Combining complex metaphor, time travel, scintillating lyrical gymnastics, anime, radical politics and an apocryphal-dystopian comic book aesthetic, Red Tide member and Florida MC, BC , The Black Child , delivers his solo debut, the first of a three part conceptual album, " Time Pieces. " " Time Pieces " is a temporal travelogue, a sonic cultural history, and a riveting manifesto about Pop World , told by a dark messenger from the future, stranded in time, and compelled to [...]

Wassup, soul kids? How we feeling out there? I know that I've probably been left for dead, or maybe plastered on the side of the milk carton you use to float your Cinnamon Toast Crunch, but there's no need to call Nancy Grace just yet. Despite all reports to the contrary, yours truly is alive and back to raise some long-awaited hell. It's cold and rainy today, which reminds me that before long, I'll be spending the majority of my time in hibernation. That likely means trouble for all of you, [...]

Inspired by the the seminal film Afro-punk (2003), spotlighting Black Punks in America, Afro-punk is a growing cultural movement giving a voice to thousands of multi-cultural kids fiercely identifying with a lifestyle path-less-traveled. Not unlike the early days of Hip-Hop, the scene is a touchstone for tens of thousands of urban progressive kids across the nation (and the globe) who, tired of feeling like outsiders, have sought out Afropunk.com, where thousands of users, bands, bloggers, and activists gather to and connect with the Afro-punk community. The AV Club's interview with Trent Reznor is a good read, but I of course liked what he had to say about the brave new digital-music world: "The thing that I learned from Radiohead is, I don’t want to ask you what you think it’s worth. 'Hey, I just worked a year on this thing.' 'Well, that’s worth 10 cents.' 'Hey, fuck you!' The Saul [ Williams ] thing was a lesson. I naively thought at that time that if you gave the public the choice of do the right thing or not, I thought people would actually do it. [...]
While his other albums all have worthwhile tracks, Williams has never sounded so focused; his self-titled album isn’t a spoken-word masterpiece—it’s just a masterpiece.

Have you ever had this happen to you? Step 1. Listen to a song enough that it gets really really stuck in your head, but don't pay attention to the song name/artist. Step 2. Find yourself singing the song to yourself later and have literally ZERO idea where you know the song from, what song it is, what artist it is, or anything at all identifiable about it. Step 3. Search through your 50 most recently played tracks to find the song. Step 4. Rock out to the song [...]

We know you're weighing some big decisions: Hamburgers or hot dogs? Fireworks from Shawn's house or Vanessa's rooftop? How early is too early to start drinking? Living Colour , Janelle Monae , Saul Williams , Game Rebellion , Joya Bravo , Earl [...]
