Been a while since I've put up a Friday Finds, and since I've got too much music on my hands and not enough time to write anything substantive about it (and anyway most people just want music, and a lot of it) so here you go. Lots of gems on this one. Caravan - Silver Strings Sonny And The Sunsets - Too Young To Burn Beautiful Swimmers - Swimmers Groove (final) [...]

Sam Amidon hat gerade sein Album ‘I See The Sign’ für März angekündigt und tauscht den Song “How Come That Blood” gegen E-Mail Adresse. Mehr dazu im entsprechenden Post bei WhiteTapes. MP3: [...]
Enjoy a selection from last week's stunning performance in the clip below. MP3: Owen Pallett - The Power Of Love

It's been a little quiet recently because, as I explained on the Monday post, I have been down in London for the last few days. Whilst there I took my parents to see Nico Muhly at the Roundhouse. Nico Muhly is apparently something of a bright young thing as far as the world of classical music is concerned, and of course with my rather less than encylopaedic knowledge of that particular field of music, I am no position to argue. He was certainly a charming compere for the evening, and came across as a genuinely [...]
There seems to have been a plethora of tunes that have caught hold of our ears and not let go over the past few days and weeks. Here for your listening pleasure are some of them. We're short of time for one reason and another so have been a bit lazy and nicked the press release copy where it actually seems to fit with the music! No matter - four beauties for you today.First up, Jason Boesel’s

What follows is four pages of my personal picks for artists I'm looking forward to hearing much more of in 2010. Featured artists include RUBIK, Baby Monster, I Am the Cosmos, Two Door Cinema Club, May 68, Sam Amidon, O Emperor, Manus Goan, Jay Electronica, MNDR, Surfer Blood, Lonelady, a host of Box Social-related artists and more. Enjoy. 1. Sleigh Bells Practically unheard of before CMJ in October last year, Derek Miller and Alexis Krauss' punky take on lo-fi dance-rock made an impression with many at [...]

I never really know what to do with pre-release mp3 teaser thingies on this site. I don't like just slapping them up on the blog without any thought, as a great many mp3 bloggers do. It seems a bit of a waste of my time, and bit... well, a bit thoughtless I suppose. As if suddenly the site would become a mindless news aggregator, which is not really fair, but it does feel a bit like that. So I decided a little while back that I would use the podcasts for popping in new mp3s I had been [...]
American Wake was a 2004 independent film about a small, mostly Irish-American community in Boston. The film featured a cast of unknowns (including folk musician Sam Amidon) and a beautiful soundtrack by Amidon's band Assembly and Seamus Egan of Solas , who has a brief cameo. Seamus Egan's lovely music, which features vocals by Antje Duvekot , is what really carries film. The score and the pretty Boston scenery create a warm, comfortable atmosphere. While the main focus of [...]

It's freezing outside and (just slightly) covered in snow (about half an inch) so naturally the entire nation has ceased to function. Erm, okay, it really isn't that cold and the snow really isn't that big a deal in all honesty but of course given the worst weather conditions we usually have to deal with are constant and life-sapping drizzle it seems that it's all come as a bit of a shock to the nation as a whole. We live in a city by the sea of course, which means that we never get the sunshine which is [...]

King Post Kitsch I really meant to post this ages agao, but in the clutter that is my mind it got buried under something useless, so please accept my belated apologies for not sharing this with you a fair bit sooner. KPK has posted a free download of his debut EP over at their Bandcamp page. I have been listening to this a fair bit this week, I hope you'll like it too. Beerjacket Another week and another Beerjacket freebie, Peter Kelly is one helluva kid fella, this weeks [...]

Pearl Harbor : "Luv Goon" - What is it about simply strummed chords, washed-out female vocals, and simple drum patterns that is so infinitely appealing? I guess it's the beauty of something so uncomplicated and accessible that makes it so hard to dislike. This is not meant as slight to the two west-coast sisters named Piper and Skylar who play under the moniker Pearl Harbor. After almost 14 years of being in bands, we can say hands down that making a simple and pleasing song is one of the hardest things to do in music. [...]

Kokeellisempaa folk-musiikkia tekevän Sam Amidonin neljäs albumi I See The Sign (ilm. 1.3.2010) koostuu pääosin traditionaalisista, tekijänoikeuksista vapaista kappaleista, jotka Amidon on sovittanut uudelleen. Poikkeuksen tästä tekee cover R. Kellyn julkaisemattomasta biisistä Relief . Amidonin tukena levyllä ovat olleet mm. Beth Orton, Nico Muhly, Shahzad Ismaily ja Valgeir Sigurðsson. Kappaleet: How Come That Blood (mp3 via Pitchfork) Way Go Lily You Better Mind I See the Sign Johanna the Row-di Pretty Fair Damsel [...]

11. Meursault - Love or Limb This is almost a bloody country song, and fucking hell it's miserable. Like the rest of Nothing Broke, the songs really don't seem to belong together, but they really do fit amazingly well. And one of the nicest things about this song, for someone actually involved with the release, is that it came as a total surprise - I knew nothing about it until suddenly there it was on something we were releasing. 12. Yusuf Azak - The Key Underground Yusuf is [...]
It's pretty incredible to think that the holiday season is here. It seems like just yesterday we were ringing in 2009, a year, which as we eventually discovered, would be beyond our wildest imaginations. From the scorching musical brilliance of Bonnaroo to the incredible weekend that was Lollapalooza ; from our interviews with Tom Jones , Slayer , Passion Pit , Pavement , Ben Kweller , and Ms. Consequence of Sound herself, Regina Spektor , to debates over the metal heads , 311 , and Albums [...]

Some artists start off good and then hit a rough patch, however Sam Amidon is the exception to most rules, he gets better and better with each album. I See the Sign will be his fourth album, and comes out on March 1st, 2010. It's an album of traditional folkie tunes, and even includes a duet with Neko Case. Nice! You can also sample an mp3 of the opener 'How Come that Blood' below. Tracklist: 01 How Come That Blood 02 Way Go Lily 03 You Better Mind 04 I See the Sign 05 Johanna the [...]
Last year, the Big Ears Music Festival raised eyebrows after rounding up the likes of Antony and the Johnsons, Negativland, Matmos, and Dan Deacon and bringing them to Knoxville, Tennessee for its inaugural incarnation. Building on that success, organizers behind the three-day festival have returned for 2010 with an even more mind-numbing lineup. After all, Vampire Weekend, Joanna Newsom, St. Vincent, and The xx will head the second annual Big Ears, set to take place from March 26-28 in downtown Knoxville. Also set to appear are Andrew W.K., The Ex, My Brightest Diamond, DJ/Rupture (both in [...]

I know I promised the Notcraigcast last week, but it didn't happen I'm afraid. After last week's amazing Craigcast Neil and I were intending to introduce Craig to all sorts of modern music which we thought continued some of the traditions of the blues music he was describing to us, but circumstances have rather conspired against us unfortunately. Neil is off on tour with Meursault playing his songs, and Craig is off on tour with his liver, taking it around the watering holes of Edinburgh and giving it a good, hard kicking in each one. Consequently [...]

Taxi, Taxi! - Belle Erik Levander - Sekund Samamidon - Saro The Last Dinosaur - Gusts of Wind Blowing in Different Directions Arcade Fire - Accidents Blue Roses - I Am Leaving Auld Lang Syne - Where My Fortune Lies Some of my favourite songs for my favourite season. 'Gusts of Wind...' is taken from The Last Dinosaur's debut, which I am enjoying at the moment, and on which I have more to say. 'I Am Leaving' [...]
