Post-rock with vocals, what a touchy, touchy subject. I, in my lifetime, have never heard truly bad instrumental post-rock, only mediocre. Where the mediocre turns to bad is the addition of vocals, a choice forgone by most post-rock bands; it's extremely hard to make work without ruining the beauty and atmosphere created by the instruments, and one bad voice or clash could send a good song spiraling (like adding a a spice to a dish that could throw the whole flavor balance off). Two bands that walk that tightrope are Our Ceasing Voice, those who read [...]

There you are, Steve Borth! Now based in Copenhagen, Borth was once the saxophonist for Rx Bandits and afterwards released some great, soulful reggae-pop as Satori. His latest project, CHLLNGR , finds him crafting music of a much different nature. "Ask For" is a hard one to peg; the track clearly has an ambient, experimental vibe to it but also grounds itself with a driving hip-hop beat, all the while dipping its toes into the shallow, minimalist end of dubstep. It's pretty interesting stuff, and despite it being a bit out there I found myself hooked. Take a listen [...]

The other day I began to describe the origins of the Sunday Mix Tape feature. Today, I'll describe the end of an era. The second fifty mix tapes, which commenced on January 28th, 2007, saw an increased amount of attention paid to marginalized artists. It was almost as if the first few dozen installments were my way of convincing people to come along for the ride, and the second fifty mix tapes were my way of introducing people to the really good shit. Three years ago, before the reissue and the recent Pitchfork review, you'd never see an [...]

I can usually only tolerate the harder regions of dance over 140 bpm-land in small doses - after too much and I start feeling like I'm going insane. This is why I didn't hold much hope for enjoying Australian "psycore" producer Satori when my Traktor discovered that his tracks had speeds up to a blistering 167 bpm (beats per minute). Boy was I proven wrong. Satori is a newer name to the scene (is there a "psycore" scene?), but he is certainly trying to establish himself quickly. His latest EP, A Sharp Kick to the [...]

flower travellin band - "satori pt. II" (download) Some amazing Japanese psych-rock, released on Atlantic records in 1971. Touches of Black Sabbath and Led Zeppelin. This record is HEAVY, and seemingly ahead of its time. Original copies of this on vinyl still go for a good amount of money on eBay. They've since reunited, and released a new record in 2008. It is a vast departure from their earlier sound (the stuff on their official Myspace page doesn't even touch what they were doing years ago). As of [...]
We here at MetalBlows take our retro obscure seriously. Not simply the passing fads of 'ain't-it-oh-so-hep' genre rehashes-of-de-moment, but I'm talkin real-deal old-school underground shiz...naturally, this holds especially true when it comes to classic psychedelic prog. And therefore, I am honored to present to you this long-stuck-in-the-crates (or hard drive, rather) Japanese gem from yesteryear. [...]

I guess today is another one of those two-update days. Aren't you readers lucky? Both music related! I guess I'm finally living up to my billing as a music blogger? The thought of it might be sickening, sure, but the reality is that I try to spend as little time writing about music as a music nerd possibly can. I don't want to bore anyone. With that in mind, here's another music related entry. A mix tape! RULES for uninitiated noobs : With 100MB of webspace, I give birth to a weekly Mix Tape to be [...]
