Losing a member can leave a band in disarray or void of the power they once held and it frequently puts the music in a wildly off-putting direction. The concept is also not something that typically leaves the project in a seemingly directional state. In plenty of other cases, however, a lineup change may challenge a band to revitalize their thirst for making music, try new things, and in general, move on. In October 2010, Claudia Deheza, the twin sister of current frontwoman Alejandra Deheza, left School of Seven Bells. Since then, they have continued to play shows and write [...]

A glowing, angelic Alejandra Deheza floats through School of Seven Bells latest video for the song Lafaye . During the video, images of a sex party of sorts appears as the backdrop. The video was directed by David Lowery and Toby Halbrooks. Watch it below. Ghostory is out now on Vagrant Records / Ghostly International . You can stream the entire album here .

Allegedly the School of Seven Bells is a pickpocket school in South America at which the final exam entails fleecing a mannequin decked out in bells... As obscure as this moniker may be, it's fitting. SVIIB mesmerizes listeners with innocuous shoe-gaze before striking, their exquisitely piercing sentiments not registering until after the fact. They accomplish their goals artfully, never clumsy enough to set off any alarms. Reminiscent of George Harrison's exploration of Eastern mysticism, SVIIB's sound has a transcendental quality evocative of sitar ragas. Alpinisms (2008) and Disconnect From Desire (2010), tiffany and bewitching, prove and develop [...]

I've been sort of ho-hum on School of Seven Bells until their recent output put me over the edge. Now I'm a full-fledged fan. Sirius XMU has been steadily spinning "The Night," which was the first track of theirs to prick up my ears. The video for the first official single, "Lafaye," was shot in an antique home in Dallas and caters to the song's ethereal vibe with duotone lighting, slow motion pans, and a general cryptic atmosphere. Close ups of singer Alejandra Deheza make it much more palatable. [via Rolling Stone ] You can stream [...]

For an act so intangibly ethereal, Ghostory is as aptly entitled a latest chapter as School of Seven Bells could dream of scoring into their spectral history. Claudia Deheza has departed, leaving identical twin Alejandra and recomposed Secret Machine Benjamin Curtis to their own devices, and said devices seem to have remained divinely oneiric. Whilst the circumstances of Claudia's egress may remain suitably obscure ('personal reasons' were ambiguously touted as motive), if there were ever any smouldering animosity between brothers Benjamin and Brandon the reddening hatchet's indubitably been shoved six feet [...]
From 'Ghostory', out tomorrow.
This week in NYC live music marks the return of Bowlive, Soulive's annual multi-night residency at Brooklyn Bowl which usually involves a slew of great special guests, cover sets, and interesting surprises. Also this week, we've got Craig Finn's solo project, Leo Kottke, Cults, Van Halen's triumphant reunion shows at MSG, and the Secret Policeman's Ball w/ Coldplay, Mumford & Sons, Jon Stewart and many others.

There are many times when it's wonderful to live in New York City, yet few times are quite as amazing as these next fews weeks, a time when tons and tons of amazing bands come through town before they make their way down to Austin, Texas for SXSW . It does make sense, what better way to build up some hype before the year's most important music festival/conference than playing shows in New York City? With Tennis , Body Language , School of Seven Bells , Stepdad , Craig Finn , [...]
True fans of music spend countless hours searching for that next great song, album or artist, whether it be online or in a local record shop. The beautiful thing about music in today's age is that technology has created an infinite supply of great music that is available to us at the click of a mouse. How perfect is that? We can discover a brand new artist on the opposite side of the globe in seconds without a radio or a music television channel. It only makes sense that a website so dedicated to this gorgeous universe of music would [...]

For the past few years, a whole new generation of artists have been tinkering within the shoegaze genre, giving it a facelift and dubbing it "nu gaze." Oddly enough, it's hardly fallen on deaf ears. Last year, M83, one of the finest progenitors of the movement, opened the door for countless listeners with its latest opus, Hurry Up, We're Dreaming , an album whose tracks have been surfacing just about everywhere by now. Now, some four months later, fellow former tour mates School of Seven Bells (often stylized as SVIIB) return to the fold, [...]
A formerly great pop band goes bland. On their first two releases, 2008's Alpinisms and 2010's Disconnect From Desire, School of Seven Bells demonstrated an aptitude for crafting irresistible pop nuggets, constructed around Benjamin Curtis's electonic soundscapes and the ethereally lovely voices of Alejandra and Claudia Deheza. Since the release of Disconnect From Desire, Claudia has left the band, taking her vocals with her and leaving the others to carry on as a duo. Sad to say, it was those twinned vocals...
