I'm really excited about the fourth installment of I Used to Love H.E.R., a series in which artists/bloggers/writers discuss their most essential hip-hop albums ( read intro ). That's because singer Sarah Daly of the London-based Scanners discusses in a quick Q&A an album that is one of my top three favorite hip-hop records. That only made me appreciate the group's new LP Violence Is Golden ( Dim Mak ) all the more. Visit Scanners Web site or MySpace . Below is the mp3 for the single Lowlife. [...]

Dim Mak's Scanners , who released their latest album Violence is Golden in June, are streaming the entire album on Altsounds.com's online radio destination Altsounds.fm . The band will also be playing a few shows with Forward Russia! at the end of this month. Scanners - Lowlife (radio edit) Scanners - Violence is Golden [album stream] Dates: [...]

With a sci-fi name like Scanners , you kind of expect a band to play some prog-rock and sing about 12-sided dice and aliens. Surprisingly, these Londoners play a mixed genre that includes new wave, pop, blues and post-punk which I would categorize as straight up rock. Isn't it tough to categorize alot of bands these days? I was immediately drawn to their single 'Lowlife' simple but catchy riff and the opening lines I know you're not ready to live/ Are you ready to die ?. [...]
This is a short review of the band called Scanners, and not the Cronenberg movie. If you've somehow managed to stumble upon this page while looking for the movie, head on over to IMDB. Or read about the band's "Violence is Golden" for a bit, and then off you go. Anyhow, Scanners deeply channels [...]

The rock block. A Friday tradition that I'm not so good at keeping. I have no idea what this song by The Prototypes means. Seriously, my French is limited to fromage, "Ca Plane Por Moi," and Jean Luc Picard. This French tune comes off of their self titled American debut. It sounds somewhere between garage rock and big beat and has a big, fuzzy, heavy riff that I so adore. The Prototypes - Je Ne Te Connais Pas.mp3 [...]
I am going thru the mass of emails that has accumulated in my inbox over the last few weeks, and have linked up a dozen selected mp3's that have caught my ear. I hope you also enjoy them. photo by Peter Williamson Here's some music to tide you over. I threw in a couple of Montreal artists (Malajube and Angela Desveaux)... I've been thinking about family lately and I was born in Montreal. Speaking of family, my younger brother, Pete, has been taking pictures for a number of years and has grown into a very good amateur photographer. This pic is by him, you can see more of his stuff
THIS WEEK'S FINDS week of Aug. 27-Sept. 2 "Los Angeles" - the Rosewood Thieves After the old-timey piano intro, the first thing you're likely to notice here is singer Erick Jordan's spunky vocal resemblance to John Lennon--whom he readily acknowledges as one of his musical heroes. (There's even a lyrical reference to "that bird that flew," for good measure.) If this already seems like a good thing, you're home free with this song; if however you're trained to be disapproving of transparent influences, I urge you to relax that learned reflex and [...]
I usually filter out most of the indie rock that lands in my inbox because there about five billion blogs out there already doing that. Often it doesn't really hold much interest either. But I can't let Scanners slip by without posting something up. In Scanners' "Lowlife", singer Sarah Dailey sings with a sense of urgency that cannot be ignored. Post-wave, post-goth, post-indie, whatever - Dim Mak's Scanners is some catchy brit pop that is like the perfect way to end this week and head into the weekend. It's chill yet it still holds an edge. [...]
Not a big fan of Aoki but the guy signs some good bands. Here are some MP3's from Dim Mak. Violence Is Golden - LowlifeSunken City - Souls She SaidRetreat - The RakesHeadlines - Neon BlondeShut Up And Kiss Me - Pony Up!
I started a music club called Synergy Music Club (SMC) on a band's forum that I visit last year. The idea is to share unknown or under the radar music so each week a member chooses and then uploads an album on our common email a/c via yousendit and then everyone listens to it and posts their thoughts on that album. I've got introduced to lots of cool artists that way - Architecture in Helsinki , Art Brut , Saul Williams to name a few and I've also turned them on to Clann Zú , [...]

[ July 11, 2006 / bookmark ] SCANNER MP3S: Scanner (aka Robin Rimbaud ) has newly posted two mixes he created for the Tate Modern's tribute to John Cage 's Musicircus , which ran at the end of this past May. A 10-minute piece called "Tate Modern Hall" ( MP3 ) is a light whorl of slowly spiraling sounds. And the three-minute "Tate Modern Voices" ( MP3 ) is a collage of spoken snippets. More info at tate.org.uk and scannerdot.com .

Tom Sachs - Chanel Guillotine [Breakfast Nook] (1998) The Scanners' post-punk urgency is classed by a backup string arrangement and popped with a catchy chorus. The tremendous lead track "Lowlife" is reminiscent of The Futureheads' throwback chilled and filled out by a female sensibility and a level-headed violin. It retains, however, a perpetuation of the popular style of self-deprecation which feeds off the [...]
