We've got quite a backlog of CDs we've never gotten around to, so we're going to try to chip away at the pile with this regular feature. Some are left over from previous music editors, others fell by the wayside because they were trumped week after week by albums that looked more promising. The plan: to take four or five at a time and play each CD for as long as I can stand it. If you were expecting this yesterday, as promised in the print product's "Seven Days Out," I apologize for the late [...]

Unfortunately, it's not the guy who directed The Dark Knight. No no, it's Joel Schumacher - who, in addition to the franchise-killing Batman & Robin has brought us such gems as 8MM, Phone Booth, The Number 23, and the movie version of The Phantom of the Opera. So clearly, Scars on Broadway are going for quality [...]
Congrats to MetalSucks Maniac Renee for winning last week's last week's Funny Photo Caption Contest; Renee - whom I sincerely hope is aware of the double-hilarious meaning of her entry - will receive Nachtmystium's Assassins: Black Meddle Pt. 1; Terror's The Damned, The Shamed, and Hail of Bullets' …Of Frost and War in the mail [...]

I know the phrase "guilty pleasure" gets thrown around a lot (including by this particular writer), but the latest by System of a Down appendix, Scars on Broadway, falls hard under that category. If your patience for it is limited, the band can sound like, quite possibly, the worst band you've ever heard. Like, exceptionally bad. Like Incubus getting their asses kicked by Frank Zappa's retarded, untalented nephew that works at the Citgo bad. But if you give the record a shot and don't expect too much from it, much like the aforementioned fictitious nephew, it can provide a surprisingly [...]
System Of A Down is breaking up? Serj Tankian is releasing a solo album? System Of A Down is NOT breaking up? Daron and John have a solo project? I love tabloids, don't you? I first listened to SOAD after reading about them in an issue of Revolver, and a close friend loaned me a copy of Toxicity and their self-titled LP. Addicted, I soon became to songs like "CUBErt" and "Jet Pilot", with clever lyrics such as "humans everywhere, canned" or "through the eyes of a horse on a jet pilot" (whatever the latter actually means). So [...]

Note: This is the debut album from the band fronted by Daron Malakian (System of A Down guitarist/vocalist/songwriter) . SOAD drummer John Dolmayan joins him on drums. Sound: They bounce between slick, arena-ready metal; stomping, more aggressive punk; reserved, mid-tempo rock; and power ballads. The bizarre, theatrical, progressive tendencies and political/social/environmental commentaries of System of a Down are still present, but Scars on Broadway is more melodic and less frenetic...

After playing with the successful rock group System of a Down for ten years, it is understandable that Daron Malakian and John Dolmayan would want to shake things up a bit and with Scars on Broadway's self-titled debut, the guys are getting that chance. Malakian takes the vocal reins on this side project and with Dolmayan [...]
