Onra - Anthem 2 posts, 1 day?? what? been awhile huh? gotta make up for lost time haha. Anyways, everyone please stop and take a moment to appreciate this man. I have found a new hapa crush. First discovered through him excellence in musicianship, then finding out he is my "type" of man just has made this week full of bliss for me. He is beyond talented and making a name for himself through his beats. Oh yes, his hapa mix is half korean half french. so back off ladies ;p well we all know [...]
Click image to download full album Sounds like: J Dilla, Madlib, Samiyam "Dayggs - Something To Creez To" What's so good? First, let it be known that Dayggs is only 20 years old. The fact that a beat maker is constructing the flavor of instrumentals at such a young age tells a lot about this kid. He was influenced to make music after hearing albums [...]
Click image to download full album Sounds like: Freestyle Fellowship, Edan, Madlib "Blu - Spring Winter Summer Fall" What's so good? Myth building is never a tidy endeavor. The process can be messy, offensive, inconvenient, impractical and strange. But a myth can maintain longer and stronger than anything tangible. What the fuck does that have to do with anything? Well, it has everything to [...]
Click image to download full album Sounds like: The Beach Boys, J Dilla, Knxwledge "Bullion - You Still Believe In Dee" What's so good? Recently, I went to a so called hip-hop night at a club, where the said DJ had heard of neither J Dilla nor A Tribe Called Quest. To me, this was like a pop/rock DJ admitting he's never heard of The [...]

Yesterday we woke up to the heartbreaking news that PIAS' London warehouse had been completely burnt down in a wave of wanton, vitriolic rioting that was completely lacking any legitimate political motive. Whilst the wider implications of this thoughtless and respectless behaviour is a problem probably best left to our inept politicians, it has become clear that many of the independent labels that we love are now under severe financial pressure, having had some or all of their physical stock destroyed. Unfortunately for these companies, being insured is not enough. First of all, insurance companies are bastards. That [...]

[RSS Readers: See post to listen to audio] It's an all beat post! these 4 musicians i've loved and have all been suggested to me atleast once this week(it's only Wednesday) so I put them all together in a more focused sounding playlist. Machinedrum put together a very cohesive album for Planet Mu , it came at a great time and the style is back to what I feel like Travis has loved since I first met him years ago, HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. Ann Arbor hometown hero / Flying Lotus ' [...]
Brainfeeder @ BBC Radio 1 Ok this is pretty dope. Originally broadcast in January of this year, Brainfeeder took over the Benji B BBC Radio 1 show here in the UK. With hosts Flying Lotus and The Gaslamp Killer, it takes you through a selection of the Brainfeeder library, including sets by Tokimonsta and Flying Lotus plus a couple of live jams which are pretty damn fun to listen to. This is really cool way to let people know about the Brainfeeder label (which is why I'm putting it up, I only just found it, wish [...]
The LA-based label/collective Brainfeeder - helmed by beat wizard Steven Ellison aka Flying Lotus - have built up one of the more formidable rosters 2011 has to offer. So far we've had excellent releases from Tokimonsta, Matthewdavid, Mono/Poly, Jeremiah Jae and Taylor McFerrin, with heavily-anticipated records still to come from jazz-influenced prodigy Thundercat and freshly-signed dubstep figurehead Martyn. Characterised by a wide diversity of styles and a forward-thinking approach (Ellison himself completely overhauled his signature sound for last year's dazzling Cosmogramma ), the label has come a long way since its first official release, which was Samiyam's Rap [...]

If you don't know who Dennis Coffey is, do yourself a favor and consult the world's most accurate online encyclopedia . The Detroit-born musician was part of the Funk Brothers during Motown's heyday before starting [...]

Samiyam - Sam Baker's Album Brainfeeder: 2011 Sam Baker's Album is a Frankenstein like creation—hip-hop instrumentals, poorly stitched together, then filled with an ample amount of electricity. Samiyam created a monster that is mostly bullet proof and adaptable, with sharp teeth and a hand full of candy. Candy of course, to attract up and coming rappers flocking to the LA scene. Like those who came before, Samiyam moved to Los Angeles just 5 years ago, leaving An Arbor, Michigan to pursue hip hop production. Now [...]

I whip my hair back and forth. Not because I am a teenage girl (although I sometimes act like one) but because there is a party. No, it's not in my pants. This party is in my ears, and soon it will be in yours as well. I am pleased to present to you The Indie Sabbath - more refreshing than an ice-cold soda in the middle of the desert. For me, music is the purest form of communication this world has to offer. I think I should have no other mortal wants, if I could always have plenty of music. [...]

Another month, another Brainfeeder release. Please note: this is not a bad thing . We're witnessing the golden era of a genre-defining record-label. I just hope we don't start taking them for granted. Samiyam - Sam Baker's Album Samiyam returns with his highly anticipated long-player, [...]
On Sam Baker's Album , Samiyam pulls together some pretty great grooves and sounds. My problem is not much of it moves or develops into anything interesting. This release is more like a sampler of various atmospheres this L.A. producer can create, and that's fine. Maybe it'll appeal more to beatmeisters and those who go into this LP looking for that kind of experience. WATCH THE REVIEW

Illustration by Steven Fiche Download Samiyam "Cushion" (from Sam Baker's Album out now on Brainfeeder ) Sam Baker's Album is 17 funk-fueled tracks with a classic hip-hop backbone densely packed into a quick 40 minutes. This is Sam's second full length—the first was Rap Beats Vol. 1, self-distributed via his Myspace page up until FlyLo made it his first release on Brainfeeder—and while he still brings Donuts with sprinkles and the beats broken off from video [...]
