Speaking of "Crossing Brooklyn Ferry", the Dessner brother-curated festival coming to the Brooklyn Academy of Music in May (May 3-5 to be exact), I have the names of a few people who will be playing. The Brooklyn Youth Chorus , who worked with the Dessners in 2011 (for a show at St. Ann's and an Ecstatic one at Merkin Concert Hall ), will sing a major new work written for them by Bryce Dessner. The NOW Ensemble will perform Sarah Kirkland Snider 's "Pale As Centuries", [...]

Here's something very different to the standard Party Porpoise fare that I write about on these pages. Sarah Kirkland Snider I was scrolling through the Emusic Best Albums of 2010 , when I came across something called "Penelope" a cross-over album mixing the music of Sarah Kirkland Snider and the voice of Shara Worden. Snider is a composer (no less), of Classical Music, (with real orchestras and stuff) and Worden is the singer and song writer for her own band, My Brightest Diamond, and has recently sung with the Decembrists on tour and Sufjan Stevens [...]
Clocking in at over seven minutes, Sarah Kirkland Snider 's "The Lotus Eaters" isn't so much a music video as it is an epic undertaking. The song is taken from her latest release, Penelope , and features the vocals of Shara Worden (of My Brightest Diamond ) and the chamber act Signal . Check out the magnificent and lengthy visual above.

How about a little high-brow premiere to get this Wednesday started? Composer and my Princeton, NJ homegirl (can a composer be a homegirl?) Sarah Kirkland Snider has generated a minor critical tsunami this year with Penelope , a project she has developed for performance as either a song-cycle or a musical-theater monodrama. The modern-day story revolves around a woman, who refers to herself as Penelope, whose long-missing and amnesiatic husband unexpectedly turns up at her door after two decades at war. In an attempt to restore his memory, [...]

Composer Sarah Kirkland Snider teamed up with Shara Worden (aka My Brightest Diamond) for "This Is What You're Like," a track from Snider's upcoming album Penelope . Now I'm not 100 percent clear on this, so I think I block quote from the press release will suffice: Derived from a multimedia-theater piece co-created by Snider and playwright Ellen McLaughlin, the work centers on a woman whose long-missing former husband turns up at her door, traumatized by two decades spent in an unnamed war. To restore his memory, the woman reads aloud from Homer's "Odyssey." [...]
