You Should Know Born in Queensland, Australia and now operating out of Brooklyn, singer/songwriter Scott Matthew has a unique and slightly androgynous voice somewhat but not blatantly reminiscent of Antony Hegarty of Antony and the Johnsons. After contributing six songs to the sexually charged 2006 John Cameron Mitchell film Shortbus , Matthew found a larger audience. He's also recorded scores for Japanese anime television shows and songs for the film adaptation of Cowboy Bebop . Weird. Now armed with a full-length self-titled debut, Matthew's songs sort [...]

(more...)

Australian native and Brooklyn-based singer/songwriter Scott Matthew is a wonderful mix of Devendra Banhart and Antony Hegarty of Antony and the Johnsons. Now that combination may sound like music which may be alienating to many people, but it isn't at all. As I stated earlier it's a 'wonderful' combination of these two artists; the otherworldly quality which Antony lives and breathes and pours out through his voice and that inexplicable charisma that new folk icon Devendra Banhart wears like an unselfconscious child. In Matthew's music these are brought together in a form much more accessible to your average [...]

Check out a beautiful cover of The Smith's classic "The Boy With The Thorn In His Side" by Scott Matthews. The British folk-pop crooner recorded this version last summer around the time of the release of his debut album "Passing Stranger." The LP failed to hit the big time, but Matthew's incredibly moving and earnest sound is definitely worth your attention. Especially fans of Jose Gonzales and Nick Drake will be in for a treat. Also, download a guilt-free MP3 of Matthews' single "Elusive," which is equally memorable. (Thanks to Oliver for the heads up.) [...]

So, Springfield's pretty much flooded. It has rained non-stop since probably 8pm last night. The tiny creek next to my uncle's shop is now a raging river and driving around town, since Springfield's drainage system is terrible, is near impossible and a lot of intersections you just have to take backroads around. Let's just say me and the weather here in Springfield have been on bad terms for quite a while now. This year has been ridiculous. T-shirt weather, next day ice storm. T-shirt weather, next couple days flooding. I've never been ready for Spring and Summer to arrive in [...]
Numb Hand It still pinches, points and picks, but it won't play what I love. How I used to baby it, clean it, marvel at its tricks. Now it's just where part of me ends. I'm going to slice it off and wrap it in birthday paper; it's a pretty gift. I hope you can use it for something, a paperweight, indicate directions, pin it on your blouse, "I'm With Stupid." It can't feel what it's done to me. Dumb lump didn't drop a [...]

I'm guest hosting over at Fong Songs again today, throwing down a feature on Pop Punk covers of folk songs while Fong heads off to Las Vegas for some culture. (I'd say more, but you know what they say about what happens in Vegas.) If your ears can take the hard stuff, join me at Fong Songs for the sweet non-folk sounds of The Lemonheads, Sonic Youth, P.J. Harvey, Dinosaur Jr., and a bunch of other 80s alt-punk rockers. Before you go, here's some earcandy, a [...]

(as featured on This Week's Finds , Dec. 16-22) "Walk in the Woods" - Shipwreck As Stephen Sondheim cautioned us some time ago, going into the woods is never a straightforward enterprise. Something lurks, shadows predominate, and change--not initially for the better--is always afoot. And even though the cryptic lyrics here do not describe anything overtly terrible, "Walk in the Woods" drips omen and portent, from its itchy, hihat-driven beat to the singer's deadpan baritone to the wailing lead guitar that quite literally becomes a siren as the [...]
Over the course of the year, Fingertips has featured in-depth reviews of roughly 150 excellent free and legal MP3s. Pruning that list of already really good songs down to a top 10 proved to be a piece of cake pretty much impossible. And so what follows are two lists: one of my top 10 favorite free and legal MP3s of 2007, and another featuring my next 12 favorite free and legal MP3s of the year. Click on the song titles to download; click on the word "more" to read the original "This Week's Finds" review. More information about [...]

watched shortbus last night, john cameron mitchell 's funny and sad and ultimately redeeming love song to the emotionally and romantically retarded, and to the city (new york) that doesn't avert its eyes, that makes space - in the form of an underground salon for both the polysexual & the merely curious called shortbus - for any and all comers. much had been made of the film's graphic portrayal of love & sex, specifically the latter, which after viewing feels like little more than puritanical overreaction; it's a frank, adult and ultimately honest telling of a story, [...]

If you haven't noticed, the Canals have been on a bit of a break from posting. Two weeks to be exact. School seems to have gotten the best of us. But that doesn't mean we haven't been thinking about you guys. I saw The Darjeeling Limited last weekend, and I've been on a Kinks kick ever since. Here are two songs from the soundtrack and a few other of my favorite tracks of the past 14 days. The Kinks - Strangers Download audio file [...]

As Howard wrote earlier this week, it's all change on the work front and my days of commuting to Birmingham have come to an end. To mark the great occassion, I thought I'd post some Scott Matthews, Woverhampton's boy-wonder. So much for the Midlands being the home of ROCK. I'm surprised that Scott hasn't had more coverage - he makes the kind of breathy, dense boy songs that normally explode over the blogosphere with all manner of 'OMG it's the next Buckley/Smith/Drake' comparisons that I find so massively nauseating. (Tell me it's not just me). [...]

It's like Christmas in August. If you've attended conferences for work before, surely we've all collected the same array of doodads and logo-covered items over the years. But I've never experienced quite the excitement that I get tucked inside a nondescript canvas bag at the registration table for the Boulder music summit. Instead of letter openers and stress balls, I find enough sampler CDs and random little EPs to sate me for quite a while (even a Modest Mouse 7"! Yeehaw). Many of these artists are buzz bands that I keep hearing about, and going through [...]

I am expecting the blogoverse to veer out of control very soon over Scott Matthews If you're a fan of Damien Rice, Elliot Smith, Nick Drake, Alexi Murdoch and Jeff Buckley then chances are you will swoon for Scott Matthews' debut album, Passing Stranger . The Wolverhampton singer-songwriter's debut is a gorgeous collection of songs already getting rave reviews in the UK. Jeff Buckley comparisons aside, Matthews is one incredible singer and songwriter - his album will be released Stateside in the Fall. The depth and [...]
This is how you get the most bang for your recorded buck. SXStereogum alum What Made Milwaukee Famous put out Trying To Never Catch Up in '04, had a Barsuk re-release in '06, and now present us with this spooky/spoofy clip for the lowercased standout "idecide." Puppeteer and filmmaker Toben Seymoure is the man behind the specter-acle and has succeeded in making us long for a trip to Disney World for the first time since 10th grade (late bloomers here, plus that ride is the shit).
