So the 2007 edition of NxNE kicks off tomorrow evening (if you don't count the satellite "NxNExtra" shows) and I must say I'm more excited about this year's lineup than I've been before. Of course, I'll be missing many of the bands who've piqued my interest because I haven't yet mastered the art of being in three places at once, but as a matter of principle, it's a good sign for the fest. One act that's coming to town who might be flying under the radar but are worthy of note are North Carolina's [...]
Schooner has a new album called Hold on Too Tight coming out on the 7th of August on the Michigan label 54º 40' or Fight! . Expect more about this record, and Schooner as they prepare to return to NYC, very soon. Until then I just wanted to pass along two excellent songs from this upcoming release. I will easily admit that I gave Schooner a pass on name alone. Growing up in Halifax, Schooner was the beer of choice for herohill (and if Schooner needs to gets some traction in the indie blog scene, we will sell out for free cases… just sayin'), so seeing the name of the Chapel Hill outfit being one in the same warmed my east coast heart. After the promise of their first LP - You Forget About Your Heart – I was excited to so the band returning with the follow up on 5440' [...]

I was first turned on to Schooner when I heard their 2004 song Trains And Parades . The North Carolina band had released their album You Forget About Your Heart , which was full of great fuzzy-pop guitar and keys, kinda in the vein of The Shins and the Rosebuds. They're back this year with a new album, Hold On Too Tight . Schooner's MySpace . [...]

If you've been reading EAR FARM for a while you've no doubt seen mention before of Schooner . Certain bands tend to scratch you in all of the right places and Schooner's been working that magic on me for a while now. Yet I've never properly given them the EF treatment and I haven't had a chance to have them play an EAR FARM Presents... show , but all of that's about to change. Take a moment to read the following and then come on out to see them tomorrow at Bickett Gallery . [...]

Chapel Hill/Raleigh, NC Schooner has a few dates this month in their home state of North Carolina. Find them at their MySpace page and try to check them out if you're in the area. "Normal Day" Schooner on MySpace
Friday night's Troika festival shows (schedule here ) are pretty diverse, and I can't say that there's one that really stands out as clearly better than the rest. There are quite a few bands that are really great, but they're mixed in with others that I'm not at all familiar with (or, honestly, just aren't my thing). This is supposed to be structured so you can wander from one venue to another, and this looks like a good night to do just that. Here are some highlights: 305 South starts off the [...]

Though there was still Pop Montreal programming on the Sunday night - albeit a limited schedule - it seemed most other punters I knew headed home after Saturday night. My initial plans had involved The Constantines' free show at Main Hall but I ended up staying at Casa Del Popolo the whole night, even though headliner Carolyn Mark had to cancel for reasons unknown. What ended up transpiring was as follows: Relief Maps @ Casa Del Popolo - Hearing of the cancellation, Matthew from I Heart [...]

The vocals on Make Me Mad remind me of Stephin Merritt, or Jens Lekman, in their ponderous levity. They've got a show tomorrow (10 Oct) at P.A.'s Lounge in Somerville--looks like their set'll start around 9.30; I'm going. tags: [Music] , [Live music] , [mp3] , [Earworms] , [Schooner]
As it would happen, the stars are not aligned for me to catch a wonderful show this weekend. Between a poker tournament and the Dodgers (hopefully) beating the Mets this Saturday, I am over booked to catch the Hinkley and Schooner show at the Spy Bar here in Rochester. Schooner prolongs the great Chapel Hill scene with some noisy indie rock that I, and I can imagine many others, could get behind. The band reminds me of the Magnetic Fields with a tinge of Americana, but with just [...]

Because I posted about them so long ago I feel as though I never gave Schooner a proper EAR FARM write-up. This isn't one really but as I type up this post about Schooner news I just realized you guys might not really fully grasp just why you should check them out. They're a band from Raleigh/Chapel Hill, NC who play that certain kind of American indie-rock you're used to hearing from Wilco or The Rosebuds but the songs they write are distinctly their own. Schooner's music balances along the melodic divide that [...]
Schooner: " Ominous Bird " " Carrboro " (demos from forthcoming album) Well, I started working on an elaborate post about something else, but that's not going to get done for a while, so here's something to tide you over. Schooner 's moody, lo-fi pop is another one of my long-term favorites , so I was excited to see that ringleader Reid Johnson had put a couple of their demos up on the band's MySpace . (Though a little anxious, since he seems to be suggesting that [...]
