Today is Duke Jr.'s 2nd birthday . I have a few songs that kind of sum up two years with him, plus a mini-mix of sleepy tunes. Blind Boys of Alabama ~ Born In Bethlehem Bethlehem, PA and in a hospital, not a stable. Detroit ~ Crash Landing While on the go, he has been known to fall down a from time to time. Soundgarden ~ Spoonman There was a time when wooden spoons were his favorite toys. [...]

Imagine three boys driving from Texas to New Jersey in a white Saturn wagon. Imagine them barreling down the interstates with the only the radio and "Odelay" to listen to. Imagine crossing the Mason-Dixon Line into Pennsylvania early on a Monday morning – all three boys sleepy. Imagine The Duke scanning the radio and landing on WXPN, broadcasting from a tower in Harrisburg. Imagine the Vice President of Disco Infiltration, Bruce Warren, introducing this album. Imagine The Duke trying to stay awake behind the wheel while he gets a better chance to hear some Sarah Harmer. [...]

This is in no way a definitive list of good mandolin songs. Just some I like, in beta-alpha-cal order: R.E.M. ~ Losing My Religion Bill Monroe ~ Blue Moon Of Kentucky The Del McCoury Band ~ Nashville Cats Dean Magraw ~ Brothers And Sisters (feat. Peter Ostroushko) Lewis & Clarke ~ Black Doves Largo ~ Gimme A Stone John Hiatt ~ [...]

Gone for Good . This song ties in to my general disappointment about the David Beckham explosion hitting the US right now. I think the whole situation is sad. I mean, he's a once great player whose skills have faded and his public exposure has increased. Now he's the faceplate for a league struggling to gain credibility. Instead, the league is now catering to b-list celebs like Tara Reid and the other people you read about in the gossip rags. It's chic to care about the soccer, or at least Posh and Becks. It's cool to care about [...]

photo of Sarah Harmer and Bruce Cockburn by jenniedo taken at Edmonton Folk Music Festival. August 12, 2006. It's sorta-kinda-not really a secret that Sarah Harmer is playing a show at the Grad Club on Tuesday so don't tell anyone I told you about it. Actually, if you are just hearing about it from me you're probably too late to get into this ultra-intimate gig, 'cause word on the street is that it sold out last week. I am really looking forward to this show because, as loyal b(oot)log readers will know, I'm [...]

It's a lazy Tuesday, it's breezy outside, and I wish I had both a hammock and someone who smells like home to share it with. These songs are the manifestation of those things. Listen: Sarah Harmer - Go To Sleep [from All of Our Names | buy ] Maria Taylor - Lost Time [from Lynn Teeter Flower | buy ]
Hello everyone, Huge apologies for the prolonged absence. Life at the Northern HQ of Lonesome has been somewhat all-encompassing of late and I've had technical (read: Blogger) issues. So, nearly... [[ This is a content summary only. Visit MyWebsite.com for full links, other content, and more! ]]

Six, or seven, weeks to go until the music starts at SXSW (March 14th), I won't be there, but I guarantee you that the buzz that'll build in the indie music community will be like a pot of strong coffee to me. Last year SXSW had a massive amount of music and the same will be true this year. You may already know that the festival for the past couple of years has hosted hundreds and hundreds of mp3s of bands that were showcaseds at Austin, although this year's showcase mp3s aren't online yet, last years are still [...]

This may be my all-time favorite mix. A perfect blend of acoustic guitars and piano, all mellow in mood. All album ending tracks. Perfect to play before bed. I may post v1.0; but it's not as good. Working on v3.0… keep your sleepy eyes peeled. 1 ~ Michael Gulezian: Golgotha 2 ~ Kaki King: My Insect Life 3 ~ Joe Henry: Scar 4 ~ Cassandra Wilson: Harvest Moon 5 ~ Kathleen Edwards: Sweet [...]
Hey Jozef, thanks for your comment on the last post. You woke me up. It's been a while since I last wrote - sorry, people. I've been busy sorting out a move, working, traveling and fighting back the cold, Parisian rain. If any of you live up around Canal Saint Martin [...]
I think you've waited long enough for the second half of the Sarah Harmer set. Same as before - lovely, lovely, lovely (with a touch of tape hiss). In this instalment, Sarah breaks out her Weakerthans cover and Spenser comes onstage without his shirt on. Much hilarity ensues. I missed the end of The Phoenix and all of "Goin' Out" because I wasn't paying close enough attention. Sorry about that. They sang "How Deep in the Valley" without mics so the sound is extra-low but trust me, it is pretty fantastic in person. Sarah dedicated "You [...]

Photo by Jukerr . Our hometown hero, Sarah Harmer returned to Kingston close to a year after her previous visit to perform another stunningly beautiful show. In fact, I think it may have been an almost perfectly picked set - ok, I would have added is a few Weeping Tile songs, but that's just me, otherwise it was fantastic. Ms. Harmer was quite chatty and rather funny except when she was discussing serious matter like trying to save one of the oldest tree east of the Rockies - HEY LOOK! There will [...]

I’ve never made a mix that tried to capture the feeling of Autumn, my favorite season. Until now! Just in time for tomorrow's equinox. I tried to use songs that either have fall lyrics, sound like fall, or were I purchased in the fall. Hope you enjoy. 1. Smashing Pumpkins ~ Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness (I like to start with instrumentals and this is a good one off a great double album released in October 1995) 2. [...]

You can't beat a good cover version so I though I would put links to some of my favorite. Sarah Harmer - Left and Leaving (The Weakerthans cover) José González â€" Teardrop (Live Massive Attack Cover) Elliott Smith - Thirteen (Big Star cover) Colin Meloy - The Ballad of El Goodo (Big Star cover)
Holy crap. I meant to post from work today, and look. It's 8pm and I'm still at work and I still haven't posted. Busy day. So here is the music that has gotten me almost through this busy day (I swear I'm going home soon). All links are direct downloads. Sarah Harmer and Dolly Parton have both been posted here, but never Sarah covering Dolly. I still remember exactly where I was and how I felt the first time I heard Sarah's version [...]
In November Sarah Harmer and the Weakerthans peformed were brought together in concert by the CBC. I was able to get most of the show in a rebroadcast but they cut out a few amazing tracks. I put out a plea looking for the rest and a recent rebroadcast of the original (complete) show was recorded by b(oot)log reader Craig, who was kind enough to send me the tracks to share with you all. So Craig, you are hearby awarded the "b(oot)log order of merit for you alertness and generosity." You are my new personal hero. Thanks very [...]
