Searching For The Now Vol 5 [...]
First Few Weeks Into The PhD Program We are officially into the heart of the school year, now in the fourth week of our first year of a PhD in American Cultural Studies with a focus on Film & Media....

My most recent assignment for my MFA program is a pretty exciting one. Our task this semester is to pick a dead, dying or defunct brand and revitalize it. We are free to choose pretty much whatever we want so long as we can make a case for its need of a makeover and/or repositioning. The goal is not only to develop a new identity system for the brand, but also to extend its focus into untapped commercial avenues. For this part especially, we are encouraged to let our imaginations go wild. At the end of the project we will [...]

This must be the greenest cover art we have ever featured on Eardrums , and I bet it livens up the otherwise dark colours of our site. The music has a similar effect on me. All dark thoughts disappear when The Voluntary Butler Scheme starts to play. His music certainly cheers me up. When I say "his", I mean Rob Jones , former drummer for UK's The School , and the only member of The Voluntary Butler Scheme. I love his former band, but I am really glad [...]

Der Katalog ist handverlesen (Velocity Girl, Stereolab, The Softies, Rocketship, The Lodger), aktuelle Aushängeschilder sind Crystal Stilts und The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart. Letztere veröffentlichen nächste Woche eine neue EP mit dem Titel "Higher Than The Stars". Die EP enthält [...]

My nephew's matching lunchbox and schoolbag Today is the first day of September which means, I guess, the end of summer and the start of the school year for many kids and a few teachers. It's also the very first day of school for many little boys and girls around the world who'll be embarking on a wonderful adventure as they start to learn about the alphabet, numbers, painting and how to send text messages on their brand new mobile phones. They'll also get to meet new friends and spend a few hours a day away [...]

One of the lovely things about indiepop is how timeless much of it is. At times it's difficult to assess exactly when a song comes from just by listening to it. Case in point is The School 's cover of The Left Banke's And Suddenly . Now obviously if you're already familiar with The Left Banke, this exercise is rendered rather meaningless. I knew the song was a cover from when the band played it at Indietracks, but I had no idea it dated back to 1967. A song 42 years old that [...]

Still working out the details of the new blog in the midst of my job hunt, etc. Until then, I just couldn't wait to share this:

Sunday didn't get off to the greatest of starts. Waking up rather early after a terrible night's sleep at the Travel Inn, followed by Tesco breakfast (surprisingly edible), and then arriving on the site before anyone else at all wasn't the best feeling in the world. Still, after not getting to any on the Saturday, I was determined to catch at least one on-train performance, namely that of The Manhattan Love Suicides. Now, apparently they'd broken up shortly before the festival, but having no idea, went and sat and waited for them in a train [...]
