Tiny Tiny is a brief interlude from Japanese-born sonic artist Sawako. She captures the delicacy of the music box and via some rich reverb uses it to fill a much larger space. It sounds like looking back on the past through a fisheye lens. Exquisite. Taken from her 2007 album Madoromi . Sawako - Tiny Tiny (alternate download)

The Noise! Festival kicks off tonight at the Ontological Hysteric Theater (131 East 10th Street at 2nd Avenue in Manhattan). Despite the "festival" part of the name, I suspect it will feel more like three small shows over the course of three nights, which is often just part of the charm of noise festivals. The performances will be streamed (video and audio) by free103point9.org , so if you can't make it you can still check it out! In addition, each night's performance starts with an act transmitting their set from a remote location (New Zealand, Greece, and, [...]
With each passing year, we find ourselves closer to the future. In fact we are so close that I can smell it (like chip shop vinegar, in case you are wondering). Before we get there, I feel strangely compelled to make lists, to document just what it was that made 2008 so uniquely rich with [...]

I admit listening to drone is an acquired taste. Although droning has been an integral part of music since the medieval times or even before in the case of music coming from Southeast Asia; electronic textures and drone seem to be the perfect match for this concept to manifest itself as a "genre". It might sound boring to listen to an evolving hum or chime for a given amount of time and most people certainly find it as such, yet over time I've been more and more attracted to searching for perfect moments of peace listening to drone. [...]

Everlasting... I was having a conversation the other day with a friend in regards to reality being a personal visual medium, in terms of what we see as individuals is the reality that exists for that individual. I think that reality would be better defined as one's truth. What you believe to be real. I think that the confusion of these terms leads to social blindness, as in if someone believes that their truth is the actual reality, and no other version can exist, it is that fundamental extreme behavior that seems to be poisoning people today. Reality [...]

Sawako Bitter Sweet (05.2008, 12K) Verdict = A gorgeous soundtrack to forgotten ponds The last time we heard from Sawako around these parts was on last year's astoundingly beautiful release under the Anticipate banner, Madoromi . Now after only a brief break Sawako is back, releasing her fourth album, Bitter Sweet , back on the equally wonderful 12K label (also the home of her debut). Despite the label shuffling, Sawako maintains an aural consistency that has moments of both gorgeous relaxation and intelligent tension. The album opens with borderline atonal droning on "Wind Shower Particle" that [...]
steal the way network presents: nicolas and carla [episode 3] opening theme close up of an eyeball. slow zoom out to reveal a rat , then a gutter, then a street at night, light refracting through the mist and catching the huge stones on the side of a building above a cobbled street. we pan up to a window accompanied by the sound of distant bells. the camera moves over the balcony, through the double windows and into the room. pan around to the dresser [...]
It will probably be to my eternal regret that I couldn't find a suitable date to visit Mandrew in Japan. It is to remain the strange, crudely stereotyped place of my imagination: where all the men (except Mandrew, who is clearly too busy for such tomfoolery) play pachinko, and all the women seemingly make gorgeous [...]

sawako has released her third proper album, modoromi , through anticipate label. hum for me was an ambient/drone masterpiece. the moods set in her works are comparable to brian eno's ' music for airports .' although she introduces more field recordings and less song structure, they both seem to have the same intent . both set the listener in a state of calm space. sawako's modoromi has more instrumentation then hum ; in some tracks you can hear definite instruments like guitar where in hum [...]

this sat ant , mayo , and i went to sawako 's performance at monkeytown in williamsburg. monkeytown is a bar/restaurant with a room focused on presenting quality audio/visual shows. the sets are usually reservation only, maintaining a controllable audience, with entree order mandatory to watch the performance. snazzy dishes and a room boasting 4 screens enclosure, 6.1 surround sound, and limited capacity of 32 guests. the space serves as the perfect medium for sawako's material. this time sawako was performing her own visual effects, i think using jitter. the visual's were beautiful, moving from [...]
