After a week away, it was nice to be back in the studio. This week I played several folk-related tunes, a few garage-based ones, and a small handful of indie pop tracks. With the amount of indie-folk I've played of late, I'm thinking we're in store for another dreamy mix and maybe even a garage rock mix in the near future. Andi and I have been on a DIY kick of late and a recent project has been homemade laundry detergent. With the three ingredients displayed in the photo above, along [...]

Loyal Divide's Stolen Van (2000 Ford E350 Super Duty) Jeez. Another week, another case(s) of local band band thievery. It's unfortunate to report but the most recent theft cases involve psych-poppers Loyal Divide and indie rockers Scotland Yard Gospel Choir . According to the Bloodshot Records website, the members of Scotland Yard Gospel Choir were throwing a going away party for band member Elia, who is bolting for NYC, at The Whistler in Logan Square. While the [...]

Oh, what a weekend Chicago has in store for us all. Riot Fest , which technically kicked off yesterday, continues with big, big, big shows around town including DANZIG, Smoking Popes and Weezer. But if you're not into the insanity of our annual punk-a-thon, look no further than T-Bone at Quenchers, Great Society Mind Destroyers at the Viaduct and a few more fests we think you'd enjoy immensely. You don't want to find hell with me, mother. So let's get to it. [...]

Architecture Rain, rain, go away so that I might party outside without getting drenched today. OK yes, that was lame, but this weekend surely isn't. We've got dueling neighborhood fests yet again with Taste of Lincoln Avenue at the East end of Fullerton and the Milwaukee Avenue Arts Festival happening on the West. It feels like summer is only getting started, so let's get to it! FRIDAY [...]

chaperone Hot town, summer in the city. Summer is creeping upon us, Nick Minaj-style . But enough of the weather report, we have a lot of music to get to. We're talking about Urge Overkill at Bottom Lounge , Tommy Stinson at Double Door and Rambos at the Whistler . Let's get to it, gang. FRIDAY [...]

Chomp, too Columbia College Chicago's student-run record label AEMMP is releasing a new local music compilation called Chomp, too , today, Feb. 17. The collection contains 14 tracks by Chicago artists including the likes of A Lull , Chaperone , Scotland Yard Gospel Choir and Secret Colours . It can be purchased via the AEMMP's bandcamp page and Shop Columbia . Chomp, too is AEMMP's second compilation album. It follows AEMMP's 2009 release, the cleverly named, Chompilation [...]
I can say with absolute certainty that at least 50% of the Teenage Kicks staff is 100% positive that The Pogues "Fairytale of New York" is better than 99.9 % of all other Christmas songs, and 78% sure that it's almost impossible to ruin. It blends the sweet and sadness of Christmas, gives equal import to both the hope and desperation prevalent during the holidays. It also lends credence to the notion of Shane MacGowan as one of rock's greatest songwriters, as only he could conjure up this mixture of blood, beer, sweat and junk commingling with simple dreams of [...]

If you're gonna play one Christmas song this holiday time then there is only one , although it's available in a few flavours. The Scotland Yard Gospel Choir - Fairytale of New York Stars - Fairytale of New York Pilate - Fairytale of New York KT Tunstall - Fairytale of New York In-Flight Safety Ft. Jenn Grant - Fairytale of New York [...]

Download: "Stop!" Certainly joyful and colorful in the press photo, The Scotland Yard Gospel Choir's sound comes from a darker place. The band is built around the songwriting of former drug dealer Elia whose lyrics deal with issues of drug abuse, mental illness and sexual identity. It's no wonder, then, that Elia comes off as a bit as the bastard child of Morrissey and Javis Cocker (Pulp) - go ahead, picture THAT consummation in your dirty, dirty mind! While comparisons to [...]

Elia Einhorn, founder and chief songwriter for Scotland Yard Gospel Choir , got a chance to chat to one of her all-time heroes: Jon Langford... For those of you who are wondering who he is, well, he was the main man from influential punk band The Mekons . Who, if you've not heard of before, you should investigate their back catalogue NOW. Langford is currently on Bloodshot records, releasing many a fine roots record and he's Welsh (which is always a good thing). Here, Elia and Jon chat candidly about past, present and the shit of being dropped. [...]

Photo by Nathan Keay Chicago rockers Warm Ones sound a little hotter than their name on the first track from their latest release, Sprezzatura . Warm One started out a few years back as a recording project for then-members of The Saps and the Scotland Yard Gospel Choir . This lead to the creation of the album Sprezzatura , which was released earlier this year and features contributions from Chicago heavyweights Brighton MA and The 1900s . While the album is a [...]

Plenty more great shows like La Scala at the Empty Bottle , Light Pollution at the Hideout and much more! Let's get [...]

Three crossed legs, coffee sipping reasons to head on over to Puck's Cafe at the Museum Of Contemporary Art for tonight's Magical Musical Showcase... 1. Matthew Kerstein , Chicago's very own (via Boston), will be playing a solo acoustic set. Not familiar with the name? Well, he was once a member of our beloved Scotland Yard Gospel Choir and is currently fronting his new band, Brighton, MA . Not a bad pedigree so far. 2. [...]

Horrible photo, I know, but I wanted to show you what my neighbours house looks like. We have tour buses, cars, police cars, and pedestrians on our street just to see this Christmas display. They do it for charity, I think they are raising funds for Sick Kids Hospital. It is overpowering but not to bad, it's just that when you drive up to the house your blinded by the lights of the display and cars that are parked looking at the house. Anyway, I wanted to regift from last year one of my favorite Christmas songs and [...]
