Recently I found myself outside the Sputnik in Denver staring down a double-edged challenge: one of my friends and his sister (close sibs) rode a vintage Schwinn tandem bike to the Langhorne Slim/Young Coyotes show [ nice review here ]. I've never rode a tandem anything before, and thought I'd give it a whirl. Let. Me. Tell. You . That business is not as easy as it may look. Who invented that? Why did they think it would be a good idea to make [...]
It takes a debut with a captivating vantage to introduce yourself by flooding the singles charts and magazine articles. As an Artist of the Week for Paste and a member of the CMJ Top 100 list in July, Samantha Crain has exploded onto the independent folk scene with an emphatic EP, The Confiscate , now available on Ramseur Records (The Avett Brothers, everybodyfields). But who is Samantha Crain? A 21-year-old from Shawnee, Oklahoma, Crain embodies grounded roots music and Southern charm with The Confiscate , a five-song "musical [...]

Focusing on one artist today for New Digs . This one deserves a full post. Samantha Crain is the newest addition to the stellar lineup that Ramseur Records is amassing. Ramseur reached even farther West this time - all the way to rustic Shawnee, OK. Samantha is just 21, but writes and sings with the conviction of an old-soul. Maybe it's the Choctaw heritage or maybe it's that long line of Oklahoma folkies that precede her, but Samantha's tales of sorrow, tinged [...]

You may have noticed that the image above is a bit better than pictures of past live sessions . There's a good reason for that. We forgot to take one. See that one on the right over there? We didn't take that one either. I considered pulling out the old Crayola's to create an artistic portrait of Samantha, a la Daytrotter , but thought better of insulting the band by representing them as stick figures. Samantha Crain and the Midnight Shivers home brew their Americana sound in Shawnee, Oklahoma, which seems fitting. The town's growth in [...]
Lookee here at this week's new artist parade: The Bridges For those who like : Matthew Sweet, The Lemonheads We have a real family affair here with this sisters-brother-cousin act. Their debut full-length Limits of the Sky was produced by the master of hooks himself, Matthew Sweet. www.myspace.com/thebridgesmusi c [...]
Recovering from the first night of DFest 2008 was tough. But the enjoyment of the second night was definitely worth it. 7pm - Rainbows Are Free @ R.U.R. Stage A virtual collection of local rock all-stars, RAF kicked off the night with a loud and psychedelic set - and they sounded great on the outdoor stage's sound system. Members of The Starkweather Boys, The Non, Gravity Propulsion System, Colourmusic and The Oh Johnny! Girls braved the [...]

In our attempt to gear up for DFest , I (Graham Lee Brewer) will be speaking with a few Oklahoma acts who will be playing this weekend in Tulsa. At the young age of 21, Samantha Crain has already seen this country many times over through the eyes of a touring musician. Listening to her graceful voice and introspective lyricism you wouldn't even consider age however. Hailing from the Midwestern obscurity of Shawnee, tucked away in the viscous plains of our great state Samantha worked her way to a larger audience [...]

Samantha Crain releases her Ramseur Records debut EP, The Confiscation , today. Be sure to pick up a copy of the album at Miles of Music or Amazon . The album was produced by Joey Lemon of the Chicago-based band, Berry . Listening, I like to believe that the young singer/songwriter has managed to escape the TV and technology traps and influence that preoccupies her peers. Her songs have a timeless shimmer, as if mined from the imagination between pages, not the glaring reality [...]

DC is giving away all sorts of goodies on The Waiting Room this week. In fact, he's giving away all sorts of things that I would rather like to win myself, bar a couple of things which I have already. I was supposed to write this last week, but given it appears I have some sort of Black Belt in Fuckwittery, I managed to miss it by a week. Idiot. Anyhow, all you have to do is listen to last week's episode and email DC with the weight, pounds or kilos, [...]

samantha crain 's new musical novella, the confiscation ep, collects five folk songs that despite containing distinct narratives flow without hitch or hiccup into, and build off of, one another in satisfying ways. more like a collection of thematically-linked short stories than a novella - suppose that doesn't have quite the same ring to it, though, eh? - but no poorer in depth or resonance for the distinction. here's the album opener and our current favorite, "the river," an old-fashioned and earthy sounding tale bathed in tropes spiritual and redemptive and folk. [...]

Samantha first got in touch with us when we posted her friends Theodore, and we've just found out that she's been signed with Ramseur Records, home of the mighty Avett Brothers and The Everybodyfields. How's about that for a Lonesome pedigree, then? And it's a proper pleasure to share this with you. Samantha Crain and the Midnight Shivers make a lovely noise, but don't be fooled by the melodic folk sway, there are spiky things indeed going on underneath. Sadly, can't buy it yet, but keep your eyes peeled for an EP in the [...]
Samantha Crain and the Midnight Shivers has teamed up with indie label Ramseur Records . Their upcoming release, Confiscation EP (produced by Berry 's Joey Lemon), will be released on Ramseur Records this summer. Ramseur's roster includes The Avett Brothers , The Everybodyfields and Bombadil . DOWNLOAD: Samantha Crain - "Bananafish"

Oklahoma based old soul, Samantha Crain , has recently aligned with Ramseur Records (snug home of The Everybodyfields and The Avett Brothers ). A uniting of traditional folk and modern Americana, Crain and her band, The Midnight Shivers, waltz into a bigger indie pool with the means to make old themes new and new ideas classic. Keep up with her MySpace for east coast shows, which my wishful thinking says are coming up in the near future. The River [...]
