i had a nice surprise in my inbox the other week when i received an invitation from ryan carrol to check out the music of his new band from the pacific northwest, called saturna . of course i am always up for hearing new music, especially when they cite influences like the jesus and mary chain , silversun pickups , and the dandy warhols . and i was quite pleasantly surprised to find that these guys are quite good. i especially like the first song, "springboard", with its spacey art-rock feel that places [...]
SATURNA Saturna is really hot. Just For Thrills-Saturna . THE DIGGS Old friends of Berkeley Place, The Diggs, recently covered Underworld’s Ibiza anthem “Two Months Off†at their record release show at Sin-e in New York City on December 9th, 2005. The Diggs next play Northsix on Friday September 15 w/ Annuals. Here is the live mp3: Two Months Off (Underword cover)-The Diggs . COLD WAR KIDS Everybody loves [...]

When I first read Saturna 's name, I of course thought of the planet...why wouldn't I? Saturn still is a planet, isn't it? You never know, they knocked Pluto off the list for no particular reason. Now, after 12 years of public education with 9 planets being drilled into me, I have to remember that there are only 8 planets. Anyway, not to get off topic, Saturna (the band, not the planet) has released their first studio album, the EP ...All Night , and maybe it's just the [...]

Listening to their debut EP, All Night , there is a sense that they might be aliens, traveled back in time to kidnap Spacehog's Royston Langdon to use their wildly advanced technology to steal his mojo. Of course, the Portland band has the luxury of not having (yet) teased the American mainstream with a single that downplays a greater talent (and the sad misfortune of never having touched Liv Tyler's sweet, sweet flesh). I like them. There's a grandiose nature to their music, like the music that plays during a sweeping camera pan over a metropolis [...]

Most well known as the romantic and musical companion to Matthew Herbert, Dani Siciliano will be adding even more to her resumé as she will be releasing her second solo album, Slappers , this month. The album is in succession to her underrated debut, Likes... , which boasted some brilliant production from Siciliano and Herbet. One of the standout songs on her new album is 'They Can Wait', which delves into beeps, bops, flutes and even classical guitar to help classify a very interesting tune. As Siciliano was [...]

What I love about Saturna is that their music is unobtrusive. This Portland "space-rock" band delivers the perfect backdrop to any 'chill' party. Their latest album, All Night, claims to be the perfect companion to a night of heavy drinking. I'll test that out tonight. Add this Band on Myspace [...]

Before starting this blog with the other contributors, a long conversation took place about what the aims should be. I think all of us recognise that we want to share great music with a wider audience, but at the same time we were always hoping to be introduced ourselves, through comments and emails from readers, to a wide range of independent and less well known music for our own personal benefit. This is why we push heavily for anyone with a tip to comment on entries and tell us about it, and also why we encourage bands and labels to [...]

One of the really great things about having this blog is receiving emails from bands who like what I do here enough to want me to have a listen to their music and post about it for all of you. I don't get nearly as many of these emails as the popular kids do, but I get enough to keep me busy. And the toughest thing for me is figuring out how to deal with the stuff I don't like. I know how difficult it is to be an up-and-coming band trying to get the word out any way you [...]
there is a veil of mist hanging over the ocean that just will not go away. tiny droplets of water condensed and clouding the appearance of reality. so yeah, i guess these songs suit my hazy happiness for the day : [mp3] get off - dandy warhols [mp3] springboard - saturna [mp3] red eyes and tears - black rebel motorcycle club dandy warhols / saturna / b.r.m.c. also : article : united nation

I just got back from The Silhouette, and for those non-Bostonians out there, this is one of the best bars in town. The beer is cheap, they have a pool table and I can always catch the baseball scores. My co-worker Greg turned 24 today, and after he went to see Lifetime, we all met up at Herrell's and then made our way to The Silhouette. The best part of the night could have been easily ripped out of a movie -- it was one of those surreal moments that I'll probably remember for the rest of [...]
