We started The Key because of our love (and your love) of Philly music. As Matthew Borlik, the editor of The Key, says right up on our home page, Philly has long had "a rich musical history, a unique musical identity, and one of the nation's most thriving musical communities." From the days of American Bandstand right up to now, one could follow the musical timeline to find some of the most important music ever made. From the roots of rock and R&B, to jazz, folk, punk rock, psychedelic rock, indie rock, singer-songwriters, hip-hop, and the soulful jams of [...]

"We're the best ever. Of course, we're fucking cunts in other ways." -Lee Plump The duo that began with the old skool breaks over a decade ago, continue to show audiences worldwide why they can pack any house in the land. Lee and Andy continue the mission of having a great time playing music. And it's not just to take on the bass splitting, syncopated hitting drumstyles of a single genre anymore, either. For the past few years, they've expanded into other parts of House, Electro and even some Epic House (albeit, in the form of some seriously [...]

"One song, one take, one cab"—that's The Black Cab Sessions in a nutshell. Stuff as many members of a band (and their respective pieces of equipment) as possible in the back seat of a cab, then give them one shot at recording a song as the vehicle makes its bumpy way through town (usually the streets of London). The online video series—which has has been going on since May 2007—has featured performances by everyone from Weezer and Brian Wilson to Grizzly Bear and St. Vincent. According to The Black Cab Sessions Twitter , they arrived [...]

This is NOT A&M mastermind exec John McClain Hot news off the Twitter feed! Earlier this afternoon, Questlove offered up this retweet from The Official Jackie Jackson Twitter Page (ACCEPT NO IMITATIONS), regarding the are-the-vocals-real-or-are-the y-fake controversy surrounding a handful of songs on Michael Jackson's upcoming, posthumous release: RT @ JackieJackson5 : John McClain (co-executor) and I have insisted for many weeks to have certain tracks removed from Michael's new album. Apparently, the Internet mistakenly thought (or optimistically hoped) that the John McClain referenced in the tweet was [...]

Congratulations to Philly's favorite Blackberry-touting DJ on his latest accomplishment ! (Oh, and good job Questlove, for earning the #10 spot.) Diplo reacted to the news with this tweet: "Whoa! #2 biggest idiot on twitter! Thanks @ pitchforkmedia http://bit.ly/bxudEA .I will @ everyone back 2day in honor! Might take a while tho." And he wasn't kidding—we had to click the "more" button four times just to find his response, which came all of three hours ago.

Photo by adamhenning Wendy Fonarow, "Indie Professor" over at The Guardian (and actual anthropology professor at the University of California at Los Angeles), has some dos-and-don'ts advice for bands about to head out on tour. Despite the fact that most indie bands I know aren't in any position to hit the road in a tour bus or make a habit out of staying in posh hotels (which makes her advice regarding tour-bus etiquette and hotel-room afterparties somewhat puzzling), there are plenty of helpful tips to be found here. (The part [...]

It's been a while since I've reviewed, and for that, my humblest apologies. Sometimes life has a way of prioritizing events for you and this post is intended as a catch-up. There was the Yea.Nice clothing launch party on October 2, hosted at High Noon Saloon and featuring our local Dirty Disco Kidz, where I was greeted as I walked in the door with a crushing hug by someone I thought I knew, but couldn't remember - rare for me - and who turned out to be snowboarder and company co-founder J. J. Thomas. Friendly fellow. [...]
Longtime Philly musician George Manney has ambitions to capture the history of local pop music in all its wonderful glory. As a participant in and student of the Philly music scene, Manney has become an archivist—collecting and curating Philly music memorabilia on his Philly Pop Music sites. He's got a fun collection of old Electric Factory posters, band photos, set lists, and pictures from the old American Bandstand; the kind of memorabilia that, if you're a Philadelphian, will likely pull on your rock-and-roll heartstrings. Manney's current work-in-progress is a documentary called [...]

Alex Lewis/Raldesign.com David Uosikkinen , the drummer for The Hooters has launched a pretty cool, ambitious project. He's recording the Essential Songs Of Philadelphia , songs he's particularly fond of that were recorded in Philly or were written and performed by Philadelphians. The songs will feature the ITP (In The Pocket) band, with a revolving line up of Philly musicians. For his first song, Uosikkinen chose to cover "All My Mondays" by the [...]

Once upon a time in Philly there was the Electric Factory version one, located at 22nd and Arch Streets, which opened in 1968 and played host to some of the great bands of the Sixties and early Seventies. While Electric Factory Concerts remained a booking and promotion business, the place closed in 1972 and in 1995 the Factory (version 2) opened on North 7th Street in Philly right off Spring Garden Street. The Electric Factory is celebrating its 15th anniversary this October by making an offer you shouldn't refuse. Starting at [...]

This can't be a coincidence. As if anyone working within the film industry needed further evidence that everything director M. Night Shyamalan touches is doomed to die an ignominious death, the financially beleaguered Prince Music Theater has officially declared bankruptcy —just two weeks after it was confirmed that Shyamalan would be there for the Philadelphia Film Festival 's screening of his 2000 film, Unbreakable . (Cinephiles may remember Unbreakable as the last half-decent film Shyamalan made before moving on to such unfathomably awful films as Lady In The Water [...]

It's Monday night, and I'm growing accustomed to this routine. The conveniently located Mercury Lounge, the patio for which I can see from my front porch, beckons and starts the week off gently. Open Mic/Open Decks night at The Mercury Lounge is every Monday, and week in, week out, David Birins (DJ B) tirelessly promotes a single night in downtown Madison where any schmoe can belly up to the turntables and become a DJ for one shining moment. It's funny, every other person I meet these days seems to be a DJ, but not many [...]

In 1952, legendary jazz saxophonist John Coltrane made Philly his home. Coltrane moved into a house at 1511 N. 33rd Street—which was recognized as a National Historic Landmark in 1999—with his mother, cousin, and a friend; three years later they were joined by his wife Juanita "Naima" Austin. Coltrane used the house both as a primary residence and a temporary base during his tours, while his mother and cousin lived there permanently. Coltrane was born on this day, September 23, 1926 in Hamlet, North Carolina—and, in remembrance to his influence on jazz, we take [...]

The Cardinal Bar's September edition of Dub Pub, Madison's premier dubstep and dope beats show, featured a solid line-up of Milwaukee's newest addition to its bass culture, Grimetron, veteran Kruser, and Madison's own Max Ohm , who graced the booth for multiple sets and really kept the floor moving. Max Ohm will be playing multiple sets at Majestic's upcoming Beats Antique show, with Lynx, on September 30.
