This post is the result of the picture. But it is a good excuse to post SchneiderTM's radical reinterpretation of The Smiths' There Is A Light That Never goes Out . And there's another cover version as well, from New West in classic mode. Schneider TM - The Light 3000 If electronic is too radical, this version by New West (Chris Zurich) is in classic singer songwriter mode. Except he didn't write it. Obviously.
In ABON 0158 we explored the hypothesis that Morrissey's songs were half the dreams, hopes, desires and eternal optimism of the true romantic and half the sadness, daakness and fears that a true romantic would, of course, also experience. But we also saw that, in The Smiths, despite Morrissey's deliberate attempts to throw people off the scent with his macabre word games and provocative titling, the light nearly always triumphed over the dark. And that was at least partly due to the fact that his brilliant and brilliantly idiosyncratic lyrics were carried to a higher, more uplifting plane by the soaring, airy [...]

The most remarkable aspect of the transition we are living through is not so much the passage from want to affluence as the passage from labor to leisure. Leisure contains the future, it is the new horizon. The prospect then is one of unremitting labor to bequeath to future generations a chance of founding a society of leisure that will overcome the demands and compulsions of productive labor so that time may be devoted to creative activities or simply to pleasure and happiness. - Henri Lefebvre Craft Spells - Love Well [...]

I've been working on a downtempo/ambient mix with a touch of "proper" 2-step and dynamic dub step (Joy Orbson), here are a few tracks off the mix to tickle your senses this rainy friday afternoon... SCHNEIDER TM - LIGHT 3000 BURIAL - ARCHANGEL (PHASEONE REMIX) BLOC PARTY - WHERE IS HOME? (BURIAL REMIX) JOSÉ JAMES - BLACK MAGIC (JOY ORBISON REMIX) Look for the mix to drop soon, [...]

Schneider TM - Pac Man / Shopping Cart label: City Slang year: 2006 side a: Pac Man / Shopping Cart side b: Thursday Night Blabla www.schneidertm.net | www.myspace.com/schneidertm More German pop-ish electronics. I love this. Don't understand why I only own this 7" by Schneider TM, his whole discography should be in my Expedits. "Pac Man / Shopping Cart" is from the album Škoda Mluvit , which is also the last one he released. So it's about time for a new one, [...]

Mama Cass Elliot was a wuss Happy National Peanut Day ! The peanut got a bad rap earlier this year due to a salmonella outbreak that affected everything from my morning breakfast to the Keebler Elves . Why not go to a baseball game before the season ends and eat some peanuts? Really, there's no better way to spend a Sunday afternoon. Schneider TM - Peanut Actually, there is a better way to spend a Sunday afternoon. Go [...]
Germans have an interesting concept of pop music, especially when electronics play in to the mix. I'll credit them with always having a strangely coherent grasp of melding the organic and the inorganic into something that felt more natural than when other nationalities took a stab at the same thing. Schneider TM, the recording name of Dirk Dresselhaus, is a guy who has a masterful grasp of a solid songcraft, threading "Slide" with a warm comforting melody that intermingles violin, vocoder, and dissonant guitar ambiance with a thin semblance of looped percussion. As much [...]

Brand new DFA comin' at ya. We've been sent this new track from Hercules & Love Affair and if you haven't heard this already be prepared for some serious cosmic disco in the usual DFA mould, this time with added vocal stylings from Antony (of Antony And The Johnsons fame). This track took a little while to seep into my consciousness but has grown on me steadily and is now revealing it's unique sound. The 12" is released on March 3rd through DFA and also comes with a mix by House legend [...]
Quickly: 1. Schneider TM is phenomenal and you're about to pick up some new heat 2. They cover The Smiths 3. Morrissey is a pimp 4. Somnambulists have a new album 5. Flight of the Conchords continues to provide exceptional weekend programming Proving once again that only the funkiest German chickens can lay perfectly shaped electronic eggs, Schneider TM, aka Dirk Dresselhaus, released Zoomer in 2002 containing the all-time asleep in space hammock jam titled Frogtoise . Yes: Schneider TM - Frogtoise (Exploitation Edit) [...]

Stars of the Lid - The Evil That Never Arrived (Kranky 2007) Stars of the Lid – Stars of the Lid and Their Refinement of the Decline / Kranky Sadly, I do not have a musical ear, though it's not because I cannot read, play or understand music, quite the contrary in fact. I was always the head of my section while playing the saxophone through my pre-college years (at which point I gave it up), I can read music, have taken numerous theory classes throughout my [...]
The Smiths - There Is a Light That Never Goes Out Take me out tonight, Take me anywhere, I don't care, I don't care, I don't care. And in the darkened underpass, I thought, oh god, my chance has come at last! But then a strange fear gripped me and I Just couldn't ask. First off: the original! In case anyone hasn't heard it. The Smith's were part of England's Alternative Rock movement of the 1980s, one who focused on simple guitar music and good lyrics instead of synthesizers. They remind me a lot [...]

The Hourly Radio is a name not unfamiliar to me, but one I hadn't actually listened to until today. Now that their touring and hitting NYC very soon, I decided it was time to finally sit down and take a listen. Singer Aaron Closson has a voice very similar to the somewhat nasally vibrato of Brian Molko. But then in Means To An End , it sounds as if he's channeling Geddy Lee of Rush. I'd definitely recommend this if you're a fan of Placebo... or in a mood to brood. I always [...]
