It's hard knowing who to follow in this group, as the members of Field Music also represent School of Language and The Weeks that Was . So, when news came that Field Music had new tunes to offer up on their web site, of course we jumped at the chance to get our hands on these songs. You can do it yourself by heading to the band's web site, or just borrow one from us. Download: Field Music [...]

[...]David and Peter regrouped with a new philosophy ( »no rules is good news »), and began recording the new Field Music LP a few weeks ago. Keyboardist Andy Moore is training to be a professional chef, so the Brewises are on their own, writing separately then recording together in their shared space. They're expecting the new album to be out by the start of 2010. source Yeeeeepeeee eeeeyaaaaaaa aaaaayaaaa yeaaaa aaah ! J'attendais la confirmation depuis les [...]

It's been a few months since we've posted anything on this blog, and to be honest, I was about ready to pull the plug on the whole thing. Film Junk has kind of become the focus of our blogging efforts, and it seems like MP3 blogs in general are kind of a dying breed since even a lot of the indie bands are now actively blocking sites from sharing their music (which they are obviously well within their rights to do). That said, we were looking for a place to post our Top 10 Albums of [...]

I mentioned School of Language last week and I thought it fitting to do a little followup. This is one band/album that somehow never breached my ears in 2008, despite being the logical progression of one of my favorite bands of 2007 (Field Music) and coming out in early February. SoL is basically FM's leader David Brewis' solo incarnation, launched after he felt Field Music had come to its fitting conclusion. This could have been a sad thing. The fortunate thing is that Sea from Shore could have been a side-step (or even a [...]

It's an odd thing, not doing the thing you've always done. Due to the timing of this instance, it's been nice to spend time doing all the things everyone else is doing. The hustle and the bustle, the joy and the aftermath. I'm cleaning up shreds of paper and tape, putting things back together again, and listening to these songs. I thought it was fitting to share them in the interim between here and there, wherever "there" may be. Consider no post "the last post" until I say it is. Take that, winter! [...]

I'm taking a break from the blog for a few days to concentrate on life, love, family, and food. I hope everyone out there has a holiday full of happiness. I leave you with a small playlist of songs that might not make it into the standard radio station's wintertime set. Enjoy! mp3: Bishop Allen - Winter Coat mp3: Blitzen Trapper - Christmas Is Coming Soon mp3: Pas/Cal - I Wanna Take you Out In Your Holiday Sweater mp3: Ugly Cassanova - [...]

Unlike my Top 100 tracks list I can't claim to have driven myself insane trying to root out and listen to every fantastic album released this year. In fact its a challenge these days to get me to actually listen to a full album, so destructive has the ipod shuffle function been to my attention span. Here then are my albums of 08. Its not really a best of, but they are the ones that got the most listens and gave me the most pleasure. As ever I'm sure I've forgotten as many future classics as I've remembered. [...]

As promised, here's the first installment of my top albums of 2008. At the very beginning, I wanted to do a top 20; then it became a top 25; soon after, I made it a 35; eventually, it ended up as a top 40. Of course it now means that every Friday til the end of the year will feature a rather odd yet even eight albums. I will admit that I was still listening and arranging today. The inherent disclaimer in all this is that this list is of my top albums, in other words my [...]
The Week That Was The Week That Was (Memphis Industries) If there's a sibling rivalry brewing in Britain's Field Music camp, it's good news for fans of the Brewis brothers' oblique pop collective. David Brewis' early 2008 release as School of Language found him performing most of the instruments and adding a heavier sheen of distortion to Field Music's futuristic chamber pop. Andrew Brewis, by contrast, pursues a more collaborative and pensive route on [...]

What's the use of a digital-only soundtrack if there is only one? Here I've re-imagined key moments of the film and paired them up with their proper musical equivalents. Tho' I do like Charles Trenet quite a bit too. School of Language - Rockist Part 1 Metallica - One Alice In Chains - Man In The Box Death Cab For Cutie - Underwater (smog) [...]

I think I have posted a song about this side project form Field Music's David Brewis before, but I honestly can't remember...my ramblings all tend to bleed together in my head and I am too lazy to check the archives. But I digress. School Of Language's debut record 'Sea From Shore' is well worth checking out. It's a really interesting listen, experimental at times but it never seems to get to the point of inaccessibility. School Of Language - 'Rockist Part 4' MP3

Sunderland, England Wishing I could go on an "Extended Holiday" sometime soon... "Extended Holiday" School Of Language on MySpace School Of Language on The Hype Machine

In April 2007, Sunderland UK's Field Music decided to kind of stop making music to persue side projects. One of these tangents is David Brewis' School of Language. In February, School of Language released Sea From Shore on Thrill Jockey . When listening to this, I guess I could throw around terms like "post rock" or "friggin' great", but that wouldn't really pin point what Brewis accomplishes on Sea From Shore . The core of the album is held together by the epic four part Rockist that fleeces [...]

Field Music's Tones of Town was a wonderful blast of XTC-styled pop, and it established the British band as a young, hip group. Sadly, not long after the album's release, the band went on hiatus. I can't tell you if the band is dormant or if the "hiatus" is just the typical euphemism for "broken up," but I do know that leader David Brewis' solo project, School of Language , is a worthy endeavor. To be honest, the music on Sea From Shore is not radically different from Field [...]
