I know it's been a while since i last posted but it's been an eventful few weeks. I've had to deal with a lot of overtime at work which has it's good and bad points. Good points - lots of money at the end of the month. Bad points - over tiredness (i can't sleep) and an almost non existent social life between Monday and Friday. Over the past week or two i've also been busy sorting out my new house. Yes, i eventually got a flat. I'm eventually moving out into the big [...]
Broken bones or bar brawls got you down? The Future of Music Coalition is re-launching their health care survey of musicians as health care reform limps its way into Washington. First conducted in 2002, the survey found 44 percent of working musicians did not have health care (and something tells us that number has since risen). Musicians can take the survey here . Answers are confidential and should only take a few minutes to complete. The survey seeks to know whether artists have insurance, as well as whether they're aware of health [...]

The scope of the Bay Area's independent music scene came through loud and clear at Friday night's sold out Noise Pop show at Bottom of the Hill

Oh the places you will go this weekend in San Francisco...
Got Your Moments MP3 File
![[Just Burn It!] Moms are the Best! mix-tape](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/1715002_lg.jpg)
This Sunday is Mother's Day in many parts of the world. If you are in those parts , or you just love your mother, then this is the mix for you (and your mother!). Just download it, burn it, and give it to your mother. Don't listen to it or even read the track names. That way it will be more fun for everyone! Track-list after the jump. (no peeking!) Download the "Moms are the Best!" mix [...]

Continuing what's becoming one of our favorite traditions, The Uptown will host another amazing night of local music with First Friday tonight. Scissors for Lefty , French Cassettes and Alright Class will perform. Scissors for Lefty - "Lay Down Your Weapons" from Underhanded Romance Doors open early at 6pm so you can take advantage of the $2 Pabst. The show starts at 9pm and there's no cover!
South By Southwest (SXSW) wrapped up March 22 with it's final shows. Here's a recap of some note worthy performances.

I won't be going, but if I was, these would be my highlights. Now I know it will be impossible to see all of these bands/artists, I know how SXSW works. However, the SXSW website has a plethora of free songs for you to sample to assist you in your decision. If you are not going, go ahead and download them anyway; there's obviously a reason why these bands were picked to showcase their music this year. Abe Vigoda - Don't Lie [...]

if your lips touched my lips could I call you my baby or what? Scissors For Lefty - Ghetto Ways Ok, so you got me. The above album is not Scissors For Lefty's latest (That would be the Consumption Junction EP ) but since I like it better it's gonna get top billing. Deal with it. If the super-funk synths and semi-orgasmic "Ahhh ahh ahh"s don't get you pumped then you need to just listen to it again. And again. And maybe watch [...]

Last night at Bender's we managed to catch Scissors For Lefty playing to a packed room during the first Noise Pop show of the night. The band delivered an awesome set of their trademark partified, danceable pop, and the crowd was right there with them. By the end of the set the band (and the crowd) was dancing, sweaty, and happy. The show was pure, classic SFL: lead singer Bryan Garza delivered an epic performance, sometimes on guitar sometimes not, with in between trips to every [...]
The past two nights of Noise Pop have been great with excellent performances from Deerhunter ( photos/review ), Antony and the Johnsons , Stephen Malkmus , Mountain Goats , French Kicks and many more. Tonight brings even more amazing shows, with performances by Stranger Dance favorites like Josh Ritter , Thao Nguyen , A.A. Bondy and a host of great local bands including Thee Oh Sees , Scissors for Lefty and Man/Miracle (many of which were featured on our recent Best [...]

Want to find a reason to get out of the rain and into some amazing live events? I give you Noise Pop 09 ! The Noise Pop Festival , which runs this Tuesday, February 24th through Sunday, March 1st, 2009, is an ambitious iteration of San Francisco's favorite indie music, arts and film. For their 17th anniversary, Noise Pop 2009 will honor what's made it the best-loved celebration of indie music and culture since its humble birth in 1993. This years music will feature such indie superstars like Antony and the Johnsons , [...]
It's been hard for anyone who's been a long time fan of Murder by Death . When pianist Vincent Edwards left the band in 2004, it became apparent that he had a huge influence on the band's sound. So their last two albums, In Bocca Al Lupo and Red of Tooth And Claw , suffered from that true whiskey-dry creepiness that made Murder by Death enjoyable (for me at least). Well I guess God was listening, because not only is Murder by Death playing Red of Tooth And [...]

Here are some songs for our first ever installment of the Tuesday mp3 Smörgåsbord . There's a band named after a large mammal, a band of the everyday indie variety, a slowed down Genesis cover and an Otis Redding song made famous by that one band, you know, with the lead singer that used to be married to Kate Hudson. Get 'em before the fat congeals. Whale - Hobo Humpin' Slobo Babe (mp3) from We Care Scissors for Lefty - Got Your Moments (mp3) [...]
Good luck trying to find ticket for the Glasvegas / Carl Barat ( Libertines , Dirty Pretty Things ) show on Thursday. However, consider yourself lucky if you happened to snag a couple, I can only assume it will be a kick ass concert. I'll be attending the hometown hero Sean Hayes' show over at the Rickshaw Shop on Wednesday. If you haven't given him a listen yet, you need to. I cannot stress that enough. He's simply amazing. Oh and don't forget to get a bottle of wine signed by Maynard James [...]

Photo from the HAD Archive Last we heard from Scissors From Lefty , they had just released their EP Consumption Junction (which rocks, by the way), and were on the way to a bunch of promotional dates in November. Well, fast forward to early December, and the band is apparently ramping up to a full album release. On the band's myspace blog, they've thrown down a coming-soon gauntlet: "We've got about another 12 songs waiting on the back burner so strap yourselves [...]

Scissors for Lefty are back with a brand new EP and a release show this Saturday at the Rickshaw Stop . The EP features five new songs of lean, Brit-inclined uptempo pop from the quartet's recent sessions with Talking House Productions . Highlights include "Ornamental"-which longtime fans will certainly recognize-and "Steve's Song"-the first song written and sung by drummer Steve, as well as a cover of a song by The Bloody Heads . Scissors for Lefty - "Lay Down Your Weapons" (from Underhanded Romance [...]

Picture from the HAD Archive 330 Ritch is a familiar venue to anyone who has braved the hordes of 18 year olds to catch an up and coming band at Popscene . Well it now appears that the venue has begun hosting gigs full time, and rebranded itself as the "Official Venue Of Spin ". Hrm. Interesting. Well, regardless of venue renovations and branding, the more compelling part to us here is that the venue will be hosting [...]
Real estate in America isn't as valuable as it was a year ago, but I'll tell you what-the real estate in my music library is more valuable than ever. Gone are the days when I would import willy-nilly just to raise the song count on my iPod. ThePerryTrain doesn't press that "import to itunes" button with reckless abandon anymore. If music doesn't pass my strict "no filler" rule, it ain't gettin' into my pod. I only had to listen to the first two songs on Scissors For Lefty [...]
