Even Born Again is a six-song EP from singer-songwriter Sarah Jaffe. I can't recall how I first found Sarah's MySpace, but her voice had such a rich and beautiful lilt that I was compelled to seek out her album. Her vocal style is sometimes similar to Jolie Holland or Cat Power, but her music is much more diverse. She croons soft acoustics as easily as she bares her teeth on harder rock songs. The title track of the EP has steadily strummed verses and emotive strings on [...]

Yesterday I met up with the gorgeous Cindy Chaffin of Life Outside The Bubble and caught the in-store appreance of "Yeah, They Local" vet Sarah Jaffe and Matthew and The Arrogant Sea at Good Records. First off, Sarah Jaffe is just as amazing live as she is on record. She was accompanied on stage with fellow Denton musician Robert Gomez . What was most impressive to me about Jaffe is how effortlessly she sings. Like Alison Krauss, Sarah seems to belt out every note from [...]

This poster week's poster promotes the wonderfully diverse upcoming Astronautalis , Picnic , Sarah Jaffe and Info-Red show at the Double-Wide. The sketches seem to go well with the historical content of Astronautalis' new release. I'm still trying to find out the artist's name, but I'll update this as soon as I do.-- Jesse Hughey

We're introducing a new recurring feature here on DC-9 to highlight a few upcoming shows that interest us and, hopefully, you. Mark your calendars for the following shows... Rhett Miller and Sarah Jaffe at the House of Blues Pontiac Garage Friday, September 19 The Pontiac Garage, which used to be called the Cambridge Room, will play host to the prettiest Dallas singer-songwriter to ever pick up an acoustic guitar, and also Sarah Jaffe. Ramblin' [...]

How long before Dallas is a thing of Jaffe's past? (Allison V. Smith) And so it begins, I guess. A few weeks back, when we told you about Sarah Jaffe 's incredible new EP, and, specifically, about the stunning title track "Even Born Again" , we warned you this might happen. Well, now the national accolades are starting pour in. Jaffe, who the New York Times already (lazily) compared to Norah Jones , is now getting praise from another beacon of all things intelligent and forward-thinking: National Public Radio. [...]
For those of you living under a rock and not already aware of this: 22-year-old area folk powerhouse Sarah Jaffe will be performing at Club Dada tonight in celebration of her just-released Even Born Again EP , which, I'm sure, will be available for purchase at the show. Jaffe goes on stage tonight at 9, and, aside from the release, it's should be a special performance: Five years ago, at the tender age of 17, Jaffe sang publicly for the first time on--you guessed it--Dada's stage. With [...]

Sarah Jaffe stays focused, glasses or no glasses. (Allison V. Smith) A little treat to end the day: Robert Jenkins of Summer Break Records just stopped by the office to drop off the latest--and this time, we're told, final --version of folk wunderkind Sarah Jaffe 's EP, Even Born Again , which is set for official release in a few weeks. In case you didn't see it already: Robert reiterated it in our DOMA cover package what most of us have known for some time--mainly, that [...]

Over on our home page , we've got two slideshows of photos by the great Hal Samples from last night's Dallas Observer Music Awards ceremony at the Best Venue-winning Granada Theater . Part I contains 21 color images, while Part II has a dozen black and white shots. I'll echo music editor Pete Freedman's sentiments about last night. I thought it was by far the best of the three DOMAs I've attended so far. The only letdown of the night for me was that [...]

Thanks to everyone who came out to tonight's Dallas Observer Music Awards! I, for one, had a grand ol' time. How couldn't you have? The performances were amazing: Doug Burr and Sarah Jaffe stunned; The Whiskey Folk Ramblers riled; Lil Wil repped hard ; the Best Instrumentalists killed; THe BAcksliders rocked; Record Hop deafened; and The Cannabanoids, they kept thing fresh all freakin' night long. And the winners? Plenty worthy, folks. Full winners list after the jump, yo. (Oh, and keep an eye out on [...]

the ny times travel section had its music issue today, with articles on scenes and events in such places as morocco , istanbul , stockholm , mali , liverpool and denton, texas. each of the pieces are, i think, of interest, with reference to musical acts large and small, and you should read (or at least skim) them when you have spare twenty minutes. the article on denton was my favorite, in part because of the simple romance of a small college town with a thriving, supportive - [...]
