The event is being presented by N.A. Poe's "The Panic Hour" radio show and Occupy Philadelphia Media. Their objective is to showcase "the voice hip hop provides to a community often underrepresented or also now known as...'the 99%'" [...]
<!-- <!-- <!-- Recently, Red Bull sat down with Redman, Joell Ortiz and Schoolly D during their involvement with the Red Bull EmSee series, to discuss the first time they've ever spit rhymes on the mic. Throughout the video, the three successful MCs tell their funny "first time" stories. For Redman, it was the time he performed at Lincoln Park when he was 16 years-old. For [...]

Quick, name the city that you believe birthed Gangster Rap? Chances are you picked somewhere on the West Coast, with LA & the City of Compton likely being the places most folks associate with the genre. Most wouldn't think of the City of Brotherly Love when faced with that question, but you should: Philly legend Schoolly D is credited by many as being one of the very first Gangster Rapper. Well, now that the lunatic who murdered all those people in Norway has bizarrely used Schoolly's P.S.K. (What Does [...]

It was obviously strange to learn about the connection between Norwegian mass-murderer Anders Behring Breivik and Philly's own godfather of gangsta rap Schoolly D . Breivik's manifesto titled 2083 - A European Declaration of Independence uses text from American academic John H. McWhorter's 2003 essay "How Hip-Hop Holds Blacks Back," which happens to mention Schoolly D and his street anthem "PSK What Does It Mean," to justify his rants against hip hop and its potential to lure listeners into drug use and violence. Well, you can read Schoolly D's response in an interview with City Paper's Critical [...]

Read the credits alone to "It Ain't Over Til It's Over", the newest leak from DJ Khaled 's next star-studded LP We The Best Forever , and it becomes pretty obvious the posse cut king is banking on this cut being heralded as the next huge NYC Hip Hop-Soul anthem. Rounding up Mary J , Fab and Kiss on a single track, atop production that bites off of Schoolly D's oft-sampled golden-age rap classic "PSK, What Does It Mean?" no less, and it's almost [...]

Right...so you guys remember last month's comp ? Yeah...I'm still trying to wash all the lovey-dovey ickyness from it off of me. So I went the complete opposite direction on this one. That's right. This one is 100 percent ignorance. Copious amounts of profanity will spew from your speakers and headphones. People will get shot. Drugs will be sold. Women will be degraded (only on wax though, I don't play that shit in real life). But yeah man, this comp might just offend someone. I'd be lying if I said I don't bump every last one of the songs [...]
Sharon Van Etten On World Cafe "Intimate and hushed, Sharon Van Etten's folk tunes tend to quiet any room she plays them in. These are the type of nuanced songs that can render a crowd breathless. Van Etten was introduced to an eclectic blend of folk and rock 'n' roll while growing up in Nashville. She worked her way to Brooklyn, and after a national tour in support of her debut album, Because I Was In Love, she turned to Epic, a seven-song LP that was one of NPR Music's favorite records of [...]

You're not going to beat tonight's lineup of over at ICA. For starters, you've got a rare performance by Blues Control , a Philly-based experimental rock duo that cranks out waves of atmospheric electronics (and has released albums on Siltbreeze , Holy Mountain , and Woodsist ). Prior to the band, there will be a 6:30 p.m. lecture by ICA Senior Curator Ingrid Schaffner titled "The Artist As Curator"; following the performance, there will be some kind of "DIY Valentine project." Then, there are the pierogi—mounds and mounds of pierogi, as far as the eye can [...]

Schoolly D - I Just Can't Help Myself There was a time when I truly thought that nothing good ever came out of Philly - and I was mostly correct. But I have had a whiz-with, I've run up the steps to the Philadelphia Museum of Art and I have watched my friend shake up a bottle of beer and spray it all over the trashy people at the trashy bar we were at - so I know there are at least a few good things to find. Now some of you [...]
