You know who owns you for the front half of Memorial Day weekend -- and will be largely responsible for your inability to do anything the second half -- assuming you are unable to escape the gravitational pull of the greater Boston/Cambridge/Somerville triangle? No, not this guy . Radio in Somerville, that's who. Starting on Thursday (and we're assuming you are still banned for life from River Gods, because, you know, this ), the new-ish little club that could is just killing it with non-stop rock 'n roll. It all kicks off with an evening of [...]

Folks in Boston may well be familiar with Girls Guns & Glory as the band have won a numbers of local music awards, two-time winners of Roots Act of Year (Boston Phoenix Awards) and Americana Act of the Year (Boston Music Awards) as well as outright winners of Act of the Year (Boston Music Awards), for me they are a new ‘discovery’ and one I initially misread (book, judge, cover) from the CD artwork I was expecting an amped up raucous rock ‘n’ roll record (which I would of loved of course) but what we actually have here is wonderful [...]

Boston noise-rock stalwart Eldridge Rodriguez ' fourth solo effort, separate and apart from his work with local titans The Beatings . This full-length was written during and around the sessions for The Beatings ' superlative 2009 effort Late Season Kids , and as such You Are Released evidences what seems to have been an incredibly fertile songwriting period for Mr. Rodriguez. But while his songs on Late Season Kids sound contemporary, there is something in the production on You Are Released 's more aggressive numbers that imbues the guitar [...]

#18 - No Fool for Trying by Madison Violet Madison Violet was one of my favorite new discoveries of 2009. I was completely unaware of the duo from Canada when their No Fool for Trying album showed up on Reviewshine's website (another one of my favorite things of 2009). It was one of the first albums I received and reviewed through Reviewshine , and I'm glad I took the time to give this one a listen... it's easily one of my favorite folk records of the year. In fact, they were recently [...]

Assorted stuff enjoyed this week. Lucero at Daytrotter [...]

Well... It's that time of year again. The 2009 Americana Music Association's Awards and Honors Show will be held September 17 at the historic Ryman Auditorium in Nashville. The event is part of the Americana Music Festival and Conference taking place September 16tn - 19th in Nashville. As I did last year ... I'll be taking a look at most of the awards categories and trying to handicap the field. We start today with the nominees for "Best New & Emerging Artist." First up is a [...]

A very indie release week and a not-very-hardcore one. Sorry brosephs. I haven't heard anything on here but the new Decemberists record , so I can't recommend a whole lot first-hand. Ones that I'll probably give a listen: Dan Deacon, 1990s, Fever Ray, Fireworks, Merzbow, Mastodon, MF Doom, Fridge, Mono and Obits. Looks like I've got a busy day ahead of me. What are you gonna check out? :: 1990s , Kicks (Rough Trade) :: Amadou & Mariam , Welcome to Mali [...]

I'm a little late to the party with this one considering The Gobbler's Knob posted an excellent review of the album earlier this week. However, I felt I owed it to Sarah to post my thoughts on this album after the less-than-favorable review I gave to the first track I heard a few weeks ago. Maybe this is just something that I do, but have you ever gone into listening to an album with a preconceived notion of what it's going to sound like? Either you expect it [...]

The Stars Are Out by Sarah Borges & The Broken Singles will be released on March 24th. The band's previous album Diamonds in the Dark was one of my favorites of 2007 , and witnessing their wonderfully raucous Mountain Stage set made me love their music even more. So I was disappointed to read (both on other blogs and the album's press release) that The Stars Are Out languishes in a restrained "indie-rock" sound. The best thing Borges and her band had going for them was their high energy country-rock quake, and [...]

Boston singer-songwriter Sarah Borges and her band the Broken Singles, have a new record coming out on March 24, 2009. This will be her third studio album and it will be called The Stars Are Out . She has a style reminiscent of Neko Case, Kathleen Edwards and Sheryl Crow, among others. In December, she was named "Local Female Vocalist of the Year" at the 2008 Boston Music Awards, the second time she's won this award. The first single off the new album is called "Do It [...]

Earlier this week, I was inspired by a post over at songs:illinois to go back and spend some time with the music of Boston based songstress Sarah Borges . Sarah's new CD with her band The Broken Singles is due out March 24th from Sugar Hill Records, and the aforementioned post has a track from the new album called " No One Will Ever Love You ." Sarah Borges first came to my attention after the release of her 2007 album Diamonds in the Dark. I was [...]

I was impressed by and wrote about the last Sarah Borges record. It was fairly straight forward and slightly on the raw side which I liked. I didn't think she had an outstanding voice or the best songs. But I respected her ballsy presentation of a guitar wielding woman fronted band. The promise from that last record doesn't seem to have been played out on her latest. The new record is called The Stars Are Out and is due out March 24 on Sugarhill Records . Perhaps I'm having [...]
The Subaru limousine – which I assume belongs to Ernie Boch, Jr. (nominee: Outstanding Blues Act of the Year ) – idling outside the Roxy last night was an appropriate metaphor for the 2008 Boston Music Awards . Despite it being a quasi-posh invite-only event (albeit one that any super fan could have easily penetrated), the gala didn’t reek of superficiality. Even in the VIP lounge, where those lucky enough to secure laminates enjoyed free drinks and passed hors d’oeuvres with [...]

Harlan (on the left) taking it all in. Who's the greatest country songwriter of all time? That's an easy one. The answer is Hank Williams. (What did you expect me to say?) Other greats include Merle Haggard, Willie Nelson, Kris Kristofferson, Tom T. Hall, Fred Rose, and—of course—the legendary Harlan Howard of Detroit, Michigan. (If I'm forgetting anybody, please remind me in the comments). Howard epitomized the classic country songwriter. His personal style went a long way towards defining the genre. Interestingly, he suffered a severe case of writer's block [...]
