![[MEGA Playlist] 60+ Instrumental Tracks You Need to Listen to](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/4741497_lg.jpg)
Everyone loves lyrics. Whether they're light-hearted and playful, soul-gripping and gut-wrenching, or abstract and avant garde, we all love to sing along, relate certain verses to our personal lives, or just be taken away by another person's story. On the other hand, hearing a great instrumental track is an entirely different experience. Without having words to identify with, your brain is free to let the music create an image in your mind. The interpretation is more so up to you than if you had someone defining it with their own words. Having this blank canvas allows your mind [...]

Due to the unprecedented demonstrations and protests in Egypt, this week we are dedicating the Sunday 25 Songs mix to the people of Egypt. All songs in today's mix have some kind of relevance to the events in Egypt over the past five days. Therefore, we have songs about Egypt, peace, violence, democracy, the people, [...] Read more, get songs or stream the entire mix on Indie Rock Cafe
The long days of what has been a brutally hot and humid summer for many areas of the United States, Europe and Russia are beginning to wane as August tips towards September. ![My band history in Spokane, Pullman, Glens Falls and Fort Collins [Curiosities #31]](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/2345775_lg.jpg)
I've been in several bands. Scratch that, millions of bands. I never planned on blogging about it but it's interesting to chart the changes and friends that came and went over the years as I moved around and broke up/started new outfits. Lemme see if I can name them all, in order: Demolish (sixth-grade project with one Matt Willims , who moved on to KICK ASS in Smash Velvet and Bullet Club in Seattle; he's [...]

As always, this is a subjective project. I do think that everything on here is legitimately great, but I'm not going to pretend that my tastes correlate perfectly with some objective standard for the best. This is a list of the records I liked this year. Nothing more. The emphasis is on indie rock, but there's a bit of punk, quite a few instrumental records, a decent amount of rootsy stuff, and a bit more straight-up pop music than in previous years. In some ways, it's been a weak year for music. I'm [...]

While I professed in my albums post that perhaps this wasn't the greatest year for albums, or at least it didn't have too many true classics, 2009 has been an incredible year for songs. I really had trouble culling this list down to only 100, which is definitely a lot of songs. Of course, when Spencer Krug's various bands take up over a dozen slots, it leaves little room for other things, but this was a really wonderful year. Even more shocking is the staggering list of great new albums expected out in 2010, but we'll save [...]

2005 opened my eyes to a world of new music. I joined the crew at KZUU over the summer, my first summer back in Pullman working toward my Masters in Business. I'd spend my two-hour show pouring over thousands of obscure albums, looking for anything that might spark my interest. While music had always been a borderline obsession, until now it was just that - borderline. In the days that passed, it became a full-fledged consumption of everything me. There are turning points in all of our lives, and DJing at KZUU was absolutely one [...]

Vague Space is planning a little, long-needed break from posting until next week. I would tell you the 8 million things I have to do over the next few weeks, but everyone's busy I'm sure and no one wants to hear anyone else whine about it, unless it's over a few glasses of wine. So please have a happy thanksgiving. Take a breath. And if your schedule is anywhere near as crowded as mine, try to enjoy your time off, because the break will not last nearly long enough. And as always, thank you for reading. I plan several [...]
You heard it here first! In a joint effort, Crossroads of America Records and Flannelgraph Records (both from Bloomington) are releasing a series of records on 33 CDs that will be released monthly (2 releases per month) as a year long subscription service called the Laminar Excursion Monthly . Sales will open up on Monday, November 2nd and they are EXTREMELY limited to only 100 copies. Each 33 CD will be approximately 20 minutes of new, unreleased music from each artist. Lots of the bands involved frequently play here in Louisville, so it [...]

I’m sick of tired of the ongoing battle of blogging versus the mainstream media like it’s supposed to be a war where one is supposed to be the victor (blogging). Look at it this way, blogs ARE now mainstream media (popular mp3 blogs used to be very indie, it's become very mainstream). It’s a pointless discussion because it’s irrelevant who actually “wins” – the goal all along was to bring better music to the forefront and that is exactly what’s being accomplished. So blog readers, music lovers, indie lovers, mainstream music lovers, bloggers and publications, I salute you. [...]

It really doesn't matter how I'm feeling, I love me a good sad song. Life can be as chipper as possible (and in most ways it has been lately) and still I'm a glutton for some melodic misery. I've been questioned about it a million times and my only great explanation is that it's definitely the emotional vicarious thrill and not the therapy that most people suppose it to be. There's just nothing like that wash of bummedness drifting over you. On that note, here are some of my recent faves; they aren't thoroughly bummed, but they deliver nonetheless. Enjoy. [...]
Saxon Shore - Nothing Changes. Things are starting to wind up around here. The spring is coiling back, tightening. It's a slow process, but at some point soon it's going to release. You can feel it. The clockwork winds and winds, each quarter turn bringing us closer to the beginning. For four years the Saxon Shore have been winding that spring, and on track one of their new album the finally let it all go. It's a glorious exercise in crescendo dynamics and remind me why I love this genre so much. Producer Dave Fridmann tucked his usual bloops...

Ah, summer. With all your sun and your heat and your humidity and your sweat. How I missed you so. I just ran 2.5 miles, the furthest I've been able to go since my knee surgery, and you know what, it hurt like hell, but out under the summer sky on a beautiful day, all is right with the world. Barbecues and blooming trees, sandy beaches and broken dreams. Summer comes only once a year. Let's enjoy it this time. Download Camera Obscura - "Honey in the Sun".mp3 [...]
Saxon Shore is a post-rock band that's been around since 2001, when the then-duo of Matthew Doty and Josh Tillman released Be a Bright Blue , a great little record on their own label. They've followed up with 2 more full-lengths plus an EP (the stellar Luck Will Not Save Us from a Jackpot of Nothing ) on Burnt Toast Vinyl, an independent label out of Philadelphia. But it's been four years since their last release and the band's members have all been involved in side projects since then. Last summer, though, they finished up a new [...]

Many years ago, I was reading something online about how the author had to take a multi-hour trip across the state of Kansas or something and decided that was the perfect time to listen to The Magnetic Fields' magnum opus 69 Love Songs , a 3-Cd collection of, well, 69 love songs. I thought that was a cool idea and anytime I take a long road trip alone I try to figure out some music to play for the ride -- and which songs and albums are best. Typically, I gravitate toward [...]

I know it's a day early, but I'm leaving you with this post for the long weekend, which could not have been more anticipated given the past 3 weeks I've had. But the Phillies are still in first place (barely), I don't have to go back to Indiana next week like I'd feared, and the Tour de France starts on Saturday. So things are -- finally -- looking up. Enjoy the weekend. I'll see you Monday. and I can't lift you up, my mind [...]
