As we noted over the weekend in The Year's Best Coverfolk, Part 1: Tribute Albums and Cover Collections , it's been a good year for full-album coverage. Overall, though, despite the fact that, in terms of sheer mass, covers from tributes overwhelm singletons in my collection, what I've found this year is that a significant majority of the songs that lingered, and demanded overplay, came from a mixed bag of borderline genre albums and single shot coverfolk tracks, via the usual sources, from YouTube, Soundcloud, studio appearances, website and bandcamp singles, and more. Sarah Jarosz : Come On Up to the House [ purchase ] God and heaven are never mentioned in the song, but Come On Up to the House has the fervent quality of a gospel prayer nonetheless. This is true in Tom Waits original version, but perhaps even more so in Sarah Jarosz' cover. Jarosz uses bluegrass instrumentation, but also gives the song a jazzy feel. It all adds up to that rare cover that actually improves on the original. And I say that from the point of view of a [...]

Austin, Texas born multi instrumentalist Sarah Jarousz blessed the shores of Englad with her UK tour to promote the release of her album Follow Me Down which was relased on May 17 through Sugar Hill Records . Supporting Sarah was the very talented Bears Den offering those who were smart enough to get there early the çhance to lose themself in Andrew Davie's mesmorising lyrics. He provided listeners with samples of his memories mixed in with delectable riffs. Communion Records founder Kevin Jones supported Bears Den on what can only [...]

americana // bluegrass When music reminds me of home, it stirs up childhood joys and fantastic daydreams of life yet lived. Vocal tones threading struggle with hope, telling lyrics backed by bluegrass or folk-rock, with mandolin and banjo especially hitting that note. Gavin Glass does this, as does Sarah Jarosz . On her debut, Song Up In Her Head , she captures escaping wonder with inner intimacy that's incredible to realize is the work of a 17 year-old. [...]
Sarah Jarosz - The Tourist (Radiohead cover)

I mentioned Sarah Jarosz a few weeks ago . Talked about her version of The Radiohead song "The Tourist" which features Chris Thile and The Punch Brothers. I'll be honest with you, I'm not a Radiohead fan NOR a Bunch Brothers fan. But in the loving embrace of Sarah, Chris and company, I LOVE this song. Listen on Soundcloud. The song comes from Sarah's sophomore album - Follow Me Down (which comes out today). Far from a "sophomore slump". Since her debut two years ago, Sarah [...]

There's a lot of Dylan in the air this month - see, for example, both our recent feature on Thea Gilmore's John Wesley Harding , released in honor of the seminal singer-songwriter's 70th birthday next week, and last weekend's house concert preview for our upcoming show with Anthony Da Costa , who many have compared to Dylan himself. But as we've noted several times here at Cover Lay Down, the Bob Dylan canon is far too vast to justify a single feature. So here's an omnibus of a different sort: five [...]
Sarah Jarosz teams with the Punch Brothers to bring us this stunning version of Radiohead's 'The Tourist'

We first met Sarah Jarosz two years ago when she released her debut album Song Up In Her Head on Sugar Hill Records. At the time, Jarosz was an 18-year-old musical prodigy out of Austin who had just graduated from high school. The record was even released in the summer so Jarosz would have time to tour in front of it before starting college classes. Two years later, a 19-year-old (20 later this month) Jarosz is back with her sophomore effort Follow Me Down . Like her debut, this disc is loaded [...]

Photo by Erika Goldring Maybe you have never heard of Sarah Jarosz. Maybe you don't know she put out a great album two years ago (I wrote about it here ). She is kind of a wunderkind. I don't think there is an instrument she can't play. And her songwriting chops are ahead of her age. She was on Prairie Home Companion this past weekend. A Garrison endorsement is never a bad thing. She has a new album coming out soon – "Follow Me Down" on May 17. [...]
I'm in a restless mood tonight, yawing wide in both taste and timbre. But my nocturnal meanders keep taking me back to covers of the same few songs - and for me, that's generally an indication that the blogger's mind will not rest until we take on the history of the author and his songbook. Ironically, however, tonight's feature subject exists in short window of time indeed, even as his songs linger as cultural earworms in the culture today. So let's move right along to this living legend who has not recorded a [...]
Anyone searching for glimpses into the future of modern Americana and acoustic music need look no further than 19-year-old Sarah Jarosz . A virtuoso multi-instrumentalist who played onstage with the likes of bluegrass legends Ricky Skaggs and David Grisman at age twelve, Jarosz eclipsed any stubborn genre boundaries with the release of her debut album Song Up In Her Head (2009, Sugarhill), a brilliant achievement that also introduced a talented singer and songwriter. She also joined up earlier this year with burgeoning Americana band Black Prairie (featuring three members of The Decemberists) for some touring [...]
