Woke up in San Francisco. I opened the balcony curtains and there was the Golden Gate Bridge staring back at me. Not a bad way to start the day. Especially after sleeping so well after last nights show and formal dinner. I'm pretty okay with this whole cruise thing. Walked a few miles from the pier and into the city. Even made it to Lombard Street and snapped this pic which I uploaded earlier to Twitter. Speaking of, my plan was to heavily tweet my way through this excursion, but the [...]
Summertime is vacation time. Roadtrip time. So sweaty you stick to your chair my God why don't I live in a more temperate climate time. So where do you go at a time like this? "California! Californiaaaaaa! Here we COOOOOOOOMMMMME!" Excuse me. I believe I slipped into the theme song of the O.C. for a moment. I thought about making every track on this list "California" by Phantom Planet, but I'm fairly certain I am the only one who would think that is funny. So instead, here a legit list [...]

This is a little more of a personal post. A good friend named Moses just left the city to move onto a bigger and better place. Got me thinking about a few of my favorite tunes... MP3: Gene Kelly and Donald O'Connor-Moses (from Singin' in the Rain soundtrack) MP3: Toots and the Maytalls-Six and Seven Books of Moses MP3: Scott McKenzie-San Francisco (Make Sure To Wear Some Flowers in Your Hair) [...]

a few weeks back nate from booktapes , who's new to the bay area, asked if a.g. could recommend any songs of, about, or related to san francisco. a few titles were batted back and forth between us, which process inspired the idea for this post. though clearly more robust than what we first came up with, the suite of songs below is far from a comprehensive list. (tony bennett, whose " i left my heart in san francisco " probably rates as the most iconic s.f.-related song, you'll notice has been left off, along [...]

USA Today's music critics have tackled the music of 30 years ago to decide which 20 albums "defined" the era . They've also drafted a list of the singles of the year and explored some of the era's musical "oddities" , such as Bill Cosby's spoken word novelty hit "Little Ole Man (Uptight-Everything's Alright)", in which he uses "hip lingo", and Peggy Lee's "tepid" album of "mellow, thinly arranged standards", Somethin' Groovy! . Bill Cosby - Little Ole Man (Uptight-Everything's Alright) (with parenthetical "Uptight-Everything's Alright" melody courtesy of Stevie Wonder's [...]

Music nerds and magazines everywhere are celebrating the fortieth anniversary of the release of Sergeant Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band this month, so I thought it'd be cool to see what was going on in the singles charts forty years ago. 1967 was a big year in music, not only did The Beatles' most critically acclaimed album come out that year in June, but The Velvet Underground's debut album was released in March, Jimi Hendrix lit his first guitar on fire (and burned his hands, he perfected this stunt in later shows), The Stooges played their first ever [...]
As the name suggests, these are all songs from the movie, Forrest Gump. It's not that I have any particular love for the movie, I think it's alright, yet the music on it is what makes it special. I actually listened to the soundtrack frequently before I ever saw the movie, my parents clearly seeing its quality, making this album one of my earliest exposures to music of the past. And so when it came to finding my favourite 60s songs, I found quite a few to be off this album, so much so that I thought it deserved an [...]
