scott walker - the old man's back again (mp3) i caught the last three quarters of an hour of rather good bbc rockumentary on scott walker last night which prompted me to post this little quickie. i think like most people, i'm pretty well aquainted (thanks mum) with the walker brothers (they weren't actually brothers though, nor in fact were any of them even called walker - lying bastards) but i knew absolutely nothing of scott's (real name noel scott engel) solo stuff until i bought air's excellent late night tales compilation [...]
A cause de trucs comme White Light/White Heat, A Banda Tropicalista, An Electric Storm, Astral Weeks, Caetano Veloso, The Kinks Are the Village Green Preservation Society, Machine Gun, (...)

I went to see the new Scott Walker documentary the other day. Really enjoyed it, thanks. The Drift was one of my favourite albums of last year, even if at no point did I get even close to writing about it. I still wouldn't know where to begin. Sensibly, Thirtieth Century Man begins at the beginning, charting the descent of Scott Walker from the Walker Brothers era through the eponymous four, (ignoring the fallow decade to follow), reawakening with the where-the-devil-did-that-come- from Nite Flights , before wandering awed through the black three. A career [...]

I'm going to dedicate this post to the radio station I just recently discovered here in Columbus. With the spotty reception of the one other oldies station in the city, 107.9, and SuperCar Jr.'s finicky radio, I was overjoyed when I stumbled across AM920, WMNI (a true oldies station focusing on crooners and 60's folk). I'd never really listened to the AM band before I'd discovered 920, I thought that the only thing on AM was talk radio and sports. It was cold when I first tuned into WMNI and the windows were up. I turned [...]
New podcast video tomorrow. Is really funny for me. New Sunday Mix Tape now. Is mind-blowing and loud for you. RULES for uninitiated noobs : With 100MB of webspace, I give birth to a weekly Mix Tape to be deposited on your iPods or Zunes or Kingklangs or whatever the industry is currently pushing on you. Sometimes there will be themes that link all the songs together, other times I'll just throw songs at a wall (not literally) and see what sticks. This week I scoured my collection in an attempt to please every [...]

I was lucky enough last weekend to find a very cheap copy of the 5 disc Scott Walker box set ' Scott Walker in Five Easy Pieces ', and so much of my week since has been filled with the wonderfully dulcet tones of this genius of geniuseseses! Each disc is a themed compilation of songs from throughout his career, from all the way back to the earliest Walker Brothers recordings through to the fantastically avant-garde Tilt record. It's obviously mega-recommended, as is anything he's been involved with over the years, and in particular last year's incredible [...]

As promised , we're closing the Month of Male with a top 15 of the bestest Brel-covers by men. Yes, I know I said Top 25 before, but how many Ne Me Quitte Pas-versions can you take? I left out the four covers already posted (Pierre Lapointe's version should be in this list, though). And I've added a few miscalleneous versions. Thanks to Gerwin, SOM, John, Billy and everyone else who has send me emails and tips about coverversions. Hors Categorie Dusty Springfield - If You Go Away [...]

------------------------------ -- 10. Jarvis Cocker - Jarvis The definition of the word "witty" is generally defined as one who combines clever conception and facetious expression, though if you would like an enjoyable example, I would suggest listening to most songs by Pulp. Indeed, "witty" is one of the many complementary adjectives that could be used to describe Jarvis Cocker and Pulp. Ever since Cocker formed the band at the tender age of 15, the public has had eyes and ears focused on Cocker, their oddly enjoyable frontman. After some amateur [...]
#20-16 #15-11 #10-6 #5 Califone-Roots & Crowns(Thrill Jockey) Who would have thought that the album with the Psychic TV cover would be Califone's most popular release yet? The band hasn't really changed too much in their seven year history, but that is starting to look like a good thing. Roots and Crowns is another album full of the avant/blues/punk/folk/rock fusion fans have come to expect but the group still injects [...]

Man... this took forever. So much jockeying and moving of albums up and down from my original placements. Many albums got overlooked in my trial run, and I had to get them inserted and then more jockeying of positions. Then there's the fact that many aren't in Rhapsody yet, and those had to be inserted as well (more jockeying, etc.) In the end, though, my top three never moved. TV On The Radio , The Hold Steady and Scott Walker kept their stranglehold, while most other albums jumped up or down [...]

You're favorite pretentious music force Pitchfork just released their annual singles year-end list , this year expanding the usual top 50 all the way to 100. #1 on the list is the particularly un-pretentious single "My Love" from Justin Timberlake , which for some reason has some blogga's panties in a bunch. Not sure why... Timbaland's synths n' beats combined with JT's killer falsetto is a homerun, and JT's SNL appearance this weekend further cemented him as the new "King of Pop." Playlist: Pitchfork Top 100 Singles of [...]
Scott Walker jatkaa etenemistään yhä oudommille ja pimeämmille poluille. Tästä on todisteena hänen Plague Songs -teemalevylle säveltämänsä kappale, jonka Insound tarjoaa ladattavaksi. Kyseinen kappale on hyvin hämmentävä. Scott Walker: Darkness (mp3) Tagit: Scott Walker , mp3

Last year was a good one for Animal Collective . Their seventh album, Feels , was in the 'top ten list' at the end of the year in virtually every indie music publication, and rightfully so. The indie critic's favorite band of 2005 has been touring momentously since the release a year ago, playing dozens of new songs (most of which fans are raving about). Finally, they are releasing a new EP, though it is only three songs and it will be available only in Australia as a tour EP entitled People . [...]

Just some songs I've been into lately. A lazy post, maybe, but you might find something you like. 1. Scott Walker - Jackie ( Download ) from the album Scott 2 Prior to this year my only experience with Scott Walker was '30th Century Man', arguably his most famous radio single. I'm glad to report I'm all caught up on Scott's discography, and so far 'Jackie' ( Scott 2 's epic opener) is the most delightful find. I highly recommend giving that record [...]

Reclusive crooner Scott Walker's contribution to the forthcoming 4AD compilation Plague Songs is "Darkness," an ode to that particular plague. "Dark" doesn't even begin to describe just how unsettling it is. The song starts off innocently enough, with a tambourine accompanying Walker's otherwordly tenor--but then, a fright-night chorus swoops in, and you're jumping out of your seat. Public service announcement: When you decide to hit "play," please remember to have at least one light on. Scott Walker - Darkness [MP3] Eno, Scott Walker, Stephin Merritt Rock The 10 Plagues [...]
