I'm running late on the post today because I was determined to find something new. I must have visited 60 Myspace pages, website and blogs before finding the topic of todays post but it was certainly worth the search. Darren Solomon is a seasoned producer out of dirty Jerz who makes electronic music under the name Science for Girls. The track is a cover of Pomplamoose's Beat The Horse , which is a great song in it's own right but the minimalist yet soulful production makes it a dream. According to Solomon this is how the song came about... [...]
Sorry for the slow & sporadic updates this week; haven't been feeling too hot for various reasons. I did pull something off an old wish list that I'd forgotten about, a self-titled album by a band called Science For Girls...

The heatwave has blessedly relented, but that is no reason for the music to cool down. Here are more hot-weather tunes for your weekend. Jon Spencer (Yes, that Jon Spencer, of Jon Spencer Blues Explosion) goes retro on this smokin' rockabilly number. Every time Jenn and I visit Portland, it's usually for about 3 or 4 days. The last few trips, we started counting Toyota Priuses, since I'm obsessed with them (see the car silhouette above), and there's way more of them in the Portland area than in the exurbs of Vancouver where Jenn and I currently live. Our counts have always been exactly 50, the last one usually counted while we're over the Columbia River, not quite in Washington yet. This time, we've been in Portland not two full days, and we're already at 58. I love this town. [...]

Throw Me the Statue, Grand Archives, Bon Iver, Science for Girls, and The Gutter Twins have bombarded my feedreader this past week and as such I've made an effort to grit my teeth and succumb to the hype, lest I fall behind and be unable to converse with the Pitchfork reading illuminati and DC hipsters I might encounter in the coming weeks. If you care to play along on this dreary Saturday, here are the files you will need. Grand Archives - Torn Foam Blue Couch [...]

Science for Girls ... I played the album for my wine and cheese friends, but it had a little bit too much shall we say, " je ne sais pas," for them. Plus, most of these folks have an inability to create emotional attachment with anything, until it comes in conjunction with a commercial, or passed around via office talk and playlists. Although I was wrong, I thought the metropolitan & AM escapist vibe of so many of the tracks, would be enough to grab their attention, but I think they were scared off by the spacey totemic psychic [...]

Science for Girls will release its self-titled debut on March 11, 2008. From NYC producer and songwriter Darren Solomon, Science for Girls is melodic electronica kissed by classic pop, jazz, and Brazilian music. Minimal yet lush, chilled-out but never background music, the music appeals to fans of creative electronica like Imogen Heap, Air, and The Postal Service. Science for Girls - You'll Never Know mp3

Science for Girls was the Keyboard Magazine unsigned artist of the month for April, 2006. As of this writing, the project is still unsigned. One of the great mysteries of the universe. The chilled grooves feature a variety of guest vocalists. I particularly like the performance of "Pitchy McPlugin" on "You'll Never Know". Perhaps you recognize Pitchy's voice. It appears on many electronic music albums, but you rarely get to hear the range Pitchy is capable of like you do in this track. Bronwen Exter contributes some wonderfully loungy vocals [...]
