I might have to quit 'The News' for a while...again. It becomes overwhelming having to dissect agendized narratives, half truths, and outright lies packaged as facts and information just to end up feeling mentally and emotionally defeated on a daily basis. But I refuse to just pick a side because it's easy. Unless that side is burning it all down and starting over . "Of course it’s exhausting, having to reason all the time in a universe which wasn’t meant to be reasonable." — Kurt Vonnegut Fingerbanger 1 : Luna [...]
Josh Rouse is trying to convince himself that his 2006 relocation to Spain didn’t completely alienate his American fan base. It hasn’t, really. But he can’t deny that life overseas has done a number on him. A failed first marriage prompted Rouse’s move from Nashville to Spain, where a relationship with artist Paz Suay has [...]

Tim Sutton’s debut feature, likened to films by Gus Van Sant and Pedro Costa, follows a laconic teenager (Max) who moves from an idyllic lakeside town to his father’s home in arid suburban Arizona. With mesmerizing imagery of hot summer bike rides and cool lake-bound dives, Pavilion captures the ephemerality and reverie of youth and the fragility of adolescent friendships. A haunting score by the Sea and Cake ’s Sam Prekop shadows the storyline, echoing its secrets and shouldering its mysteries. PAVILION from v r on Vimeo . [...]
Just 24 hours ago, I stumbled down Pentonville Road in dwindling sunshine; today, the streets about Kings Cross are spattered with a grim drizzle. Though irrespective of the downturn in the weather, the self-professed, suited and booted DruMachine hammers away, sticks flying in the sheeting mist. It's therefore testament to the brute force of the irrefutably inimitable John McEntire that, even though this most adept of percussionists does exactly what it says if not on the tin, then on his drenched kick drum he is only the second best of the two seen rhythmically expressing themselves on the night. [...]

The Sea and Cake: Runner - The Sea and Cake make it easy to revel in their simplistic nature. They are masters at utilizing serene and sometimes even tranquil melodies. Even their more rhythmic songs, like ‘Skyscraper,’ have an element of somberness about them. They even channel the essence of Simon and Garfunkel , especially apparent in ‘Harbor Bridges.’ Together since the 90s, Runner is The Sea and Cake’s tenth record, and the first since 2008. The quality of Sam Prekop’s vocals is exposed and unaffected, bringing an effervescent presence to even the most discernable [...]

[Photos by acidjack] A Sam Prekop show changed my life. I was nineteen years old, set up to record in the center of a tiny venue in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. Halfway through the set, a guy came up to me who turned out to be my college newspapers music editor. Impressed that I was one of only two people from our school (not UNC) who bothered to come to see acts like this (Sam was touring behind his self-titled 1999 solo debut), he more or less offered me the job. My relationship with music, and [...]
shrimp boat formed in 87, and at the time of their formation i was 13, and they were just a little bit ahead of my musical tastes at that point. shit i was still in kind of a heavy metal/hair metal stage at that point. although, my tastes were definitely turning/evolving into what they are today. either way, their 1993 record and final release, cavale, really hit the spot with 19 year old me. for those that dont know, shrimp boat was made up of what was pretty much chicago royalty, at the time, sam prekop, brad wood, eric claridge, [...]

Still from Radio Unnamable As previously mentioned, the 2012 BAMcinemaFEST kicks off tonight (6/20) with a screening of Mike Birbiglia's Sleepwalk with Me . This year's fest includes 22 features with 20 of those being New York premieres and, as usual, there are a few music-related films as well. On June 26 they'll screen Radio Unnamable , a documentary about WBAI DJ Bob Fass, "the father of freeform [...]

Several years removed from their '90s indie rock flag-bearing days, it's nice that Sea and Cake frontdude Sam Prekop can still provide a perfect soundtrack for a hot summer spaceout. Like a palm leaf fanning you as the sun pulls up the water from a cool pool dip, this tune holds attention for exactly the short time it needs to and then politely recedes into the blue sky. And you bask in day's drift the until the calendar reclaims your time. Sam Prekop - The Company

Sam Prekop, Chicago musical treasure and The Sea and Cake front man, recently recorded some original music for Brooklyn-based Tim Sutton’s debut feature-film, Pavilion . The film, which will be screening at SXSW under the prestigious “Emerging Visions” banner this month, tells of Max, a dislocated fifteen-year old who’s left his lakeside home for the sun-soaked suburbs of Arizona to live with his father. His summer days – if the film’s short, relatively silent trailer is any indication – are simultaneously sweet, melancholic, seemingly endless. “The Eve” and “Arizona,” both of which [...]

Photo by Megan Holmes, image from Thrill Jockey. As someone who is unacquainted with The Sea and Cake’s previous output (and there has been a lot since their formation in the mid ‘90s), and whose first impression of them was listening to their 6-track LP, Moonlight Butterfly , my best description of their sound is: an extremely distant derivative of the repetitive art rock of the ‘60s and ‘70s, namely that written by bands like King Crimson, (specifically the songs “Discipline” and “Three of a Perfect Pair”). S and C seem also like a smoothed [...]

[Photos courtesy of Patrick Proctor at Hippies Are Dead ] "We feel like we're in the Deep South," said The Sea and Cake 's Sam Prekop somewhere mid-set at the Bowery Ballroom this Tuesday. "And that's a compliment." No doubt Sam was referring to the level of enthusiasm from this weeknight crowd, including at least one audience member who seemed to think it was a Motley Crue concert. To hear a girl screaming "Bring the fuckin' heat!" in between songs at an almost professorially mild-mannered, jazz-influenced Chicago indie act was certainly a new one [...]
