WORD
Late last year, Midwest producer Fancy Mike released the great Madison Square Gardner EP on King Deluxe , full of thick programming and effervescent synths. One of the most notable aspects to his music, though, was an affinity with orchestral sounds and composition. While the music had its heart in hip-hop, the underlying structure was in the symphony. It lends his music a weight sometimes not found in the bright, spastic beat constructions that circle the globe today. Not one to rest on his laurels, the new Sigma Chi Primavera [...]

Here's a little selection of what I've been listening to over the past week. It's a combination of my last.fm plays, online streams and the odd song I've heard on the radio. So, in no particular order, let's have a look. First up is a 502s/rockabilly girl-folk group called Louise & The Pins , hailing from London. They happen to be rather good friends with Laura Marling, in case you need any extra incentive to check them out. The music consists of simple guitars behind lovely vocal melodies. And they have [...]
Photography: Randy P. Martin Fancy Mike is here with a free album that's full of glitch, beats and whatnot: it's like it's made for turning up the volume and not giving a damn about anything. The 320kbps version is available for purchase here ! Fancy Mike - Adult Swim (feat. Stephen Farris) Fancy Mike - Ramachandran #1337 (Satanicpornocultshop's Bleep Bloop Blorp Refix)

Earlier this year Ergo Phizmiz released "The Faust Cycle" , a 14+ hours dream fable, told through speech, songs, collage and sound-design. The diversity and oddness of sounds and harmony literally cried for being remixed. So did the snippets & sampels Ergo provided for this remix project. Now here they are, in order of appearance [click artistname to get myspaced / tracktitle for direct download]: Anton - The Faust Re.Cycled (DJ Faustus RMX) Motoko Ishii [...]

Got a message from artist Thiaz Itch a few days ago that he's on a 3CD free download compilation on Peppermill Records together with other stalwarts of the electronic & netlabel scenes : Vernon Lenoir , Gangpol und Mit , Jason Forrest , Karl Blau and Satanicpornocultshop among others. There's no extensive info on the release but I've figured out on my own that they are covers of theme songs. Now we know most cover versions are a way for talentless hacks to make names for themselves in the [...]
Netlabel Peppermill Records dishes out a deliciously weird, eclectic, and often surprisingly fantastic set of TV theme song reworkings on the brand new compilation, The Box. It's a 2-plus hour extravaganza of covers, remixes, and thrashings; the song titles don't...

Was für ein gigantisches Projekt auf Peppermill Records . Und dabei auch noch fast durchgängig mit grandiosen Titeln, höchst sympathischen Musikanten, skurrilen Einfällen und vor allem jeder Menge Spass. Bin begeistert. Fernsehen sollte immer so klingen. Zeep - Smoking Boxes Candlestickmaker - You Have The Right To Remain Silent Scrambled Mache - Norm XOX - Would You Be My Thunder Power - Jack The Tripper Br'er - I'm Not A Acientist [...]

And now for something completely different: absurd electronic/hip-hop sampler experimentation from Japan. Satanicpornocultshop take turntables (three of them), drums, electronics, trumpets and one petite singer named Lisa and create a sound that's as eclectic as it is weird. Songs jump from funked out, electronic acid jazz to swirling noise-pop to relaxing, seaside dub, along with countless other musical stylings, without will. And then you get to songs like "Ghost 2," a song that heavily samples Michael Jackson and the Ghostbusters theme, leaving the listener to wonder what kind of statement this group is trying to make. [...]

I know alot of other sites do semi-regular covers features, and so far I've been resisting the urge. Now, in the steamy home stretch of summer, I fear the tension between me and cover versions is just too great to deny. I can't take all these longing gazes, sleepless nights, and petty arguments springing from nowhere, any longer. While common decency won't let me do this on a regular basis, I need a release. So here, in an abundant, unthinking burst I give you more cover love than you can possibly handle. Hopefully things won't [...]
