Editors’ Selections: Week of June 10th, 2013

Editors’ Selections is an opportunity for your favorite  Dancing Astronaut  contributors to talk about some of the music they’re listening to that we might not always get an opportunity to post about from week to week. Sometimes it’s out there, sometimes it’s obscure, but you’ll always get a peek into what we’re loving behind closed doors.  Andrew: Rüfüs - Desert Night Not available until June 21st, Rüfüs's "Desert Night" fuses indie dance vibes with a sex-fueled [...]

EDM Interview: Magnetic Catches Up With BT To Discuss New Album

BT - Skylarking
It seems this year will truly be the summer of revelations as this week Magnetic follows up with the legendary BT to discuss his upcoming ninth studio album A Song Across Wires . Arriving at the rendezvous point with a drink in hand, we spotted our interviewee and got down to business. BT, otherwise known as Brian Transeau, has been fairly quiet during this second coming of EDM culture in the US and is now set to make his move. We wasted little time discovering what drives the heart and mind of one of the hardest working producers [...]

EDM Download – Austin Leeds – Fresco (Original Mix) – File Under House Music

EDM Download – Austin Leeds – Fresco (Original Mix) – File Under House Music Our friends at Less Than 3 posted this insanely good track, check it out below... I've lately found a lot of house tracks to be growing monotonous and repetitive, but When Miami native and veteran producer Austin Leeds hit me up with his new tune, Fresco, I had no choice but to give it my immediate stamp of approval. Fresco is composed with the feel of a classic prog house track but sonically focuses on something much darker. Fat subs and a deep growling synth not only properly juxtapose with the drops beat driven [...]

Slighter Summer

Slighter's having a clear-out. For you that means a free download of a Sasha remix he did a year or so back; a reminder that his remix LPs are going to be discontinued shortly; and some T-shirts to buy. Not a bad haul for you. The free remix is here. All the way back in 2011, I said " The original of Cut Me Down is a trancey, swooshy affair which gains a harder edge as it goes along - apparently specially commissioned from Sasha for IMS 2011 – but which has a vocal which sounds disconcertingly like Sting. Slighter’s [...]

Good Morning Mix: Sasha Live at Space Ibiza Opening 5/26/2013

Last weekend - as the summer season kicked into high gear - Space Ibiza enlisted Sasha to christen the 2013 season with a gripping set of deep tech and atmospheric electronica. While not as rage-friendly as the sets his US-contemporaries were playing in Las Vegas, Sasha's opening set on the White Isle is dynamic, subtle and equally exciting. A perfect hour to re-initiate you into the real world on this Tuesday morning, the legendary producer features cuts from Uner, Timo Maas, Kaiserdisco and Nicole Moudaber - not to mention three incredible IDs. So sit back, sip your morning coffee and [...]

Good Morning Mix – Sasha’s 6 Mix for BBC Radio 6 (5/10/2013)

Radio 6 is dedicating part of their May broadcasting to "pioneers," and as Sasha explains himself in the introduction to this mix, he took his own two hours on air to play some "beautiful music." This mix will make you feel like you're curled up on a living room rug next to your favorite speakers or over at Sasha's home for dinner listening to his choice tunes of the moment. Much like  Involv3r,  Sasha pays homage to quality indie music of this day and age, highlighting his own progressive spin or that of his army of protégés. There's even [...]

The second event will take place on July 27 th and will host Luciano, Carl Craig, and Moodymann. The Recent Decent

FOR surfers in a hurry, I've added a new feature to the Sound Advice sidebars. The Recent Decent is made up of the three must-hear albums reviewed in recent weeks, so if you haven't got time to read through all the latest posts since your last visit, you can rest assured the very best will be listed. The first additions are Bonobo's The North Borders, Orchestre Poly-Rhytmo de Cotonou's The Skeletal Essences Of Voodoo Funk, and Sasha's Involv3r - so if you haven't heard all of them yet, get on it. Stoney Charts Week 7: Kish’s Top 10

Stoney Charts Week 7: Kish’s Top 10 It's me. I'm back again with another 10 songs I am listening to this week. Music has become slightly more interesting since the last time I did one of these things; Daft Punk news, Jai Paul leaks and Duke Dumont recognising me as his #1 fan on Twitter. Despite all the electronic-hype I've found myself listening to early 20002s acousta-pop and funnily enough, it became relevant this week. 1. Jennifer Paige - Crush I debated between the original and the 'Jai Paul' cover. Considering the mess that has become Jai Paul's album [...]

