Over the last few months I've posted quite a few notices of Album Releases spread across April, May, and June. Here's a re-cap for your pre/late ordering pleasure all in one convenient place: April 6th/ Dr. Dog - Shame, Shame buy: [ CD ][ Vinyl ][ Digital ] I only recently became a Dr. Dog fan, but since I finally gave their 2008 album Fate [...]

Nothing "new" from me today, still recovering from vacation, but I do have a couple of recommendations for you. 1. There's a newish blog called Beat Surrender that is featuring some of the songs from the new covers record from Mark Erelli and Jeffrey Focault called Seven Curses . It's a nice review as well as a good place to sample the new record. Here's the post in question. And a song from the record: Tom Merritt 2. I've [...]

I told you the new music was pouring in. After months of waiting, Sam Quinn - formerly of The Everybodyfields - has released definite album details for his first solo album. The Fake That Sunk A Thousand Ships is set to hit shelves and inboxes May 11th through Ramseur Records. Sam says that the album was written to help himself get through some recent personal stuff - "a real bad year in [his] life." Knowing this, I expect the album to be a slower, melodic piece of folk music. Not [...]

Sam Quinn is set to release his first solo album, The Fake That Sank 1,000 Ships , on May 11th via Ramseur Records (a HearYa label fav). We are digesting a promo copy of the album as we speak and it's a devastatingly beautiful batch of sad songs. Quinn Put it best: "Pop songs are chemically engineered to make you feel great. These ones take a slightly different approach.” Woody and I exchanged IM's about the album and it went something like this: Woody: Did you listen [...]

Somewhere in America this week, 20-year old Taylor Swift, in short dress, boots and blonde locks celebrated being Billboard’s top selling album of 2009. Friday night, Jill Andrews , in short dress, boots and blonde locks took the stage. Both women wield a guitar and a claim on country. Swift, the high fructose version forced upon us by commercialized production powers-that-be, tastes good and hooks you but slowly numbs your organs. Andrews, a natural organic nectar grown on farm soil and available sparingly, both heals and satisfies. We’ll take the latter any day. [...]

Sequins, banjos, gold satin, fiddles, brown polyester, cat-eyed glasses, stand-up bass: which of these things just don’t belong here? There are some things you can count on at a Sam Quinn show: a thin Quinn taking the stage, wearing brown pants and sporting wily hair (facial or otherwise). This frigid North Carolina night, Quinn delivered and his company gave the crowd much more than they bargained for: a green sequin caped banjo playing man and a young librarian-looking, jazz lady. Ladies and Gentleman of Charlotte, welcome to the New South. This ain’t your grandpa’s night out to hear [...]
When measured against the summer festival juggernauts (i.e., Bonnaroo, Lollapolooza, Outside Lands, Austin City Limits), Pickathon may appear unassuming in comparison. But, as William Shakespeare once said: "Though she be but little, she is fierce" (ol' Bill said that, right?). For Pickathon, roots music rules all, and the festival planners have picked some truly excellent acts to represent the time-honored genre. More festival details, lineup, and a whole bunch of MP3s after the jump. The 2009 Pickathon Festival is set to take place July 31st - August 2nd at [...]
