isabel , an indie comedy from last year, on September 29. Lucky for us, SPIN is providing a free download from the album , so dive in! If you're looking for a highly poppy experience, a la The Format, then you should probably change your expectations as Means tones it down (majorly) on this track, titled "Yeah Yeah." [image [...]