Miami Music Week on the ground and behind the lens; a photographer’s journey

Miami Music Week on the ground and behind the lens; a photographer’s journey You've seen photographs online after parties that were absolutely bananas. Most likely, you've also seen the ones taking those photos, or you've seen the flash, and the one responsible has vanished. Camera in hand, I'm one of the many dark figures running through nightclubs, squeezing through groups of people packed in like sardines, trying constantly to find the best spot to capture that one moment when the pyrotechnics erupt and the crowd goes wild. Often times, these seemingly endless treks across clubs are fruitless, and we feel compelled to move again...and again...to chase the perfect shot. It's always a challenge; [...]

[top_post_splash num="16"] For those of you who have attended Miami Music Week, you know that it's an impossibility to hit up every good party happening in Miami, no matter how hard you may try. Though trying to choose was difficult, LessThan3 has narrowed down some of our favorite parties that happened during MMW 2013, from a late-night tech house set from Sunnery James & Ryan Marciano at The Delano to b2b appearances from Guetta, Afrojack, Aoki, and Laidback Luke at Mansion. Good Morning Mix – Sasha & John Digweed Live at WMC Yacht Party 2009

Sasha & John Digweed  have been creating music together in the UK since as early as 1993 with the release of their triple CD mix Renaissance: The Mix Collection. They continued their superstar rein on the dance music scene with album releases like  Northern Exposure 1 & 2 in 1996 & 1997, which heavily influenced the progressive and trance genres we hear today. Throughout the late 90s and early 2000s they toured internationally while holding a coveted residency at New York City’s Twilo nightclub, until the popularity of dance music waned in 2003. In 2008 [...]

Sasha opens up about the making of ‘Involv3r’

As dance music enters a new era of global prominence, its first magazine pin-up seems well situated in his elder statesman role. There’s not much that hasn’t already been written about Sasha and the enduring impact he has had on the scene. In headier days with partner John Digweed , the Welsh DJ/producer pioneer paved the road to dance superstardom with his iconic albums and marathon extended sets, conquering America during its first rave wave in the process. The blueprint he helped establish remains revered and replicated by a new crop of artists who are [...]

Album Review: Sasha / ‘Involv3r’ (Ministry of Sound)

Album Review: Sasha / ‘Involv3r’ (Ministry of Sound) ★★★☆☆ Nearly ten years since the first Involver compilation and five since volume two, Sasha’s Balearic teaching is still resonant and relevant. Building, taking his time, showing clubbers where to go and what to do when the sun begins its descent, he of a golden age of superstar DJs works up a deep tech house session with as much relish for loosening up and keeping going. Effortlessly fluent, personally guiding the sun down himself like an airport marshal, Sasha’s set hums sagely while a wiry girly or candle flickering vocal usually wraps [...]

Review: Get involved with Sasha's Involver

THE mythical third instalment of Sasha's Involver series, Involv3r, doesn't disappoint fans. The long-awaited release straddles the realms of mix album and original release, such is the intricate work the veteran DJ puts in to the collection, which features the likes of The XX, Foals, Little Dragon and more given a blissful Balearic house makeover. The result is an eyes-closed, arms-raised collection of dance music - and these days there are plenty of them to the pound, sure - but everything here has an ethereal sheen to it. Overall there's the feeling that this mix is a [...]

Good Morning Mix – Sasha at Shelley’s Laserdome (1/25/1991)

It's a fair to say the dance music world as we know it would not be quite the same without Sasha . From the late 80s on, Alexander Coe worked his way up from a comfortable Welsh upbringing to quickly represent the best of UK DJs in early 90s rave. In 1991, before teaming up with John Digweed and his legendary Mixmag cover hailing him as the "Son of God," Sasha took up residency for a short couple of months at Shelley's Laserdome in Stoke-on-Trent - a city due south of Manchester. The club scene was directed by different [...]
